my son wants me to incubate eggs now that I have gotten 1 egg from my hens. He asked so nicely too. I need to wait until I know the eggs are fertile and I have to pick pairs to mate before the eggs will get fertile. I also need more than 1 egg every 2 -3 days. Maybe in a few weeks so that they will hatch right after Christmas.
I still have one batch of chicks in my basement that I'm trying to get moved outside. They are 4 weeks old but the night temps are so low I think I may wait longer. Not that the temps will improve, but the chicks will have more feathers. But those chicks must be out of the basement for at least a week before I have others hatch as I want to sanitize the area.

No problem. That would be fun to have chicks hatch right around christmas.I have chicks that are around 10 weeks old with a heat lamp still. I am going to shut the light off next week, but they will not get moveed into the barn until a few weeks after that. Just 2 PRIR and 6 EEs I got from rural king

I picked up a paper at the central indiana poultry show I forgot to tell you guys about. It is actually a state 4-H poultry workshop. There were way more adults than kids last year. I figured it would be a good thing for people who are wanting to show, but never have and such. It is at Columbus this year it was at Lebanon last year. (kind of sad it isnt at lebanon I know more people there.

-Raising Broilers and Layers for the Commercial classes (tips on raising, feeding and selecting broilers, pullets and layers)

-Show Superintendent Roundtable (what works and what doesn't, sharing past experiences) 
-Showmanship Clinic (learn how to be successful competing in showmanship classes)

Last year there were food and drinks available and some chickens were there for sell but only a few. 

Hay prices this year have been ridiculous, I won't pay more than $4 a bale. Luckily I have a friend that has some low quality hay he sells to me for $2 a bale, it's just for goats so dosent have to be orchrid grass or anything spectacular.Hopefully you can find some cheaper hay.

I haven't bought hay or straw before so thanks for telling me it is expensive. I'm not sure where to look but maybe the feed store in town has some. I'll see what I can find.

Also, thank you for the info on the workshop. My kids and I would really enjoy going to that.

$6 isnt even the highest i have seen, some people where at $8 a bale here. I am not going to pay $8 a bale for goats they eat just about anything and couldn't care less what type of quality they hay is. You most likely will be paying around $4 a bale, seem like prices go up around now. I don't know if they have this around where you live, but her there are gas stations that have a paper call the free ad paper. They list all types of stuff in there including hay. You could also check on Craigslist. If your local feed store has a bulletin board some people may have posted hay for sale and their phone number, but the feed stores around me don't sell hay.

I was running out of horse hay last spring and asked at TSC! It was super expensive there! I'm with CCCC, look on CL, look for flyers at Diners, groceries, feed mill. Or even farm auctions that are clearing out farm stuff. Wish you were closer, I could find u something cheap!

Not yet. I've only looked at one place because they always have some, but I can check around after I get the kids to school. Since I don't need much, it's not a really big deal, but I always love a good bargain

For those looking for hay, if you have a sale barn nearby it might be a good resource. I haven't paid more than $3.00 a bale for hay and $3.50 for straw this year. Up until last month it had been in the $2.00 range.

In chicken news I think I have my first broody girl. I'm trying to decide if I should order eggs for her or just use some that we have around. This will be my first time but not hers. She is supposedly a fabulous mama. I really would like some SQ bantam cochins for dd to show next year. Are there any banty cochin breeders in the central Indy area? If I don't buy eggs now I will probably be in the market this spring for some and maybe an adult bird or two to show.
