INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I've been thinking about this more and am very concerned about this.      Gail Damerow gives directions in her books on how to thaw the comb then says to put on neosporin and keep them separated from the others so that they don't do more damage to it.

I am pretty gun-shy about how or what to do in a case like this....

I am no expert on frostbite but a totally black comb sounds like it may require emergency measures.  If he were mine I would probably try to find a vet to advise me on what - if anything - to do in this case.

Just throwig a little reminder out there. When using neosporin on a chicken always make sure you get the kind that DOESNT have pain relief

So discouraged! We have had pretty cold weather for the last 2 weeks or so and snow on the ground for the majority of it. My welsummers and blue Andalusian had some black spots on their combs. I bought some bag balm, as someone had recommended, and used it. This morning one of my boy's combs is almost entirely black!!! I made it worse!!
icukeisha ~ I am so sorry to hear that! That must be very upsetting. From what I have read, the comb probably worsened from massaging the Bag Balm into the comb. (See info from my "Chicken Health for Dummies" book below). Bag Balm Protective Ointment is used by many chicken owners as one method to prevent frostbite, and the member who recommend it has lots of experience in raising chickens and other livestock. Professional snow skiers use Bag Balm to prevent frostbite. Others use Vaseline or other similar products as a protective coating.

Please remember that none of us on this thread, and most other threads, are avian health care professionals. We're just chicken owners who enjoy talking about all-things-chickens including health issues. One thing that I have commented about many times is the variation of advice given by actual chicken experts. For example, some veterinarians think DE is helpful for dust baths while others warn not to use it. Personally, I appreciate everyone's advice about their real-life experiences, but I also read other reputable articles online. Additionally, I bought a few chicken-related books to have at home for instant resources. One that I often mention is the "Chicken Health for Dummies" book because it's helpful to have a book solely about chicken health issues. After I gather information, it's up to me to determine what to do next-- if I want to try a remedy or consult with a vet first. Many veterinarians are nice about answering questions over the phone.

I hope that this information below helps. We are thankful that you reported your experience, which others will learn from, although we hate to hear about your roo. Please keep us posted.

kabhyper ~ I just remember that one time you posted a link to your FB and you appeared to a young, beautiful woman. (I sound ancient making that comment, but that's what I remember). Since you weren't brave enough to show your face in person like many of us did at racinchickens's get-together last summer, that's my only clue about your age. (I am teasing you about not coming!)
Another one who didn't come was CCCHHHICKENS who doesn't even know that Phyllis Diller, known by her crazy looks, was one of the first female comediennes who became world famous.

Hi Everyone!

It's been a while since I've checked this thread!

How is everyone enjoying the winter so far? Ugh. I think it's a bad sign to be sick of trudging through the snow in the middle of December. I'm pretty sure the chickens are sick of being locked up everyday, too. Of course, it is Indiana we live in, isn't it? I've been spoiled by the last couple of winters.

My roosters are also getting terrible frostbite -- just like last year. I decided to put neosporin in my rooster (who had mild frostbite) and it also turned his comb and wattles black. What's the deal with that? I took precautions this year (I thought)...I brought him in when it got 10 or under, I kept them inside on cold/wet/windy days, and finally put something on them. Their coop seems fine - I just don't get the frostbite thing.

BLACK COMB/WATTLES: One of my roosters had HORRIBLE frostbite last year and his comb and wattles turned black, too. He lost the tips of his comb and eventually everything went back to red. It took quite a while, though. I believe the black is dead tissue. Watch it for infection.
Welcome back SIMZ! I just saw your post after I had responded to icukeisha's post about frostbite. I'm guessing that you may have massaged the ointment into the comb. I am no expert, but please see the info I posted on 1841 from the "Chicken Health for Dummies" book.
bradselig posted: And here is about the only good one that turned out from inside the coop

you know some people would say they have angels in the coop with the two little orbs floating!!!! just sayin
bradselig posted: Lol. I see them as dust particles.

bradselig ~ Hahaha You sound like me. Realistic!
Btw, Thank you for taking the time to let me know about the Christmas tree fuses. There's an Ace Hardware near me, so I'll stop in.

I know that everyone couldn't be there-- I was teasing. Phyllis Diller probably used her crazy, colorful clothes and appearance to call attention to herself and be memorable since women had a hard time being accepted into the men's world of comedy during the 1960s. She was also one who helped make cosmetic surgery more acceptable by openly discussing it instead of hiding it as many people used to do. Besides her appearance, she was very talented and funny for her time. And that's your pop culture lesson for this evening.

I had guessed you were 27.
My mug (a more accurate term for me) was posted back in the archives following racinchickens's event.
