INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'm contemplating placing an order for pullets soon with Strombergs.  There's a minimum of 25 chicks before April and also a breed minimum of 5.  The breeds I'm thinking of are speckled sussex, blue laced red wyandotte, mottled java, salmon favorelle and California white.  I think I may only keep about 3 of each though.  If I do get an order placed in the next couple weeks would any of you be interested in the extra pullets?

My mom likes salmon favorelles but doubt we could get any from you as we live at the very bottom of Indiana and you live at the top.

I have a question I was going to use a Rubbermaid box as my brooder and put a little hardware cloth window in for them. Some people say since they are plastic they get to hot. Anyone used a Rubbermaid box before and if so did you have any troubles?

Before I built my twin bed size brooder I used a rubber made tote. One of the really huge ones though. I never had an issue with it at all. It was good, depending on the number of chicks of course, for about four to five weeks. When they started pecking at each other I knew they needed more room. Be sure they have good air/ventilation too.

Ok everyone knows I'm headed your way next week, but what you don't know is the eggs in my bator (including Kabs Silkies!!!!) will hatch the day before. I want to keep about six of this batch but will have about 8 to go...anyone interested? Some of these are not from Kab though, they are from a casual friend here in WV.

They are all Silkies the ones I have from my friend are from a splash Silkie who died on her during broody. They may have gotten too chilled though to hatch because I've already lost five of them. That just stopped between candleing. I think they are due t hatch tomorrow if I am guessing right.

DH goes to the Doc. today, hope he gets his stitches out and gets told he can start putting weight on it again.

Best wishes for a good visit.

Hope it lifts his spirits too.

Two cool things:

My buff laced polish finally laid her first egg! She was in a recovery coop because she was being picked on, and I found it yesterday morning. I haven't been getting any white eggs, so this was a nice change.

And I was given a Brinsea Ovascope for candling eggs. It is fantastic! The details you can see are unbelievable. I had to remind myself to stop looking and put the eggs back in the incubator. I'm going to try to take a few pics through the scope tonight and see if I can post them.
Awesome news, how old is your pullet?
I am going to look the candler up now, need something better for the darker eggs.

wow, what a rough night!

Hey Indianapolis folks!(any lurkers out there?)
Do any of you have chicks for sale? I have a couple day olds coming and I would really like to brood a few more if I'm going to go through the whole set up.
I wanted to check here, before hitting CL.
I don't right now, should have lavender ops in a few months. The girls arent laying yet, and the boys aren't mating either

I really love the wire dog crates for brooders when they get bigger.
Lets them get to know the rest of the flock, works out great.
