Thanks guys for the info. I do still have some starter/ finisher and some layer feed that I will finish up with but will buy some of the all flock for my gang. I have tow Roos and 14 Hens. I'm new at this so still learning. and you all have been a big help. I don't post much but read a lot and love hearing all about everyone's family.

JAG~ Please feel free to post as much as you want! (I do-- haha) We have lots of newbies, experienced poultry people, and everything in between.

If BYC updated to RWD (Responsive Web Design), then the BYC site would function as well as it does on a computer when it's pulled up on a mobile device like an iPad/Tablet or a Smart Phone. The BYC owners live in California near the Silicon Valley, so surely that could find some tech help!

Our closest Rural King would be the one in Angola aprox 110 miles away (hour + 45 minutes)

We do have a TSC about 6 miles away, & family farm & home 30 minutes away

Ask them if they price match. Its why I stopped going to the other stores a long time ago.
Saved me a small fortune on feed, and supplies.

All together there are 4 near me. Rural king, TSC, Local farm store and local feed mill. One is 20 mins, 1 15 and 2 about 20-30 mins.

ugh, I wish we had a local feed mill. We have several within 30 miles, big box feed stores.
I go to TSC (Anderson) for the fantastic lady that works there, she even gives me coupons out of her own purse!
She is always friendly, helpful and has great ideas. She keeps horses and ducks herself.
If she is working, I know i will get an extra discount. But after 2 years, 2x a week they know if I am coming in there I am spending some money too lol.
Rural King (New Castle) has more selection but the staff is not trained, poorly managed and have no clue about the products they sell.
Muncie has been about the same.
Let alone the animals you are feeding!

, not worth the headache for me anymore.
The closest mill is about 40 miles, gas prices, its not worth it. Our dually is 8 miles a gallon, suburban gets 13.
And Their prices don't come close to what i get feed for. My lil tracker I can load 4-5 bags shavings, feed.. 2x a week LOL!
26 MPG and 4X4 so it even goes in the snow

I would love to reach the point of GMO free feed. Its a long ways off for us yet.

Hello all! I'm hoping we can start this forum again! I live downtown Inianapolis. I have 8 hens and have been hen sitting 2 chickens for 3 months!

Calcium is really not good on birds that are not laying--chicks, roosters, young pullets--and should only be fed to a flock in which there are only laying hens. Birds that aren't laying can sustain kidney damage over time from the minerals in layer feed.

Personally, I have not used layer feed in some years now. My girls are on an all flock feed with oyster shell provided. The hens that are laying will eat the oyster shell as needed, and the birds that don't need the calcium ignore it. Starting this year, I also began feeding all flock feed to my chicks instead of getting grower feed. The only difference between most all flock feeds and grower feeds is that things are in slightly higher concentrations--but neither have a particularly high concentration of calcium. The chicks do fine and there's no transition from one feed to another. I've heard of people feeding grower to their adults with oyster shell provided on the side as well.

Where do you buy your all flock feed? I don't think Rural King carries it. (At least mine doesn't).

It has hardly been two weeks since I had to part with my flock and I have already made my list for next time and I really want Rhonda's Mille Fleur Cochin Roos!! I got some cochins from her in the summer and I feel terrible that they are gone.

SO, looking at the websites for chickens, which one's do you all like?

I have about 20 breeds on my "list." Do the mail-order hatcheries get mad at you if you want one or two of that many breeds? It's hard to make a order right now because most breeds are out due to it being winter. So it's kind of hard to figure costs.

Any ideas?

You have quite a list of animals there! I love Nubian Goats. I am hoping to get some when we move.
I had to laugh when I red the kinds of dogs you have. It is as crazy as my mix of dogs. I have a great dane, a beagle mix, and a german yorkie (from 137 lbs down to 7 lbs).

Im so sorry about your flock!! I know what you mean about having a lot of breeds on your list I *think* the hatcheries are probably used to people ordering a few of several things, I've never ordered from one though. I've been debating hatchery vs trying to track down breeders for what I want this spring.
