I'm wanting to put them into the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. How many for each bucket do you think is best. I'm thinking 6 or seven would be the max even if I put them in a circle near the edge. Also the site says 3 birds per nipple, have you found that to be right?

I have one 5-gallon bucket with 4 nipples for 15 2-mo chickens and 8 ducks inside and another outside.

I have one 5-gallon bucket with 4 nipples for 25 2 1/2-week old chicks.

They take turns, based on pecking order. It is usually not in use. Any bird with enough patience can get a drink. The impatient push out the patient.

Wouldn't hurt anything to put 8 or 10. They're cheap and my motto is "If a little is good, a lot is better".

Thank you oh holy one... I will try to pay attention in the future-- you don't want to get me laughing, I may never stop (especially when I am tired, like now). I've been known to go a full 20 minutes without stopping. Yeah, it was bad

Animallover: have you found a new pair yet? I have a pair of OEGB that are 9 weeks old if you were interested. The roo is looking like a silver duckwing, I am not sure which color the pullet is. let me know if you are

I don;t suppose anyone would like to make an offer on a golden seabright roo? also 9 weeks. Friendly and will eat out of your hand, just not my favorite of the two.

I was out building raised gardens this afternoon and they were all playing in the temp run. It was a nice day

Update: Buckets with plastic handles don't appear to hold up well when hanging from a rope.
Note the crack forming on the handle.

This could give a chicken a terrible headache.

I will be changing over to the few buckets that I have with wire handles.

If we don't end up with a rooster, which right now I'm about 90% sure Caroline may end up being Carl, I may just take you up on that. Doesn't look like you are too far of a drive from me. Is he friendly?

Thanks for the coop compliments! We spent a lot of time and energy deciding exactly what we wanted. We talked about collecting the rain water, but we'd only be able to gutter the low part and it didn't really seem worth it for the 8 feet we'd get. Who knows, we may add that in time. I had some old cedar planks from a fence that we were going to use for siding, but I think we're actually going to use them in our house now, so I need another plan for siding. I really want to do wood siding so I'm on the hunt for some reasonably priced options. Trying to keep the coop from costing 30x what the chickens did...

My coop is the same size as yours, and you would be amazed at how much rainwater you can collect off it in a short time. The gutter on the low part of the roof feeds into a 5 gal bucket that has a line to my chicken nipple setup. I had to put an overflow hose on the bucket to get rid of the excess water since it fills so quickly. Thinking about figuring out a way to have a second bucket in the system for when it get's drier this summer.

OK here is my updates with my newest poults, they are almost a week old now, 4 Royal Palm. Faded black bands showing on only 2 of them on the wings.



My first guinea keet to hatch:


They have a silver tint, with darker silver stripes. Parents are a white cock, and either a pearl or white hen. Very pretty light silvery color.. my silly phone camera is showing it to be more lite tan. 2 of 3 are out.I took out the first little guy when I added water, he was jumping out of the "breed box", and vaulting over the goose eggs

So he was moved in with my late hatch chick from last week, just a day older. I was worried he would injure his legs with all the jumping!

Beautiful babies. I'm excited to see your Royal Palms. I'm picking up 3 tomorrow that are about 2 weeks old! Can't wait.
