Well I feel like sleeping with my chickens! I went out to check the younger ones that are out in a pen now. All the neighborhood dogs are barking their %{+€\ off!!! Well the coyotes are running tonight!! Yipping and squealing full blast!!! I'm sleeping with the windows open, flashlights are ready and guns are loaded!!!

Hehehe, I know what you mean! I wanted to say thank you to everyone's prayers and well wishes. This has been pretty awful. We are in a small valley, have a creek, a lake and woods around our house. The back is partially wooded, and a large amount of our land is still not cleared. So there's all sorts of nice hiding spots for predators to grab free range birds. My grow out pen had a weak point, and the raccoons found it. I have never seen a fox be as bold as the one that got my lavender Orp, so now no one gets to go out until I feel its safe again

To those who butcher. How do u kill your meat birds? My husband chops their heads off i don't know if i can kill something. Ive been struggling with this for a while. Any suggestions? I have a lot of butchering to do today and DH wont get out of bed and start killing lol

I use a cone. Its a lot less trauma for the bird and for me too. I have used the other methods and I prefer cones, Its just more humane and less frightening for the birds. Still hoping to plan a get together so we can share how we process our birds. Running into a brick wall finding a location that will allow it.

We're north of you by about 2 hours up 421. I could drive up to a half hour to meet you with him if you want to drive the rest of the way. He's too pretty to process, so I'd like to find him a home.

Greetings all....

You know we joke about not being on and have a hundred posts to catch up on... Well due to my laziness (should have at least kept up with the thread even if I did not post) I have 633 posts to read through... Oh joy

DH and I have our Indiana only produce stand finally up and running and due to a financial pinch while building this we have been working excessive hours to make ends meet. I have fingers crossed things are going to do well in our new permanent location and by the end of the summer our financial records will be in the black. Although I have an emergency vodka fund tucked away in my sock drawer just in case it doesn't, I can drink myself to a point I believe it is (insert drunk smiley).

Missed being on here and I really look forward to being a contributing member of the thread again. Yay for internet at our new stand.

I normally do too if I know I am going to be busy during the work week. After getting a new phone I had not set everything up yet including my BYC stuff means no checking the site during lunch. Coming home has been cooking dinner, washing housework and finishing that off with all the animals. All in time for me falling to sleep most nights on the couch. Not much time for a tea and read up.

The stand is located on the East side of Indy (Just north of 10th st on Post Rd). I will most certainly post pictures at some point... Maybe

On that note, anyone local to the stand who wants to take some soft vegetables (not moldy, just stuff people will not buy, bruises etc) for their chickens you are welcome to it. Mine have been eating cabbage, squash and strawberries this entire week. Hate to throw the stuff out. We normally send our unsold after the weekend food to the local food pantry, but setting up for the first few weeks is a daily thing for now until we are established.
Have lots of tomatoes that have some flat wrinkle spots on them, would be good for salsa and canning. Just do not have the time to do so right now.

day two of leftovers for the chickens, they were very excited by the leftover spaghetti bake. gotta get them used to the idea that there is life outside of crumbles. Somebody was crowing in the garage this morning, he's getting better but it is still so quiet that its hard to tell through the door. No, I am not complaining

Mine LOVE spaghetti! I think it's their favorite snack wanting to make a chicken tractor.. probably a-framed for wind durability here in the openess of South Columbus. But has to be big enough for a dozen or so B.O. for meat. Thinking maybe EMT conduit so it lasts, and not as heavy as wood. Might have to go price checking how large should Imake it then?
