You made sense. That is how I have always viewed heritage birds.

Ok, good. Sometimes things just sound better in my head then on paper/screen! lol.You made sense. That is how I have always viewed heritage birds.
leslea~ Yes, the thread can be challenging in keeping track of so many conversations, but I think the variety at one time makes it interesting, and I figure it's good for my aging mind! Following this thread is better than doing brain teasers to keep my mind sharp. lolNo worries! I don't feel neglected. I enjoy this thread but it can be tough to keep track, can't it?
I've been "meaning to" unpack the new house since October 1st...somehow I have managed to design an addition to our coop and spend hours researching hens, instead...meanwhile, I have rooms full of unpacked boxes... Who doesn't want to live with rooms full of cardboard? It's a fashion statement, right?
Hey! I think I might have just qualified for the thread!!!![]()
OOH, off to check the chicken cam!
I hope you solve the Mystery of the Bloody Nest Box soon. (I'll turn you into a fiction writer, yet.) Seriously, though, I hope you do. It would be nice if these extreme temps would let up. It can't be easy on the birds.
There are many Parrot Rescues (just google) for anyone interested. I would love to help out, but I could not handle the noise! I'd be like the woman in the film who had to wear noise-isolating headphones! Thanks M2H! It is very well worth the watch for anyone considering a parrot breed.
Its a long term permanent commitment. Parrot breeds are like adopting a child.
They will outlive you, and need future planning.
I am so happy for her! what relieving news. I am sure it putsher mind to ease.leslea~ Yes, the thread can be challenging in keeping track of so many conversations, but I think the variety at one time makes it interesting, and I figure it's good for my aging mind! That's so funny about your moving boxes. I "have been meaning to" move my office into a larger vacant bedroom (formally my son's), but I can't seem to get that project started. And, yes, you're a qualified chicken fanatic like the rest of us!![]()
Mystery of Bloody Nest Box~
I think many of you (including racin's recent post) are correct about the blood in the nesting box resulting from a bleeding comb. It's all making sense: My floppy combed, bossy RIR Nene has a tiny black spot on her comb. I'm guessing that yesterday morning, when they were locked in the coop longer than usual, my EE "Roadrunner" needed to lay an egg in a nesting box. I've seen Nene march into a nesting box to roust another hen out just to be bossy like, "Don't think you're laying an egg in MY coop!" I bet Roadrunner pecked Nene's comb in defense, and Nene flipped her floppy comb, which produced blood spatters on the walls of the nesting box. I thought about calling "Dexter" (TV series) who is an expert in blood stain pattern analysis.![]()
Thanks for everyone's suggestions! I've never found blood around my hens, so to find it two days in a row was perplexing. It has been intriguing to read suggestions that I never would have thought about-- from the mouse massacre to a teeny tiny comb injury.

Oh, this girl is too pretty!
Not possible, don't you know about chicken math? It's a terrible disease, strikes hard and is hard to be rid of when you see all the cute fuzzy butts.Lol I want 4 chicks maximum right now
Been there!Ok, good. Sometimes things just sound better in my head then on paper/screen! lol.You made sense. That is how I have always viewed heritage birds.
(Call from CRSelvey that didn't quote for some reason)
I had to check! I read Freckles when I was a little girl, but I don't remember much about it.I know you write books but have you ever read any books by Gene Stratton-Porter?
