INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

If I like them, might be worth investing in one of these! http://www.amazon.com/Seki-Quail-Egg-Shell-Cutter/dp/B000AR2J5M
That's a wierd looking gizmo! The thing we found the hardest about cracking the eggs was that the membrane is a lot tougher to break through than chicken eggs -- almost had to pinch it open (also found this to be true with the duck eggs, but they're bigger to hang on to!) We always cracked our eggs into a separate bowl because we inevitably would get a little piece of shell in with the egg & would need to fish it out before adding the egg to whatever we were making. The shells are cool because they're blue inside.

Quote: I saw those, I would probably get one too! Have a very hard time with peeling the shell away.

I'll bet you bake cakes for dieters and go to twelve step meetings with beer for everyone too................Enabler.! :smack :p

Haha

I've been so busy with work, family, and "farm" I am drowning in posts!

Christmas Eve I drove up to Brads to pick up a couple silkies and even returned with some birds to Indy for SallyinIndiana!
Those BLRW were so pretty, and now I'm all googley eyed for one of my own...
That got me thinking...I only have brown and cream egg layers(IF they ever start laying), so I need to start up an order somewhere!

Anyone out there interested in going in with me??? I saw Gabbard Farms has a nice selection, but they don't seem to have the best reviews. I know it's going to be awful cold over they next few weeks, which means I'm not in a huge hurry. I just want to see if I can manage birds into my budget without ending up with +25 all to myself.

Edited to add... Hardin poultry looks good!
if you are short on their minimum of 10 chicks, let me know. I maybe able to find a couple chicks I could add. Edit: hmm they don't have silkie chicks for sale....just let me know I may still be able to find some chicks.

I will. I have both the LF and bantams, I like the bantams better, personality wise though
That's interesting. Has anyone else had the opportunity to compare LF and bantam Cochins?
Just thought I'd post this to help enable others! Hardin Poultry is having a great deal right now! Spend over $100 excluding shipping charges on their website they will refund $50 back! This is good through 1/10/14. I ended up getting 12 tolbunt eggs and a jubilee orp egg for $67.50 shipped minus the $32 I had in my paypal account from selling chickens/eggs and I only paid $35.50 out of pocket (well more until they refund the $50). And I think it has to be OVER $100, exactly $100 won't cut it.

Their website is www.hardinpoultry.com
bradselig ~ Oh I love that lavender Ameraucana, too! I just love anything that lavender gray color. And they have English Orps! Now I am really confused. Just kidding, too bad they don't have Cochins! It's weird that a Jubilee chick is $20-- I paid $75, but their Chocolate bantam is $100 and I paid $75. Guess it's the ol' supply and demand.
kabhyper~ I LOVE your fuzzy snowman!

I usually like big birds better, but while both of them are sweet, my bantams would much rather be pet or messed with han the LF. The LF do like to follow me around though.

I kinda like my bantams more too but i also raised my bantams from eggs. The LF are a little shy but not horrible. Regardless I'm happy with both and wouldn't get rid of one of the other.

Thats my big question too.. DH wants LF and I do love LF birds, but I also want a few more bantam breeds.
I am just crazy over my little Diana, Fergie and Victoria. Harry is an absolute charmer and never pecks.
I have only had one silkie that was a stinker, but it was only when he was being a broody Dad.
Fluff, my white hen is precious.
Too many breeds and not enough coops

Due to the exceptional cold tonight, I caved and put a heat lamp (red brooder light) out with the birds. My plan is to do this only when the temperatures are to get below zero which is tonight and forthcoming Monday night. Is there a reason why I shouldn't give them a heat lamp? Will doing so spoil them? Either way, they will be cozy tonight.
goodb ~ It seems like especially where chickens are concerned, there are many viewpoints about how they should be raised. I sure don't blame you for adding heat although I agree that the brooder bulbs aren't the best choice. My experiences can be read on page 1908, post 19086 and page 1898, post 18980.
Renae~ Are your RIRs laying?
bradselig and CCCHICKENS ~ I really want chickens that want me to pick them up! My five hens tolerate it, and my orps are more tolerant, but I want ones that love being held. I always liked large chickens and I do like their eggs, but we've found bantams to be really adorable.

I have both. The large fowl cochins are very mellow. Since lavender had her chicks, and I spent so much time with her, I can now pick her up and do just about anything with her. Blueberry is huge, and seems intimidating, but I can carry him around like a parrot. He never acts like a rooster. The bantam cochin I have had experience with is Oliver, the little black roo my mother in law now has. He isn't afraid of anything, has complete control of the backyard, all the dogs are afraid of him, and he will try to push people around, when in reality you can reach right down and pick him up and he will fall asleep in your lap. He has a bit of a Napoleon complex. I have always felt that larger animals are more gentle than small ones. I had a pony as a kid that was awful, but draft horses are the calmest things you will ever meet. Bigger animals have less to prove I guess. It's all a matter of preference. Do you want a little brave silly hyper rooster that runs everywhere he goes on his tiny little legs for constant entertainment? Or the regal and gentle giants with all of their fluff, albeit a bit more shy?

Teeny little beautiful nut jobs...

or

Gentle giants...
