INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

The grass seeds are usually treated and used for lawns. Just be careful to check and be sure they aren't treated.
My husband bought various seeds at RK last summer for the grazing frames that he had made. He wrote down the brand name info and googled more about the products before deciding what to purchase. One company even emailed him additional info. Unfortunately DH just went to bed, but I'll ask him about it tomorrow evening. The reason he went to that trouble to make sure the seeds passed the test was because I proposed ordering seeds from this place in Australia. Online Poultry Forage Seeds - Green Harvest The site has good info about different kinds of recommended seeds, even if you purchase them elsewhere.

I do like the still air for hatching too, I just need to stick with using the pantry for hatches. Its very warm, and we usually only go in there 1-2 times a week.
I may continue using the LGs for goose eggs until spring arrives.
I used the same netting, and it was great over the summer. Leaves, fallen branches and the snow gave me problems this fall & winter.
I found 2" nautical netting reasonable on eBay, going to try it next.

Hoping the larger net will allow the snow through, and will better brace it this time.
Will be using it on the breeding pens once they are built, and will order it in a few months.

And the white silkies!

WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!
For those who do fodder, where have you found to be the best place to buy seed? So far I'm looking at seedfarm.com, but I'd love to get a mix of seeds and not all just one kind. I'm only looking at getting about 5# right now to give it a try and see if I can actually grow anything lol.
Last year I got wheat at TSC but it was a pain to get it, and I also tried the plot seed for deer. I am looking at this too

Will check yours out too!

Quote: I had to ask to get what I wanted last year, and have it ordered. It did last til spring.
I did BOSS, and wheat, and I think oats. Had some issues with one of them but wound up fermenting the grain instead.
I did cat cheap litter type trays, but will do the burlap this year and see how it goes.
I wondered about the annual rye grass too, I know my geese were going crazy since the snow melted some!
The were little weed eaters all over the field this afternoon.
I had to actually herd them to go back to their coop, the stinkers!
Quote: LOL so cute! Butters loved the baths, and would fall asleep with the blowdryer. He was always getting messy feet and his head was forever getting FF all over it.
When he became a house chicken the few months before he passed, he still had a bath on occasion. Really miss him.
Ok here are some pics of my coop. I left the top row of siding off I case I needed to cut some openings for ventilation. Boy, it sure looks messy with all the melting snow, but here they are.

this is the east side, the front

. This is the inside north wall. That window is totally covered from the outside. But I think both birds were roosting up the on the wooden diverter which resulted in the frost bite.

. This is the west wall, no openings except for the eves openings. Also a window on that south wall, with a diverter on that window as well.

And since I never posted any pics of the babies mama hatched here they are.

. Mama and pullet and roo

. 2 of the 3 lil boys

. The 3 rd lil boy is the top white chicken

. The last 2 little pullets

Now for the pics if frost bite

. She's the worst of the 2

. And she has the least frost bite.

Both are my only egg layers ATM, although mama finally laid me a brown egg yesterday!

Sorry so pic heavy

Deb
Are the whites leghorn? I love the combs when they tip over, adorable!
Someone decided she needed to be broody, so I decided to show her what motherhood would be like. She didn't care for it.

Aww hehe!

Minmin- I'm so glad they got to you! I thought about it several times today . I really didn't think It'd end well, I ordered early this spring and they didn't make it!!

Brad- your birds look awesome!!

Thanks, I still feel more tired than normal. Dr said it will take weeks to be "up to par". UGH.
The babies are so precious, thank you! DD plans to do another round in January, she has chicken math now too

Glad she picked silkies, I just adore them! Now to get her to join the thread!

I'm not to sure what the whites are lol. I got them from RK. They were marked light brahmas. I found out soon they were not lol. I'm thinking 1 is a tetra tint. She has some black feather spots. The other 2 I have are all white. They are egg laying machines though. And the friendliest of the whole bunch. They will come sit on my lap and fall asleep. Sunday when they saw me coming, 2 of them flew out of the coup to try and land on me, about 30' away, they over shot me and landed in the boat lol.

Good Morning Everyone! I long for the morning where I can catch up on all the posts while drinking some coffee but it's a few days off yet. I just wanted to stop in to say I hope you are having a great winter so far (no freezing chickens) and I hope you have wonderful holidays.
