INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hope everyone had a good holiday and happy new year to come haven't been on lately my appendix burst so been dealing with that but my ladies all seem to really love the weather for some strange reason. Not even the dogs want to go out but they can't wait to get out into it every day oh well and they are still laying consistently which has been great for all the cookies and sweets we've been making!! Hope this finds everyone doing well!

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year and everyone stays safe tonight. We have been working really hard to get our house to where we are finally able to move into it. It has been a very long process since my fiance has basically done everything his self with help occasionally from family members. But I am very happy to say that we are finally going to be able to move in today. My chickens will be very happy as well since they will have 2 acres to run around on instead of the 1/8 acre or whatever it is that we have now. I do have a question. My thought is to keep them in their coop for a couple of days, so they know it as home, before leaving them out to run around. Does that sound about right or should it be longer? There is no run yet. Thank you for any replies. And again I hope everyone has a Happy and Safe New Year.

Well I just went out and got my broodies and brought them into our den. They didn't get off their nests when I moved the boxes to the large rubbermaid tote they will be living in for awhile. After some thought, I feel it's the best thing to do, since they refuse to get up to eat and drink on their own in this cold. I really hope once it gets light in that room, they don't freak out and realize they aren't in the coop.

It all happened so quickly, I didn't have a chance to react. It was also just getting dark enough that I couldn't get a good look a the hawk. It wasn't huge, so I don't think it was the big red tail that has been hanging around. He's very impressive. This one was small enough that getting ahold of a full size American Bresse Rooster might have been more than he bargained for. But I think they are starting to get more aggressive because prey is less available now.

I took a hint from Too Fast's playbook. Build Fort Knox. The new pens are welded wire fence all the way around and overhead also. Once they are all fenced in (last one will be done tomorrow!) I'll work on covering the bottom sections with hardware cloth to keep out the coons and weasels. I'm also burying some fencing to keep out the diggers also. I'll have 5 separate pens. Turkeys, Bresse, Legbars, Polish/cornish and Laying flock for now. I decided to separate the polish and cornish from the others at the last minute because they are picked on so much. My polish too, Penelope (looong story) will be so happy. He won't have Osiris, my Fayoumi roo, ambushing him every time he turns around. I'll also have Merlin and his girls (the Crested Creme Legbars) all separated in their own breeding group. Can't wait to start collecting eggs from there!
Yes a well built coop/run makes for easy sleeping, and a relaxed day as well. However, it's easier to build it strong when you only have to make it big enough for 7-10 chickens. I've seen cooper's hawks walking around, trying to figure out a way in, we've seen great horned owls, many red-tailed hawks, but only one close call from a raptor so far. It was a small hawk, easy to chase away. No signs of digging predators yet, but maybe they've tried and couldn't get thru the buried 2x4 welded wire/1/2'' hardware cloth combo.

We aren't far from Eagle Creek park in Indpls, and have seen a few eagles there, but none in the sky around here.

Yes those fresh eggs make a huge difference when cooking, eh? You recovering ok from the appendix thing?

From what I've read, keeping the girls 'all cooped up' for 3 or 4 days is a highly recommended. I'd also say to only let them out about an hour or so before they'd normally roost, the first couple days when they range. Any way to build a temporary run? You can make something very basic, that way they can see the surroundings before they free range.

Thanks for the Welcome. I'm still trying to figure out navigation and how to get to everything on this site. Glad to be here and hope to meet many more chicken lovers!!
Thanks Kelly for the invite :D

Petrie is standing on her own. She uses both legs equally and can walk. This afternoon when I went to put them up from foraging she was behind the chicken house just standing on the compost pile. I am on my way to get some vitamins/electrolytes from TSC and will bring her in the house for tonight to watch her more closely and make sure she stays warm.

Here's keeping my fingers crossed!!

How's Petrie today?

In 2014, I plan to sell a house I have in Cincinnati. It's an income/restore Victorian house near downtown Cinti & Newport, Ky.
DW is retiring and we don't want to pay 2 mortgages or be long distance landlords.
PM me if you want details.
I don't know the Cincinnati ordinances regarding chickens-sorry.

I'm glad you made it, that is a very risky thing to have happen. We have been using our eggs too. I wish I had more layers and fewer young pullets. But in 2 months I'll have lots and lots of eggs.

I hope you get it sold fast. Having moved in the winter multiple times, I found the housing selection small and favoring to the seller.

Just saw this on the home page.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/845677/map-of-potential-chicken-sitters

I thought I'd post it here because (as a person who definitely needs willing chicken/dog sitters) I think it is a great idea!! and of course, I want Indiana to show everyone else how its done.

So, If you want to be a sitter, and maybe make some extra cash, pin away. If you need a sitter, save or subscribe to the thread.
