I am just starting, and Bradselig on here has raised them too. They are the size of a bumblebee at hatch, just precious!

As far as building your coop on a concrete slab, the main consideration is drainage-- does a heavy rain flood the area, etc.

Welcome to the Indiana Thread stevekwan! Not sure about store locations-- you could Google. Check out craigslist for sale farm and garden, BYC classifieds, and perhaps there's a BYC Sussex Thread. Maybe some Indiana members from your area can help. I'm on my iPad, so I doubt the members list link shows up under my post, but you can use the link from jchny2000's recent post to see the Indiana members who live near you or those who have Sussex chickens.

CRSelvey, I have a galvanized hanging water thingy in our coop and I don't have problems with leaks/wet coop. It's fairly heavy with water in it, so it doesn't swing or spill. (I always have a bowl of water available outside of the coop when they're out for the day.

Animallover-- Great job! Congrats on your accomplishments. Can't wait to see more chick pix.

Do you have a small, bright flashlight? If so you can candle, go into a room that gets really dark. you will see its tiny head moving if its pipped internally. If you don't see or hear movement, gently tap a few times, and they will talk to you

(yep, this crazy bird lady talks to eggs

) What do I say? "hi chippy!!! are you coming out today?"
Its usually internally pipped the first day, external pip the 2nd. will zip within the 24 hours after external pip. If you dont have a good flashlight let me know, OK?

stevekwan, Sussex are somewhat hard to find. I have a coronation, she was one of 12 out of my very first shipped eggs. (Never buying from THAT guy again)
They are very sweet, calm birds, and I really want more. PM me and I can send you links of breeders I have found so far. Light and dark are more common, the speckled are beautiful also.

nice variety and i hope your hatch goes great. Right now i am on the fence. I think i might just stick with chickens and focus on them for a while and then eventually somewhere down the road get some quail. Bur who knows i might wake up tomorrow and buy some lol.

So I am looking for someone to buy and install a fence for my yard for free..... Any takers?

My neighbours dog got out yesterday. Came into my yard... barked at me non stop like I was the one in the wrong. All of the chickens went crazy.. Could not believe the uproar they were making over the dog. That in turn started the turkey off.
After walking the other side of my house to knock the neighbours door to let them know their dog was out... low and behold dog was around the front,... barking at me nice aggressive stand. I am now mad... Go inside and grab a cup of dog food (and a nice heavy soup cup, just in case) by the time I came back out the neighbor had noticed his dog was out and put him up.
Neighbour apologized and the dog did get out of a 6ft chain link fence, so it was not on purpose.. but still scary thought.
Topping that off with the idiots on the other side who let their unfenced unchained dog out for the day.... I am a bag of nerves. If that little rat bag dog comes in my yard again I am catching it and calling the pound.

Think I might just electrify the perimeter of my yard.. See if another dog comes in.
