Welcome. I don't know any breeders, I hope you can find some one.Hey all. I live in Orleans, Ind. My ex and I had a hatchery for about 3 yrs. Im out of the business now but still have a variety of birds. I'm looking for a pair of Nankins. I had a set two years ago and would like to get another pair. Anyone know of a breeder?
I really like those for the adult breeders. With the colors, I could use spirals or bands to mark the chicks.Just found that Strombergs has colored AND numbered zip ties

Quote: I remember those things, the kids just loved them. That's interesting, so would they "grow" or expand outward as the bird grows?
I would still be checking them every few days tho but do like the idea.
Congrats on the babies!
good point! I had somewhat thought that out, but now that I only have 1 Australorp roo I need to mark the girls Bruce gets instead. So I've been thinking about the numbered leg bandettes. I was getting ready to order 25 bands of each size. However it got me thinking. You really don't want to tag any chick or growing bird. If you did, you will have to buy many sizes in say white numbered 1-25 so the chicken is tagged the same the whole time. You can't just buy the small size in 1-25, medium in 26-50, etc. as when the chick ages, you will be changing its number with each leg band. So if you are tagging chicks with the bandettes, you will be having to purchase a lot of bands only to not use the smaller sizes. I'm hoping I'm making sense, hard to explain what I'm trying to say lol.
So I think I'm going to be buying a bunch of the spiral bands to use on growing chicks. Once they become adults, then they will "earn" their numbered leg band. That way I'm only buying one size for each breed. This may have been common sense to most if you, but I didn't realize it until right before I placed my order lol.
I am looking for a second australorp rooster if anyone has a nice guy thats social to rehome, but will be closer to spring.
Quote: I have to ask him. I know he was invited when he was studying music at Anderson University.
He was in the plays put on at AU while he took classes also. Dad was 76 and went back to college![]()
I have 3 GLS and LOVE the hen. One roo, Charles is psyco, William is somewhat social but timid.

I have spoke with them, but my timing and theirs has not worked out so far. Doug Akers is very active in shows.Has anyone ever bought chicks from akers hatchery in Salem, IN?
I love how their birds look, and have never heard a bad word about them.

I'm not about to say this is the best deal or the right size. I won't let my girl get started on them yet as they are choking hazards for my youngest.
I saw the email from joann's and was really excited to see what size!
They have some amazing sales, I bought my serger from them 16 years ago.
If I only had somewhere to put them!

Ugh thats top of my wish list but DH flat REFUSES to get any...![]()
The fencing alone would be a huge price tag.
He said any bird that could be taller than him is not living here![]()
We visited a farm up by Ft Wayne that had some, but the female was in boom mode the entire time.
She did not like us near her fence at all. Sooo that kinda nixed it for me.
Quote: Yep, just enlarge the sizes. My BR adult pair have a 24x8 pen, and a 3x8 coop.
I made it a bit big since 2 hens will join soon also.
For a laying area, they like secluded and dark. Simple as a board leaned up against a wall.
Will try to get pics if things aren't crazy next few days. Turkeys are ground layers normally.

Is the old thread now closed. Lots of fantastic info there and well worth the read.
Totally agree, mine will be a muddy mess. glad I got all the hay last week!I'm excited to be getting these warmer temps. I hope it melts all the snow in the pens so I won't have to shovel them out. They are FULL of snow.
Is there any hatchery/breeder you guys would recommend for when I get more chicks?
I used Mt Healthy (ohio) for my Australorps. My girls did go broody last fall, just 2. Very happy with them.
I have purchased from meyer, BBW turkey and my 4 african, 4 embden geese.
They do seem to stick to what hatches and sexing. I had -0- roos from mt healthy and ordered pullets.
Meyer was very good also, no losses from shipments. Geese are still young but should know within 2 months on gender.
Some will only offer straight run, meaning unsexed on certain species. I usually seem to get all hens![]()
I really like how my geese look from Meyer. Large, friendly and quite impressive when all of them go into flight mode![]()
If anyone visits just holler WEEWEEES! if they are out free ranging its just a sight to see them all flapping and running to greet you![]()
Keep those fingers crossed for me guys. This weekend is supposed to be hatching time for my broody. I am insane wanting to know if she has babies in those eggs. Tried to candle last weekend but could not tell.
Glad to see there are Indiana BYCers here! How has everyone be doing with the cold? Total of 17 inches and slowly climbing here in the Fort Wayne area.![]()
