Loved this! I could do it too, I am going to show DH. I like the idea that you could add on if you wanted more breeding pens also. Going back to read the entire article.

Ok this is going to be a little pic heavy!

4 of these little cuties (strait run) Buff Orpington's!!

And these 4 awesomely beautiful Easter Eggers!! Do ya think I have some keepers??
Oh my, they are just too precious! I would say a definite YES.

Columbus RK has lots of chicks lots of variety. A few are clearly over a week old. They are selling black sex linked chicks as straight run but at $2 each. Still it would be simple enough for a person to study some pictures on google and sort out the females. Then there are 2 different bins that each have what I think are the left over chicks from prior shipments. Those are being sold as mixed straight run. Each of these bins had barred rock females in them. The one bin looked to be about 3/4 weeks old and combs were turning red for some of the chicks with tiny tails, indicating a good chance of those chicks being roosters.
But for the majority of the bins, the chicks had come in today. There was a banty straight run mixed bin, Isa Browns, Cornish Cross, multiple bins of what I call Easter Eggers but RK calls by fancier names, RIR, and a few others. There was a bin set up for straight run mixed breed ducks but no ducklings yet.
I am watching for CX, haven't seen any around here yet. Think I will only do maybe 20 or so at a time.

So lily's swollen eyes and sinus' are back. I am fairly certain it is the dust from being in the den. No one else ever has an issue when I deep clean the room. The last two times I have opened the window to deep clean and it got very dusty, she got this. So back to the eye drops and Tylan. I'm only going to do 3 day's this time and see how she does. I need spring time, and she needs fresh air!

aww, I am so sorry. I am having issues with the same turkey hen also.
I may have to keep her separated longer until I can figure out whats happening to her.
I am starting tylan injections tomorrow and nip it quick, need to see what her weight is.

Finally! Batch 2 has hatched. 4/4, and two are legbars and 1 is a female! Not having much luck ratio-wise with the leg bar hatches so far: 5 boys to 1 girl. Hoping my luck has turned. There are 4 legbars in batch 3 that should start to hatch tomorrow. That one also has a lot of shipped eggs. It will be interesting to see their hatch percentage. Then 4 more eggs in batch 4, including an HRIR from SallyinIN.

As far as hatching goes, I am LOVING

my Sportsman. Absolutely no issues. Holds temps perfectly, and humidity runs 45% with just water in the pan and 68-70% with two wicks added. I don't know how it could be easier. I just go to work with pipped eggs and come home to chicks! Its a good thing too, as I didn't time the final hatches very well. I will be leaving on a trip on Saturday, and our nephew will be house sitting and will have to watch over the final hatches. I'll be texting him constantly.........
Congrats on the hen! I am really pleased too, this sportsman has really been great on the quail hatches. lot more eggs developed on this first batch, and are just a few days from lockdown! (March 3) Also, tonite locked down my BCM eggs from Trey (on ebay). I always have good hatches from his eggs, so I am really hopeful on these. He sent 15!
Hopefully your nephew will send you good reports and lots of pics!

Not so sure about sleep tonight, with my first set hatching! One is out and doing good, another egg has peeped and starting to work the crack open. Hopefully I have a few more chicks in the morning. The EE'rs and Buff's are settled in nicely. I have that brooder in the same room as the bator. Hopefully those chicks will coax the eggs to hatch faster!
LOL that might just help!

Another Shopper Alert: A friend told me that Big Lots has yoga mats half price ($5), which I had talked about using in my brooder room to cover the wood floors. I went there, and some higher priced ones that were also on clearance rang up at $3 each. They work well because chick poop is easy to wipe up and the mats are slip-proof and soft. I'm going to get some more tomorrow because I can cut them to use on top of storage boxes and the dog kennel coop, etc. Just in case of fumes, I opened the mats outside and left them out for a few hours even though they didn't reek of plastic.
I also laid down on a clean yoga mat to feed the chicks mealworms this evening. chick rookie-- it does help to be down on their level. Just don't let your wild ones peck out your eyes-- maybe you should wear safety glasses. lol

Thanks for the link to the free egg testing Brad! I will take advantage once I get up to a dozen eggs a week (maybe NEVER)

. I worked from home yesterday but was inside working all day and avoided the cold. When I went out to feed the critters that evening those crazy chickens wanted to come out!!!! They must be enjoying the sun! So they got some scratch out in the sun and then came in the barn for some sunflower seeds, then they were following me around to see what else I was offering. They sure are cute little critters! My Welsummer is a seriously chatty little girl. Is that a breed thing or just her? I also got a big blue egg yesterday. I'm not sure which EE decided to give one up but I am again hopeful that maybe the others will start laying again. I find it a bit ridiculous that I am getting 2 eggs a week out of five girls!
I feel your pain, lol

its really frustrating to have around 40 hens and only 1-2 eggs a day! But I am seeing a few more with the longer days. Now if the temps stay above freezing it will be great!

This is Maggie, one of my australorps.

Two weeks ago today, on Valentine's Day, I realized she was spending an awful lot of time sitting in this rabbit nest box up in the barn loft. So, thinking perhaps she was going broody, I carried her in her box downstairs and put her in one of our growout pens. I put 9 eggs under her to see what would happen. Sure enough, she has been sitting on them the entire time. She'll come out to grab a bite to eat & drink & then snuggle back in. Now I'm wondering with the temperatures so cold yet, should I let her stay in the barn to hatch out the chicks, or bring her inside a few days before? Or bring her and the chicks in after they hatch? Or will she be able to keep them warm enough? We do have a brooder light for the pen that we could use if necessary... If we do get chicks, they'll be an interesting crossbreed mix as I just used the cleanest eggs I had collected. There's at least 1 EE in there, maybe a 2nd, although I'm still not sure what color my other girl lays -- too similar to the rest of the eggs. I think maybe there was 1 or 2 ISA or cinnamon queen eggs, and the rest were either gold/silver laced wyandotte, buff/lemon orpington, barred rock, australorp or an orpington/speckled sussex mix. My 2 roos are a lavender orpington and a lemon/lavender orpington mix. Who knows what these birds will look like! This is my first broody hatch so I'm hoping all goes well -- one more week!!

broody vibes to you, good luck!

I have 2 pasty butts that I cant get over it!! What do I do? 4 day olds.
ACV is the way to go! Heinz is the easiest to find, you are looking for Unpasturized with Mother.

Awe chick you're pulling my heart strings! I'm so sorry! You cry to us anytime! We all have our days/months when the sky is falling but you keep your head up and let us know when we can help. Even if it's just to listen!

this is the 4 day olds set up.
Looks great!

On a totally off-topic note...I forgot to announce about a month and a half ago that I became a mother to an oompaloompa! Yes, my daughter got a role in the Goshen High School musical and, as you may have guessed, they're performing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. She's been pretty excited to get selected in the cast as a freshman. GHS puts on a great show every year. Last year's Fiddler on the Roof was awesome! If anyone in the near area is interested, the tickets went on sale this week ($9 adult/$7 students). The show runs March 13 - 16. If you want more show info let me know!

I bet she is super excited too!
