INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

My neighbor raises and flies the tumbler pigeons. They are super cool to see fly, spiraling and plummeting towards the ground as a big group.
They dont fly, or at least the ones I have seen. Maybe their are different types of tumbler pigeons. An older guy that owns a farm out in Berne. Was nice enough to show around him farm. he has camels, emus, rheas, mules, donkeys, chickens, exotic goats, pheasants, and tumbler pigeons. He gave ma a whole lesson on camels and tumbler pigeons. He told me that they are unable to fly and he got one, tossed it towards the ground and it just went tumbling away on the ground. i askd him why they tumbled and he said that it is bred into them.Very interesting birds.

I bought a buff laced bearded polish pullet from Joel Henning, He was very nice. Told me a few things about the breed I didnt know. I only paid $25 and she is really pretty and friendly. I walked through the sales coops every 20 mins except for when I left for lunch.

Joel is one of the best when it comes to polish. He doesn't just sell a bird--he educates as well. I owe most of what I know about them (which isn't nearly enough) to Joel and to Kathy Troxell.

He was really nice.I would of talked to him longer, but I could tell he was very busy. If I buy any more polish I will buy from him.

My crele hen died today. i am not sure what was wrong. i found her half dead. They are an older pair, but she didnt die of old age. i couldnt get her to eat or drink or even open her eyes. the roosters eyes were foamy. Not sure what is wrong with him. They were only exposed to each other and were in quarientene so my other chickens are okay.

On a brighter not here are some pics of the lastest editions (and like always my pictures suck)

Mille Fleur belgian d'uccle pullet

White rock cockerel

pair of mottled bantam cochins

Bearded Buff laced polish pullet

Bantam salmon favorolle pullet

Black/blue ameraucana bantams

I dont have a picture of the salmon favorelle cockerel, barred rock cockerel, or the creleOEGB rooster.

Quote: If you don't want 3 month old chickens in the house/garage I would wait. I have stopped hatching anything til late winter.
(aside from quail lol)
Its harder to get them to the point of being outdoors (fully feathered) and worry some when you do put them out.
But if its for the kids, I would be having a hard time deciding too.

Ugh its snowing! And some of my meaties won't stay in their yard, they keep flying over the fence, then they get cold and want back in. I should have put up a 4' fence. smh...

nooo make it goooo away!!!!

I'm excited. Went on a road trip last night to pick up a Sportsman cabinet incubator I found on CraigsList.

Now for the hard part. I need to keep telling myself:

I will NOT set any eggs until spring. I will NOT set any eggs until spring. I will NOT set any eggs until spring. Oooh look, eggs on ebay.

My gramma always had them, and they were goose down pillows. I loved going to visit!
Every time My Mama goose sits in my lap I think of Gramma, love the warm smell of her feathers.
She still snuggles up to my neck, and loves to just sit and sleep on my lap

Gramma would collect their feathers, clean them and save back til she made a new pillow.
What I wouldn't give to have one of Gramma's pillows today

A very vivid description of my feelings of the feather mattress. I would not have made it on the frontier. Things like flour sack clothing, corn cob mattress, even feather mattress are just not for me. But a feather pillow with enough pillowcases on it is not too bad.

CCC..Chickens. I have found out that my youngest is not tolerating the puppies well. He is getting a goopy eye reaction. I wanted to let you know I have them listed on Craigslist for $25 each. The $25 is to cover the cost of their puppy collars and leashes as well as the flea medicine, not to make a profit. To be honest at this point I would drop the fee for the right family. However CL does not allow free pet listings. So I had to come up with something that sounded reasonable and yet nowhere near $150-250 that is clearly trying to make a profit.
Sally, WTG! Charging a rehoming fee makes the puppy more than a spur of the moment thing. It causes people to stop and think.

Quote: X2, they are very interesting and sweet, want to learn more about them.
I just love the pullets, they are adorable!
I have a SL trio and GL pair, I like he bearded and muffed look in my silvers! The roo is very sweet too.
My GL roo has waddles, seems too big and is very "spookish", the hen is attractive.
I may put the GL hen with the SL roo and sell/give the GL roo away.

Well I'm a big softy, and it's going to be really cold here tonight, so I brought momma and her three inside and put them in the brooder. She isn't sure about the other chicks yet, but I put a towel over the brooder to darken it up a bit and put the other chicks under her. She is covering herself with bedding, but she isn't being mean to the other chicks. I don't hear chirping or growling so I think everyone must be comfortable. So we will see. Here are the inside littles while I cleaned out the brooder before I brought momma in.

Aww they are adorable

Quote: I am seeing very few hawks here now too.

Temps in the 30's and the chicks are fine. THey are out in the coop unseperated from the flock of 33 adults being raised by two Jersey Giants. All goes well and HappyHappyHappy, Here is a videoI took this morning of them.. I caught them getting piggyback rides on the mommas..

Moving chicks around in the brooders again. Trying to give them more space until they can take the cooler night temps out in the growout coop. Setting up more brooders can be time consuming but it gives me a chance to make sure all of the runts are doing ok. And there always seems to be a runt or two.
I hear ya, My last few chicks I am being very careful when they move to the next brooder.
I have 8 misc breeds under 4 weeks, and a few more OEGB due to hatch

Quote: Rant all you need to. It really stinks!
My youngest DD was not at fault in her accident, and we finally got the report from the ins co.
She just got a newer pontiac V6. We are still pretty far out of pocket on the whole mess.
The kid that caused the accident is still driving his truck.
Its very upsetting.

New member from Terre haute, IN here had my chickens for around a year and a half. In need of a good broody hen if anyone in the area has one they don't want. I'm wanting to hatch some chicks this coming spring. I had a RIR hatch some last year and she was a food mommy hen but a raccoon took out over have my flock.

Welcome, glad you have joined us! I am so sorry to hear about your loss.
Raccoon are an easy problem to deal with compared to others. The link below:
