INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well, here we go again. 8th day this winter of school closed...due to subzero weather again. Our school corp. has rescheduled makeup days for the first 6 but this week makes 2 more to be made up. On a brighter note, one of our news station's 16 day forecast shows that by Feb. 18 we will finally hit the freezing mark. Then it's a heat wave after that...a balmy 38 degrees by the 20th with rain!!! (and hopefully no flooding

Checked the weather forecast on weather.com, not going to get above freezing for at least 10 days. I'm so over this. I want the ground to thaw to start work on a run. There are so many things I want to get going outside that need above freezing temps for more than 1 out of 14 days.
Ya just had to remind me didn't ya????? and I had almost forgot how cols it was outside.... ( till I open the door )

So sick of this cold. I need to get a house built for Big Man !!!!!!
Speaking of which does anyone close by have Cochin hens or pullets for sale cheep and close by, like an hour away maybe. Big Man needs some girls. The girls I gave him temporarily aint working out too well ... he is TOO BIG !!!!!!

When I went to sleep last night a second egg had pipped. By this morning those two have hatched. They are still drying off, taking turns trying to walk and playing soccer with the other eggs. It looks to me like one more egg has pipped. I have to be out of town all day today but we'll see what progress they've made by tonight.

Woo hoo!

I hate to jinx it - but it looks like the weather will be improving next week! I'm hoping we have turned the corner! There is so much I need to do out in the barn and coop and I need to be able to work without gloves to do it!

On the plus side, I have managed to rig enough tarps to keep most of the starlings out of the coop. There was one in there yesterday, but it seems to be the only one that has figured out how to still get in. I think it will be warm enough on Saturday for me to put the rest of my bird block up. Fingers crossed! I am so close to success!

Guys, Jumping on here really quick, my big brother Jack had a heart attack today. Open heart is scheduled tomorrow at noon, triple bypass.

lilmizscareall~ Haha  Funny magnet! I've tried being a vegetarian before-- several times. I don't particularly like meat, but I found that when I didn't eat it, I felt hungrier and was more prone to having headaches. I researched about the proper combinations for complete proteins and all of that, but I couldn't stick with it. If I were wealthy and had a personal dietitian/chef to create interesting meals, I could do it! :p

I could not kill any animal-- not even a cute little mouse. I couldn't because I was not brought up around farm animals or hunters or guns. However, I admire those who can process their own animals in order to ensure healthful food, while not supporting mass production livestock industries. And I understand the need for humane hunting of over-populated animals.
As far as killing-- Flies are a different story!
[rule]CCCHICKENS~ I first tried it non-cooked by putting in with the "granola mix" I made for my hens, which includes sunflower kernels, chopped nuts, stuff like that. They left the oatmeal on the plate.  On one of our cold winter days, I made cooked, warm oatmeal for them. I thought it would be such a treat, but they did not think it was worth having the sticky stuff on their beaks!  I told them that there were starving chickens somewhere that would love having Quaker Oats! :p
[rule]kabhyper ~ Glad you called an avian vet and found out some good info! Keep an eye on your Silkie! ;)
[rule]Good Luck on your hatching~  minmin, wheezy, and raisinemright !!!! (and to all the others who I failed to mention!)   :jumpy

Ha! I really hope mine like it because I bought two big canisters of it. Surely out if 65 chickens at least 5 will like it!
