INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Unless the heat is excessive, in Bartholomew County the poultry is usually judged on Monday or Tuesday and released on Friday. Last year many fairs released livestock right after judging because of the heat. The other livestock is there until Friday also; not sure when they are judged. I try to go over about Wednesday, early enough to beat the evening crowds but hopefully get to see other exhibits as well.

Our Decatur County fair is usually the 3rd week in July--haven't checked the calendar for this year. Will have to see which week Storie's Restaurant and the Westport Dairy Queen plan to be closed.

Okay, on my soapbox!

4-H is supposed to be about learning, responsibility, etc. But too many young folks are buying a nice bird right before the fair and selling it afterward. One 4-H er in Decatur County even asked to borrow a chicken to show! (Naturally I said sure, you can take one of my exhibition birds, leave it penned there for a week with kids poking at it, take your ribbon, and then give it back to me with whatever it picked up during that week.) At least with their cattle, hogs, etc. they have to have worked with them to be able to show them in the ring.

i killed and cleaned my BO rooster. got tired of him chasing my kids and sneak attacking me. my hens arent laying right now, so i cant incubate anyway. i have a 2 month old BO roo that i will put with them once he starts crowing. he was so pretty, but so dang mean. hope the girls will be fine without him. they've been together since hatch.

Sorry you had to, but I bet its a relief not having to worry about his attacks anymore. My Red is pushing me to that point too, He is even attacking visitors now, my brother stopped in, and as soon as he got out of his car, wham! My Gander won't let Red come out of the coop after this weekend, he chases him back in! He dared to go after one of the goslings and Gee really has it in for him now.
Your girls may miss him a little but it passes fast.

Crafty- I'm about to do in both of my big Roos. The black Cochin- Malocombe and Clive the BO!! My girls looks so bad and beat up!! And I've got the young BOs growing too. DH asked me why I was keeping them!! I do love to hear Clive crow but the next one will too!! Actually I'd like an EE roo, a little smaller for the girls.

Still having no luck rehoming the roosters. Kinda pushing off getting my EE Roo (should be from Dungheap) until they are gone.

How pratical are bantams for butchering? Although I can not even imagine doing that to the fluffy silkie. It is quickly becoming my only option.

Still shopping around for a bantam Cochin. Will post newer pictures of my little ones maybe tomorrow, hopefully get a good determination on sex, might not have to shop around all together. Still humming and arhing over the lavenders. Might be one of each on those. That would be nice.

My goodness, such gruesome posts this evening. The rain must be dampening spirits. Here's a little comic relief. : - )

This is exactly what happened to each of my cats:

I counted 9 eggs. That's $122.22 per egg. Way more than what you would pay at a world-class restaurant.

Having gotten no eggs yet, mine cost infinity. Right now, I'm making even Obama look like a cheapskate.

John
But our breakfast was world class. Those eggs were so freakin' good, I decided on my "The Dailey Chick" email newsletter that I've signed up my family for that the monthly rate is now $250 instead of $50. So far, I've not seen a check in the mail. Stingey family.

Some of ours have come wrapped in tinfoil, I guess the early morning radio with George Noory I leave on in the coop is getting thru to the chickens.

Close on the egg count. That was the first 8, we had 2 more that morning and used 1 the previous morning with 8 store bought in a breakfast casserole. That exhausted our supply, at least until yesterday when our daily production doubled (2). We've now recieved a bakers dozen.

How old are/were these roosters? Ours are showing signs of aggression now that they're 17-18 weeks. Crowing isn't non-stop, but more frequent. They sometimes attack the hens, I don't see the reason. They've tried asserting themselves on me, but that quickly stops. I'm the head (----) around here, and so are all the people who live here. I've heard for the best meat to process them up to 26 weeks, do y'all agree? After that it gets tough?

I don't mind the crowing so much, I find it way less stressful than a barking dog. The constant dog barking irritates me so much because it shows poor human ownership whereas the bird brains crow instinctually.
