INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So my little duck isn't doing great, just waiting for the niacin to kick in. I have a youtube video of them swimming like crazy last night, and tonight she got a therapy swim but won't use that leg, she just swims in circles.Hopefully niacin deficiency is all it is.

On a brighter note, I got pics of some of Ashes chicks at my MIL's. She will be posting more pics I'm sure, as soon as the last little cochin mix egg decides to hatch. Ashes is still sitting and being used as a jungle gym by her crazy kids. Since they are large fowl, they will be bigger than her in about 2 weeks. Apparently Gus was a busy boy.... lol Here are the babies.
Ashes and 5 of the six that have hatched. One little slow poke to go yet.

Cochin x probably slw (gus) or cochin?? maybe blueberry did his job finally lol. It does have feathered legs.

RIR x SLW has markings just like SLW but it is red and cream instead of black and gray.

Mom is a jungle gym. She is getting pooped on while she patiently waits number 7 to hatch. I candled it today to make sure it hadn't died and it is wiggling around like crazy filling up most of the air cell, I didn't hear peeping though. I hope it's okay.

BTW Min, how are the silkies doing under diamond?

The babies are all doing fabulous ! Diamond puts up with th bitties but I think she is starting to regret her decision to brood them. Earl is constantly picking at her! He wants t make his own bitties with her but she's having nothing of it!!! I have the bantam/Silkie coop and also the duck box with pen all ready to accept roomies.. Now if th weather would cooperate it would b great!

HI Everyone. I'm not sure how to join the Indiana BYC'ers so if I'm butting into a thread/conversation I apologize. I'm looking to connect with other enthusiasts and hope this is the right place. I've been considering starting my own small flock for about 3 years and finally made the commitment. My brooder is complete, ready for chicks and I'm sooooo excited. Does anyone know where I can get 4-5 red sex linked? I'm hesitant to buy from Tractor Supply or Rural King but that seems to be my only choice around here. I want a very small flock (don't want to have to purchase more than 5-6) a friendly, hardy, docile bird that's a good egg-layer. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I just posted info about our thread on page 2324, post 23234. Also, if you click on the link at the bottom of my signature, you'll see the Indiana Members' List where you can see who lives in your area and what breeds they have. We have many members in the Indy area who might be able to help. Are your chickens going to be pets? Mine are, and I enjoy having different breeds, especially since I don't have a large flock. I love my Rhode Island Red from RK, and she lays every day, but her eggs are medium sized. My Barred Rock lays nice large egg almost every day. My Easter Egger lays beautiful large green-blue eggs, but she lays every other day and takes a couple of months off in the fall.

I had my chicken coop inspection yesterday, the whole thing was...odd. The animal control officer asked me at least four times - in different ways - if our property was only one lot and not multiple lots. I have no idea why it mattered so much to him. Even if our yard were made up of multiple lots, it has no bearing on the city ordinance requirements. There's a meeting a week from Friday where the decision will be made on approving our permit.

HouseKat ~ Gee, I'm glad I live outside the city limits! I didn't know they did a home check and had to approve it, etc. Did you paint over the names of the Jersey Shore people that your former coop owner named his chickens after? lol Maybe that's what confused the animal control guy. ha

Thanks for sharing the article! I had heard that California was improving cage sizes-- it has taken a long time to implement those changes. I love this place: JS West & Companies, a family-owned business that features a “Hens Live” camera feed on its website so customers can view their birds’ living conditions, has spent more than $6 million installing the new cages. Around here, I cringe when I see the evil Tyson name.
Leahs Mom ~ I learned about a new dog breed-- Maremma. I looked it up and it's a beautiful breed, but I wonder if it's difficult to keep their coats clean?
It really feels like spring is on it's way as i got 6 eggs today from my 8 girls the most I've gotten from them in one day

hanakimi ~ Wow-- that's great-- and a good sign of spring!!

On a sour note, I got the plague part 2 and am really sick for the second time in a month!!!!! People need to learn to keep their germs at home so they don't infect innocent bystanders! Boo to being sick!!!
ChickCrazed ~ You poor thing! I have heard of so many people being sick lately. I'm worried about CRSelvey because her whole family was sick and she is still not totally feeling better.
kabhyper ~ Your momma and babies photos are so sweet!

Let's Judge! ~ Here are some more poor quality photos of my beautiful LF English Orpington chicks from Kiniska. (I will take some during the day in natural light as I keep saying, but forgetting to do!) Both breeds are 7 1/2 weeks old
I feel certain the the blue one (Mr. Rooster) is a boy. Any thoughts?
His comb, beak, and legs/feet are larger that the Splash who obviously looks like a hen. Her tail feathers bend downwards and his are getting fluff that looks like Silkie fluff. He has little feathers starting on his neck that remind me of milkweed seed pods (not sure of the significance, but they're different than hers).

Here are two of the sweet Silkie chicks from bradselig:

Good Morning Indiana-ers!

If anyone is looking for a young, non-aggressive rooster, I have this handsome fella available. Unsure of breed. Looks to be about 1 year old. This guy and my other rooster do not get along, so sadly, this one has to go. Mishawaka area. PM me if interested.

Got GREAT news. My puppy is statring to use her leg, right noow she is just pulling it forward, but its a start!!!!! Before it just drug behind her. She still cant bring her toe up, but hay it's a great start for a pup the vet said would end up losing her leg. Stilll no tail control yet, but 1 thing at a time right.

So far the only one that looks like a cockerel is the blue Orp. Sorry, I know you can't have roosters. The silkies are too young to tell
