leslea: The Jersey Shore theme is funny. Are you going to paint it?

Yeah, when it gets warm enough I will be repainting it, but haven't decided on a color yet. I need to do something with the roof too, it's currently just painted wood, I think I should put shingles on it or something. I'm going to replace the chicken wire that they used with hardware wire, and I think I'm going to line the coop with a piece of linoleum.

She is my favourite author and freckles is a great book. She was a very neat lady.

I honestly have never read any of her books, but my aunt and uncle live several houses down from the Gene Stratton-Porter Historic Site on Lake Sylvan outside of Rome City. Growing up I spent many summer in there and going to the historic site to buy rock candy! Lol

Heritage Breed Topic

racinchickins ~ I'm not challenging your views since I personally don't know anything about Heritage breeds. I just want to tell you about a recent discussion when I brought Jersey to the vet the other week. I talked to the veterinarian's wife about their farm where they raise all kinds of chickens and livestock. She mentioned that they raise a lot of Heritage breeds, especially cows. She explained Heritage by saying, "You know, endangered breeds." She also said that they raise sheep, which multiply like rabbits. I thought that was interesting, and it probably explains why I never hear about anyone on the thread raising sheep!

racinchickins ~ This is one of my "Human Interest Stories" lol Most people don't even know about this unique place . . . More on the "vet's wife" . . . Years ago, I used to be in an organization with her (Carol Clutter Gormley) and I've been to her family business: About Us - Arrowhead Heritage Farm & Log Cabin Village Carol's father was a VP of Eli Lilly’s International Corporation, and was a collector of historic log cabins that are preserved the huge family estate (see link). Those three hundred acres are where she and her veterinarian husband and grown kids live and raise heritage breeds of livestock and chickens. Dr. Gormley is also an avian vet and he and Carol run a wild bird rehabilitation program. They are both so normal and down-to-earth that you would never know they inherited and live on a gabillion dollar estate.

House Kat ~ Maybe instead of painting it you could adopt some chickens that already have those names. lol

Well the daylight is sure helping. I had 11 total eggs today!
1 pekin, 3 chicken and 7 quail.
Speaking of quail, my little Speckles (Golden Coturnix) is an escapee!
One of them bounced the top of the cage hard enough to knock the top door open!
Cage is similar to this but much bigger:

And Speckles of course flew the coop.

We have a pug that wont harm the birds.
No other housepets, aside from my fish. Tanks are covered. So my biggest concern is food and water for her.
And all the lil gifts she will be leaving until I find her

Hope she doesn't lay an egg some where...

So I'm thinking of getting a pet duck for my dad so when I move out in a year or so he wont be lonely (taking my cat and dog with me) what breed of duck would be good??? I'm thinking a pekin duck but I dont know. Any tips hints or ideas would be great thanks
