INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well even though Ive been good and not bought any chicks from the farm stores, I have been busy hatching my own chicks! Here are some pictures of the most recent hatches. There were multiple hatches that took place over about a weeks span. I still have two more Birchen Marans drying off in the incubator before moving to brooder.

I also got updated pictures of the chicks that hatched a week or so prior to this hatch but will work on uploading them tomorrow.
Oh my, they are all just precious! I think I have some blues hatched from your eggs, 9 total hatched!
I will try to remember to get pics this week! I have 5 BCM hatched from Treys eggs so far

2 are the golden color, have to look up what they are again. Hoping for a few more to hatch yet

Leahs Mom ~ Well, I might be crying because I really think "The Rooster" as we call him IS a cockerel-- one of the beautiful English Orps I got from Kiniska.

I suppose I won't know for at least a couple of months if any of the three Silkies from bradselig are little roos. At least he and kabhyper have a constant flow of Silkies if I need replacements after I rehome any. Hopefully, that won't happen.

FlockMaster ~ Sorry to hear about your dog, too. And don't worry about bringing us down-- It's a regular roller coaster on this thread!! Lots of highs and lows. But, that's life, and at least we're here to support one another.

CCCHICKENS~ Yip, she sure looks like Nene, and acts like her-- helping herself. Nene always tries to run in the house when I open the door-- she knows where the frig is and what's in it. Yours is a healthy looking girl-- did you say you rescued her?

We have babies! Mil has 5 out. Ashes is doing great!

kabhyper ~ When I just started to scroll down to see your post, I saw what looked like gray fur and my first thought was Gorilla! haha No kidding-- and a Gorilla is quite opposite of a tiny Silkie. Tell your MIL (who never posts!! lol) Congratulations on her first hatch!! (I have a feeling it won't be her last!)
bradselig ~ Your little chicks are so beautiful! Thanks for taking time to post pics.

HI Everyone. I'm not sure how to join the Indiana BYC'ers so if I'm butting into a thread/conversation I apologize. I'm looking to connect with other enthusiasts and hope this is the right place. I've been considering starting my own small flock for about 3 years and finally made the commitment. My brooder is complete, ready for chicks and I'm sooooo excited. Does anyone know where I can get 4-5 red sex linked? I'm hesitant to buy from Tractor Supply or Rural King but that seems to be my only choice around here. I want a very small flock (don't want to have to purchase more than 5-6) a friendly, hardy, docile bird that's a good egg-layer. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Good Morning and welcome to the Indiana thread!! There has been a lot of discussion about the Red Sex links lately. Those that have had them have noticed that they seem to have a very high rate of health problems since they were bred with only egg laying and not longevity in mind. I'm sure other members will be able to help you find chicks. You might look into Barred Rocks (or any color Rock). They are outgoing, friendly and great layers. They can also be easily identified as female by the white spot on their head as chicks. Astralorps have been mentioned as being friendly and good layers, I don't have any personal experience with them. I'm sure some of the other members will have some other recommendations!

Have you tried craigslist yet? It is chick season and there are all kinds of chicks out there right now! Any particular reason you want RSL?
I just started last summer, a couple weeks ago I added 19 chicks to my flock. I'm raising pullets for friends and I'm trying out several different breeds to see what I like. The majority of my flock I bought from Indiana BYC'ers!
I'm here in Indy too, welcome!

I don't know if I would say I rescued her. As you said she looks healthy and is. She is also a decent weight So here is her story. Her and a dozen other LF chickens were in a 5ft by 2-3ft pen. Without outside access. She was definitely top dog judging by her attitude and size. Many of the others she came with were/are under weight. Working on getting them fat. Even the leghorns are starting to show a little progress. They will never be fat, but will be gotten up to a decent weight. The people just gave them all to me. Said they couldn't take care of them anymore.

Welcome, you shouldn't be to worried about feed store chicks, while they are not (very often) show quality they still are for the most part healthy chicks and make great flock members. If egg laying is your goal most hearitage breeds do pretty well. The Wyandottes (my fav as of now) are beautiful and good layers as are a lot of the breeds. Being in Indiana you might look into the small comb breeds they will be more cold hardy and less prone to frostbite. There are lots of options besides the sex links. But they also make great layers and good Pets most are docil and easy to handle. But back to the feed store chicks. They are just as good as any for the most part healthy and great birds. But you can also try the classifieds section on BYC and see what other members have! Good luck and remember to post picks when you get your chicks!!! Welcome

Barred Rocks and Astralorps are very good with people and great layers I have had both. the Astralorps are good at raising babies too. You might want to get a few BO's too they are good layers and friendly too, and pretty.

There are soooo many good breeds out there, I myself am having to start my flock all over again and am staying with the rose combs and pea combs as much as possible, had way too many problems with frostbite this year. I agree that as far as just pets and laying hen the feed stores are fine. I always insist on picking my own, I look at butts too make sure they are clean and liveliness.

Welcome and enjoy your new babies when you get them. The people here are great and very willing to help.

Quote: My 5 made it ok, but the 2 older ducks did not lay an egg this morning. I guess the new ducklings were a bit too much change for the laying to keep going. When I went out this morning it was 10F but I opened the prop door to see if the ducks would go out. Sure enough those 2 adult ducks bolted. They have food and water (all but frozen) outside so I locked them out of the grow out coop. Now to wait and see if the weather warms up enough to move more ducklings out.

I have some red sex links. They came from a hatchery the same way the feed stores get theirs. The main difference would be bio security. No one really handles my chicks unless they are buying them. The other main difference would be cost. I can't get the chicks in for the same price a retail store can. So my chicks cost more, but have been exposed to fewer people. I have a few other breeds too, but the red sex links are nice layers. They lay very brown eggs (at least 6 a week from mine). BUT they are production birds and tend to burn out after 3 years of laying.
