So sorry about the owl attack! I done have any advice to offer though.
Hopefully the others are just late! I had that with my rhodebar chick. The mirror and stuffed animal did a little in comforting him, but the new chicks worked a lot better. I was using a couple quail chicks but was afraid he would step on them or something so I got a few more silkie chicks for him. Hope you can find some if the others don't hatch.

Thanks!Well now I am up to 4 chicks,2 blue and 2 black ameraucanas.So 17 eggs left.Last time i looked 3 had cracks in them, others might of too but the chicks kept pushing the eggs around.I am hoping a splash will hatch.I will post pics sometime this week!

Hi Everyone!
This is my first post here, so I hope I'm doing it in the right place?

I'm from NW Indiana, and looking to get a coop with 4-6 chickens in my back yard. I've literally just begun my research, so it will be awhile before it happens. I just wanted to connect with other chicken owners to touch base with.

After some googling, I can tell that I need chickens that will hold up to this crazy weather we have around here. Any recommendations? Also, can anyone local to me tell me WHERE I can buy them? I didn't really want to order them through the mail (when we get to that point).

One last question for the night....I'm not sure if I would be able to start with baby chicks. I would like to, but I'm a nurse, and I work 2, 12 hour shifts a week. From what I'm reading, you can't leave the babies unattended for that long. What would be a good age for me to get them at? I have 3 young kids (9, 7, and 5) so I want to get them young enough that they would be friendly with the kids.

I thought that spinsters were older women ("old ladies") who never married or had children. Of course men are referred to as "eligible bachelors."

I like easter eggers usually labeled as americanas(actually spelled ameraucanas, but a llot of people spell it wrong) event thought they aren't.They are cold hardy birds and lay pretty eggs (blue,green,pink, or i have seen a few lay brown, which brown isnt really colorful but the other possibiltiies are).I think they have awesomne personalties, are docile, and are sweet.They are also like a box of chocolates........you never know what you are going to get!You dont know what color egg they will lay until they lay it and you could have two chicks that are identical look completly different as adults.hereare some pics

I would recommend ameraucanas, but EEs are alot easier to find and are cheaper than ameraucanas.Ameraucanas lay blue eggs and are cold hardy.They can also be shown unlike EEs.

Welcome to the Indiana Thread Morganalefey! You're at the right place and we have a very active thread with helpful members. Some who live near you might have chicks or pullets for sale, and I know that many members can advise you about age, weather, and much more. I'm sure when people see tonight's post, they'll respond on the thread, but you never know who might be on the thread and at what time. Click on the link at the bottom of my post where it says INDIANA BYCers Member List. You can look through the counties and cities to find people near you. Click on the person's screen name and click on the link that pops up. You'll end up on that person's Profile. When I am on my ipod it does the same thing(just like being on a smart phone).
