INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

This kind of confused me lol. I dont understand genteics at all and I suck at science, it was my worst subject next to math. I know the outcomes for breeding blue black and splash. But I guess I should of been more clear on what I was asking with the leghorns, but thank you for explaining the rose comb thing because I had no idea. If you breed brown to brown do you get 100% brown or will you get 50% white or something like that? Thank you
That one I'm not absolutely sure on, but I believe that you will get all brown.

Anyone from the northern part of IN going to the chicken fest willing to pick up a couple chicks for me? I could pick them up from you Sunday evening or Monday anytime. Please let me know!

Ok, I guess I will see in a few months. And how do I know if my hen are homozygus or heterozygus (i am sure I spelled those wrong I just guessed) for rose comb.
The fastest way is to breed your hen with a single comb rooster. If all the offspring are Rose Comb, then she is homozygous. If you get any single combs, then she is heterozygous.

But that would give you a bunch of little ones that you may not want or have a use for. If you just want more RC Brown Leghorns, I'd just go for breeding them together and just watch for any single combs popping up. If they are decent stock, I'd bet you won't see any.

Yup I've read silkies can't fly but that never stopped my hens!

Well, I'm glad to read my little lady isn't the only one boldly defying the written limitations of her breed. Then again, from what I've read, Sebrights are infrequent brooders, but no one told my girls.

Cool!  Multiple genetics questions in one day!  Sorry, the geek in me is coming out. :D  I majored in Biology in college, and genetics was one of the areas that fascinated me.  I just wish I'd of gotten into chicken genetics then.

:highfive: I am in college majoring in biology and just getting into chicken genetics, myself! Awesome to see a fellow geek! :yesss:

You are most likely not going to get any white offspring as far as I know. Leghorns are dominant white, so unless someone introduced recessive white into the breed and your birds are split to it, I don't know how white would show up at all.

In regards to whether your birds are split for single comb, birds that are not pure for rose comb usually don't have very good rose combs. However, that's not a 100% indicator, because I've heard of single combs popping up in show quality Wyandottes. So, yeah, basically you'll have to breed them to find out for sure. :)

Thank you. There were 4 I picked from I picked the 2 with the best comb and body structure.

Ok, thanks. First I have to get a rooster and I want a few more hens.

Ohh and M2H, I have started to limit myself to breeds I want. I have legbar, Rhodebars, tolbunt polish, Birchen Marans, dark cornish, and silkies/showgirls to breed and then my egg production flock of naked necks, speckled Sussex, brown leghorns, and white rocks. I don't know what you are talking about me having one of every breed. I have several of many breeds!

. Ohh cant forget the little OEGB hen! She's living with the silkies now because the roos about squash her trying to mount her! And the ameraucanas, Araucana, and EE. Lol. But these guys might be leaving tomorrow.

bradselig~ Haha Only you would have a "Vaulted Skull" silkie! It sounded creepy, so I Googled it and it just has a puffier coiffure. What an unflattering term someone chose for a cute silkie. She probably wanted to be distinctive from the rest of your collection. : - ) Btw, nice photos of your interesting birds. It looks like your Tolbunts need to give some of their extra feathers to your Naked Necks.
racinchickins~ Looking forward to seeing your exhibit of interesting chickens~ And relieved you don't have an O Shamo! Sounds like vickichicki wants one~ she's making a note for future reference.

Darth~ How's your big white hen doing?

pipd~ I love those old Marx Brothers movies. Great name for your silkie! My Jubilee is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, either.

strssdmom~ Pretty chickens and very handsome son!

irtehun ~ How exciting! The blue lacing is so pretty.

Cluck Acres~ Great to hear from you. It sounds like you are doing well and keeping busy as usual.
kabhyper~ Yummy names for Godiva and Peaches. So . . . Oliver went to Boot Camp where Cluck Acres taught him not to peck? That Cluck sure is accommodating!
kabhyper posted: Also side note I realized tonight that the indiana thread is so great on here. I have been looking at breed threads and some of the people are not nice! Yay for us hoosiers!!

I credit jchny/Janet for setting the tone for this thread! As a result, we have a supportive, interesting, and fun Indiana Thread.

I am well over a hundred posts behind, just wanted to say hi super fast...

In the midst of my hog/turkey/chicken/lawnmower swapping today... Sugar has blessed me with a tiny doeling!
Please forgive my crappy quality pics, I used my cell phone!!!
First steps!

I heard sugar making panic bleating noises and RAN!
What a shock, I suspected she was pregnant but WOW!
She was up and walking minutes after birth.
Scared me to death, she was stuck, had to push her back to get her shoulders thru!
1 hoof and her nose through, and poor baby was gasping, cleared her nose and mouth right away.

I set up a heat lamp (secured!) and made a draft free nest with hay bales. Momma and baby are doing well tonight!
My first (goat) kid ever, Sugars first also. So very proud, she is a natural momma.
