INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have the cat so when a tiny bird is trapped, the cat will eat it.  Every so often a bird will get trapped in our garage.  It takes less than 15 minutes for the black cat to get it.  Then eventually DH gets around to removing any uneaten feathers.

If I did not have the cat, drowning would cost less than shooting, dump all trapped birds in a bag and dunk for a while.  Or if you have the nerve place birds in a large plastic store bag and tie shut real good.  Then practice the whack a mole game.  DH has done that when we had a live mouse trap, before the barn cat.  But basically I would treat the small wild birds like mice.  Trap and kill to get rid of any disease.

Oh Sally! M2H is going to croak when she reads that. I have a very good imagination and it almost did me in. :lau

Hi, everyone. I'm looking for a decent brooding box locally. I'm near North Judson. It doesn't have to be beautiful. Just functional. Thanks everybody.

I just use a large dog crate too and wrap it with broken down cardboard boxes half way up to keep in the bedding. It worked well for us because we were able to hang the water and food dishes from the top and slide a 1x2 through the tines for the babies to roost on.

We've tried sand and shaving but liked the sand best.

DH's boss got wind that we were told we couldn't get feed on time and called him back to tell him to come get what he needs. So we just got back with a weeks worth of feed for all!!!!!! thank You God :celebrate
and I found a site that sugested hanging old pipe pans all over the place to keep the birds away so DH is working on that now, just wanted to update. going to help DH now... will let ya know if it works  :fl

I've been thinking about you and your animals all day. I'm so happy for you that you get another week of time to figure out what to do. My DH was laid off once when my son was a baby and it was very very stressful. At the end he found a new position that was even better. I hope the patience and waiting will bring the same for you and your family of animals. :hugs

check it out !!!!!!! check it out!!!!!!!!!!!  it is working !!!!!!!!!!!  :celebrate
well pooo I cant get pic's to  load... I hung pop cans from every place I could hang them close enough that they would hit together and make noise and swing in all the open places birds could get in through, and plastic bags like Walmart bags ect... about 2 ft from the top of the feeders, had to put old lids that I didn't have containers for in the bags for A LITTLE bit of weight. the chickens were wondering wtheck, but then didn't pay them any mine at all. I just hope the birds don't gt used to it...  :fl

Good luck!

Chick crazed and Kab, those are nice pics!!

Oh I forgot to tell you guys something. We have been fighting with mice lately and after reading the comments about glue traps being inhumane, I started looking for alternatives. It's not that I wasn't aware but when I'm trying to keep them out of my kitchen :sick or away from my kids, I just stopped thinking about it. My kids live here and the mice aren't supposed to...Anyway, at rural king the other day I found a four pack of plug in things that are deterrents, but not supposed to be hard on dogs or cats. I plugged them in near the two places I thought they were getting in and I haven't seen any trace of them in almost two weeks. I read that they will bother fish so they shouldn't be placed near but across the room should be ok. It's such a relief!!!

Have you tried lowes for large cardboard boxes or sears appliance stores? If you are looking for a reusable one, the cheapest way we have found is to build one out of plywood or scrap wood and cover with plastic.

I have used those in the past. They last about a yr to 18 months. Then new ones are needed.

Thanks for letting me know. I was surprised that they worked at all, so I'd be happy with them working that long. It's better than any kind of toxins or traps for me. You never know when a cat or dog will get caught instead.

Hello. I have two mixed hens and a Cochin roo. Kabhyper1 is my daughter in law. I am starting to incubate eggs this week. Wish me luck! :)

Those are great I have used them for years!!! Little piece of advice though, they really bother chicks! Had t unplug two of them because the chicks were stumbling around n shaking their heads like they had ringing in the ears. After I unplugged them in my den the babies settled down and are fine now. I have one in every room of my house, haven't seen mice in years. Oh and Btw you have to replace them every 18 months or so because the mice get used to them and th signal gets weak after a while.

Been thru it too. A few years back the company my DH and I worked at closed its doors.
we went from a 6 digit income to almost nothing. I know how you feel. It is a very painful wake up call for sure!
We lost everything, but in the end the only important thing was we had each other. It made us both stronger and more frugal.
One thing you can try is hang up CDs with fishing line or string, it sometimes works a few days.
Plastic grocery bags cut in strips, flapping in the wind and tied to the coop... motion drives them off.
Be creative, even strips of an old Tshirt will work.
