Got GREAT news. My puppy is statring to use her leg, right noow she is just pulling it forward, but its a start!!!!! Before it just drug behind her. She still cant bring her toe up, but hay it's a great start for a pup the vet said would end up losing her leg. Stilll no tail control yet, but 1 thing at a time right.

Quote: So many things to consider. First the weather, what are the day time highs. Mine are not out in the grow out run unless it is above 40. Ducks grow faster than the average chick but they do need some feathers to stay warm. I have a heat lamp in my grow out pen along with many other birds. Last night's low was 20 so if the grow out area got to 32 the light would come on and stay on till it warmed up to 45. I was up several times during the night and did not see the heat light on once. I have not gone out to check on them yet. Just finishing up with the toddlers 2nd breakfast of the day. Then I'll deal with the chicks inside then the birds outside.
I would not recommend moving the ducklings to a pen with no heat if that pen will get below 45F / 50F. Kind of a do as I recommend not as I do. I think the other chicks and older laying ducks I have are keeping my pen warm and providing a nice snuggle area for the ducklings.
Also once outside I would limit their water exposure so they could not swim until their feathers are in. I have read many sites that say swimming too early for ducklings can be fatal. I guess in nature the mother duck can dry off a duckling and get it warmed up but left to their own means they don't have the right oil glands until they have feathers.

Hmmm....I think it might be time to move the "chicks" out of the house! Lol. Honestly I think it is a partridge silkie that I hatched last summer/fall who didn't do well out in the garage with the cold. I brought her inside and in with some older silkie chicks I had. Looks like she is becoming a hen!

Sally, racin and jchny thanks for the response about room temps. I have it in a spare bedroom that we don't heat but I don't think the temp changes much. I need to pick up a thermometer before I get some eggs started. :)

Also I didn't see anything about humidity with it... Suggestions?

So I was hearing a constant peep from the "chick" room. After awhile, I noticed it was one of my cuckoo silkie chicks. I noticed his butt was wet earlier, but thought he sat int he waterer. So after looking more closely, right below its vent is a very hard internal mass. It's about the diameter of a penny. Thinking the chick maybe constipated, I took him to the sink to soak in warm water. Right before I put him in, he had a normal bowel movement! Now I'm not sure what the mass is. I'm not sure if it is some sort of infection from the umbilical cord or what. I'm off to do some "googling" but has anyone ever had this issue?

Thats weird Brad, I hope you find out what it is! I have a question about internal pipping. The last egg of my MIL's was alive and kicking and internally pipped last night. She told me today it was kicked out of the nest and so she put it in the incubator. It had been internally pipped for almost a day I think. Could it have run out of air and died? What would cause a chick to not externally pip once internally pipped? I'm going to do the float test on it today and candle it. I feel it may have suffocated. It was pulsating hard in the air cell when I looked at it last night.

If they have been internally pipped for kore than 24hrs or so, I found most to die in the shell. If I think it maybe humidity related then I have taken a drill bit and scratched open a little hole to allow oxygen. If still don't proceed further in the hatch, than I'll crack open the air cell and see what's going on. The couple I've done this too have all appeared to be shrink wrapped. After wetting the membrane, I will then wrap up in wet paper towel and put back in incubator to finish hatching. Most have no issues after that. Some chicks are just weak to begin with as well and not all will make it out if the egg.

I did an eggtopsy on it. I knew when I pipped it something was wrong. It's top beak never developed and it didn't have eyes. Poor little thing. The other 6 chicks are perfect. Same temps and humidity. This ones full sibling is perfectly healthy too. Maybe the egg was porous or something weird like that. Well now we know.
