INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I would like to show chickens in 4-H but my mom isn't quite wanting me to
O well then I guess it doesn't really matter where you get them from. If you want layers- get red sexlinks, red stars, black sex links, leghorns, rhode island reds, golden comets, Rocks, isa browns, amber links and so on. Some of those are the same things, buy a lot of the hatcheries call them different names.

If she does let you, research breeds and buy from breeders NOT hatcheries. I thought you only wanted layers, hence my original reply.

Quote: First I would pick 3 or 4 breeds that I found interesting. Then I would check with the 4H leader and find out what breeds were shown last year and how many of each breed. I would base my final choice of breed on the one that I could show the best. I know that some breeds have large amounts of chickens entered while others only have 1 or 2 chickens. If I was interested in one of the breeds with little competition that also laid well, it sure would make the choice easier.
As life would have it I prefer RIR chickens and there are lots of them, mostly production but lots entered in the shows.
