INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Jchny, The kiddie pools are the ones we used last year for the alpacas. I don't think anyone is carrying them yet for this summer. Chick Rookie, it is garden netting from TSC. I think it is 14' x14' it is around $5 or so.
thanks going to see i I can find some. do you think it would last long enough and be strong enough to keep starlings out this year? At 5.00 for a 14x14 I could get my run covered....

ellymayRans ~ I'm sorry! Just be thankful that a hawk didn't attack your other handsome boy! "They" always say that dark colored chickens blend in more that light ones, but I guess if you have "hawk eyes," it really doesn't matter. That's scary.

I was out in the back yesterday with my hens when they sound their "alarm." I looked around and finally spotted a red hawk standing on the ground across the backyard. I grabbed my shovel in case I had to wave it wildly, and slowly walked toward it. I got fairly close before it flew off. Meanwhile, my chickens did the run/fly/squawk procession up to the open door to the fenced-in backyard. The hawk seemed more interested in sunning that caring about my chickens. That's the first hawk I have seen in a long time. The strange thing is that I often saw all kinds of hawks before I had chickens, and since, I've rarely seen any. Turkey vultures, but not hawks.
I haven't seen many hawks here until last week, seems they are coming out of the wood work now, not protected against hawks, never had a reason for it... now I am rethinking that.

Darn teenagers!

I am much better, and it helped to be outside with the flock today.
Glad your feeling better, it was too windy for me to be out much today...

Okay...couldn't resist posting a silly one. (I must be in a silly mood tonight.)

Wow -- there have been a lot of new people joining our thread. I've neglected to say Welcome to all of you! It's kinda like the Indiana BYCers is experiencing people math instead of chicken math!!

Each spring since we've lived here we've had migrating diving birds visit our pond. 2 years ago a male horned grebe showed up for about an hour followed by a female which stayed at least a week. Last year a bufflehead stopped by for a short visit. This morning a pair of diving birds were on the pond. It was just starting to get light out & they stayed almost until the sun was all the way up. I had to use the binoculars to see them clearly, and I got a half decent look at their markings. Unfortunately I wasn't able to figure out what they were before they left. I'm pretty sure it wasn't either the grebes or the buffleheads again. Then a few hours later 3 herons showed up looking for some of our fish to eat since the pond finally finished thawing yesterday. And a canadian goose started hanging around one area of the south side of the pond this morning. I wonder if it has a mate that made a nest close by. Quite the active pond just a day after thawing!

would love to have a pond and get to watch all that.
Thank you so much! I've been only following the silkie threads so far on BYC and was excited to see some pictures of silkies on here. Love to see other types of chickens though too!

my boys, my first and now I have to find hens for them... see you have lots a fellow Silkie friends here

Our original net, stretched nice and tight. I could not get the other net to show up good in pictures since it was loose and I refused to step outside in the snow or cold. I just could not risk even a runny nose with a new one in the house.

@Leahs Mom

My current incubator full of eggs. If you look close there is one egg with tomorrow's date on it. These things happen every once in a while.
The 14 brown ones on the left are from Hardin Poultry and are BLRW. The next 14 in the center are also from Hardin Poultry and are their CCL. Then the other 5 blue eggs also CCL are from Patrick as well as the 4 Bresse brown eggs. The 5 HRIR are from my hens. This will be the first time in a long time that I have set a full incubator. The power needs to stay on for the next 21 days.

Totally with you on the 'No power failures'. I have 26 Bresse, 10 CCL, and 3 BR turkey eggs in mine. And we are close enough that if the power does go, we could both get hit.

Good thing I was given a all white EE cause the one I thought was gonna be.... is not... oh well I still think she is pretty, but her muffs and beard is almost all gone....

these 2 are just beautiful!! love the color in the feathers, but 1 is a roo I think>????

the 2 on the far right BR's, I think I have a Roo in this breed too and I think I got 2 Ro's in the EE's, and the SLW got 1, and my Lt. Brahmas, plus the 2 Silkie Roo's.... got too many Roo's, don't know what I'm going to do??

SLW's

Lt. Brahmas

let me know what ya think...

Couple things though...candled and weighed eggs in the bator today...I just cannot see squat in those eggs! I bought a candler also instead of using the LED flashlight this time and still can't see an air cell or anything else for that matter! Now..the two Olive eggs in there I could see what seemed to be an air cell but was too big for it . Be that at only day 5. Granted these are from the shipped eggs I just set so now I'm really worried! It seemed to be very sensitive and jiggly. I didn't shake it by any means but just holding it and the bit of movement of me placing the candler on it it just was sooooo "loose"

Any feedback from those of you out there experienced with hatching shipped eggs?

I've read on here that a lot of people let their shipped eggs sit for 24 hours after arrival so that if they have wonky air cells, it gives them a chance to re-attach in the right place. My last set of shipped eggs had a lot of weird shaped air cells. Only about 50% ended up hatching, which seems about par for the course with shipped eggs.

Haha. Yes, bantam Cochins. A black roo and a blue splash/blue silver roo over a buff columbian pullet, lavender pullet, and now 2 black pullets thanks to wheezy! I really need to add a frizzle roo to the mix!

Brad
I've got 2 Frizzled boys that are just adorable. Black bantam Cochins. You're welcome to them! I can't breed them with now only having their sister. Guess I will need to set her eggs in my next batch I hatch with my NN bunch ...
Daddy. ..his two boys are identical to him. Just started mounting.

Don't worry her beard will grow back. Someone else probably ate. When bearded birds get food in their beard other birds will eat off and at the same time will accidently pull the fluff and eat it. I have that problem a lot with my AMs. If you really want to grown back and soon sepearate her, kind of like you would to condition for a show. In the second and third pic their is one cockerel and one pullet

If these are on day 5 then my advice will be of no help now, but good for next time. A lot of people, Like Racinchickens said, let the eggs set for 24 hours (pointy side down). Some also don't turn the first few days the eggs are in the incubator. Really shipped eggs are gamble and there is no telling how much the PO shook up that box. All you can do is try and give them extra "care" and hope for the best.
