I have 2 blue and either splash or white silkie that have hatched so far! Incubating and the excitement of seeing chicks hatching never gets old!

Oh my YAY! I never get tired of it! I dont have anything due til the 28th now.

I have weeded down the original 12 eggs to five. Lock down starts on Weds. I have two that I think are viable and three I'm not sure about. The two are dark all the way through now but there doesn't seem t b any "movement" visible. I hope I'm not trying t hatch rotten eggs!

So...I'm taking photos and tracking how he does. I'm watching for any signs of infection, wetness/rotting, etc. If I see anything that looks like deterioration, inability to eat or drink, etc., I will change my MO. In the meantime:

-I have not treated or even touched it. I do not want to cause more trauma to the tissue by handling it.
-I have not brought him in to warmer temperatures that the outside hen house. It is not heated.
-I have kept the hen shed doors closed if there is an extreme wind chill to be sure none of the "lowers" get chased outside and stuck in those extremes.

These 2 photos were the day he got it. -7F outside; -30's windchill. He had gotten them into the wet feed.

He's really looking good! I think Redman is going to lose about 1/4th of his comb, and possibly part of his wattles. When I was out in the coop yesterday evening I noticed a couple of my hens had blood spots on their backs and necks. I checked them all over thoroughly and there's no signs of injury. Then I noticed there was another with the spots right after Redman was "with" her. So checked him... He is bleeding from under his wattle. I cleaned it and put neosporine on it but don't know it that will b enough.

He looks really good. Mine haven't changed that much, tips went to white/gray but otherwise look good. No signs of infection so far. I did put castor oil on them tonight since we are supposed to get so cold. Not looking forward to those nasty temps again. I haven't taken any updated pics in a while, might do that tonight.

Well, I lost my first adult chicken last night. When I went out this morning, my Jersey Giant was laying under her perch on the ground. Not sure why. She was near the bottom of the pecking order, and never really reached a large size. She was about 9months and I believe never laid an egg. I'll keep an eye on the rest of the flock for anything out of the ordinary. I wasn't as attached as some on here, but it still sucks to lose one. I will replace her though, JGs have always fascinated me. I will try to find a true giant line this time.
racin ~ I am sorry to hear that! You know how crazy I was about my Jersey.
anyone out there live near a Krispy Creme place and want to bring me some donuts?
SallyinIndiana ~ I'm afraid that all the people who surround your area are granola-eaters!

Well, the good news here is that it was 55 and sunny today, so I spent five hours outside with the girls.

Unfortunately, it's supposed to be 3 degrees by morning! Plus 55 mph gusts and possibly snow.

I know you can't feel too sorry for me considering what you northerners are going through!

The bad news is that I think Adeline has vent prolapse!

She's been acting fine, but I knew that she's been laying elsewhere and I've looked around the past week, but haven't seen a stash. Luckily, right before they went in for the night, I checked under that same ornamental grass bush and found 7 of her eggs and 1 of Bonbon's. I've looked in that bush several times lately, but somehow missed seeing the eggs. Anyway, one of Adeline's had a smear of fresh blood. I knew she had laid today because when we were out in the back, she went into the fenced area and when she came out, she loudly sang the Egg Song (extended version!) Anyway, after I checked saw the eggs, I checked Adeline's vent and it looks like prolapse.

I'll take her to the vet tomorrow to be sure. I haven't noticed her or anyone having diarrhea, so I don't know exactly what has caused it. DH and I are getting ready to eat dinner (he's grilling out lol), so afterwards, I'll bring Adeline and Bonbon both in for the night before the arctic blast hits, and I'll give Adeline a bath and put some coconut oil on the area. Geez.

I am thankful that she's acted fine and had a great day.

anyone out there live near a Krispy Kreme place and want to bring me some donuts?
SallyinIndiana ~ I'm afraid that all the people who surround your area are granola-eaters!
Dunkin Donuts and the grocery store bakeries managed to squeeze the actual krispy Kreme shop near us into closing. They ship some of their more popular donuts to the gas stations and grocery stores around us. But typically there are no cinnamon twists and the blueberry cakes sell out fast. There are yeast donuts but of course they are not fresh off the bakery belts. Not that I eat donuts every day but once in a while I like them for an early afternoon snack. Combine that with the lack of availability of the exact donuts I want, and all of a sudden donuts sound great. It almost gives me a reason for visiting KY.
Of course granola makes a nice snack too. A lot healthier and crunchier. But I have that in my pantry so of course I don't want it today. Just like eggs. I always want to bake and cook with eggs when the chickens are in a slow down laying period.
