INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I've read on here that a lot of people let their shipped eggs sit for 24 hours after arrival so that if they have wonky air cells, it gives them a chance to re-attach in the right place.  My last set of shipped eggs had a lot of weird shaped air cells.  Only about 50% ended up hatching, which seems about par for the course with shipped eggs.

Thanks...yeah those specifically were in the very damaged box I posted pics of when I got them. I did let them rest for a day..no turning either. I love hatching but o my it's stressful. ..now shipped eggs just adding to that..taking the fun out of it. I am weighing them all this time and so far they are right on target. I have only monitored air cells and other settings in past hatches those hatch rates were just not acceptable .. I'm working on it!!

If these are on day 5 then my advice will be of no help now, but good for next time. A lot of people, Like Racinchickens said, let the eggs set for 24 hours (pointy side down). Some also don't turn the first few days the eggs are in the incubator. Really shipped eggs are gamble and there is no telling how much the PO shook up that box. All you can do is try and give them extra "care" and hope for the best.

Thanks. ..I did. I did inquire with the breeder about leaving the turner off for the first 3 days while in the bator as I had read the same thing and she said no.. so I didn't. I know they are very much a gamble that's why I've never bothered. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity. I told myself I would be happy if only I got a few out of the many...I need to keep reminding myself of that!!

I've got 2 Frizzled boys that are just adorable. Black bantam Cochins. You're welcome to them! I can't breed them with now only having their sister. Guess I will need to set her eggs in my next batch I hatch with my NN bunch ...
Daddy. ..his two boys are identical to him. Just started mounting.

I wish you were closer! I was just down your way too lol.

Regarding shipped eggs. I've found that letting them rest does nothing for me except make them older eggs! Lol. I typically let them rest all day and put them in the incubator the night they arrive.

Well I guess keep an eye out for a chicken train. I also work in Indy a few days a week if you make that trip or anyone going your way from there...keep us in mind and get Brad setup with one of these beauts! ;)

I had some spare time today so I thought I would try and sex my remaining 10 BBS chicks. I tried sexing them based on how fast their wings and tails were feathering out. They are only 8 days old. I would actually be pretty happy if I was right, because I am thinking I have 6 pullets, 2 cockerels, and 2 undecided (leaning towards one being a pullet and one a cockerel). I put little rubber bands on to mark them so that I can keep track of them and see if I am right. Boys got blue, girls got green, and undecideds got yellow.
Keeping track of their growth:

Those are so cute! Don't u love how chicks just fall asleep in the strangest positions?

thanks going to see i I can find some. do you think it would last long enough and be strong enough to keep starlings out this year? At 5.00 for a 14x14 I could get my run covered.... I haven't seen many hawks here until last week, seems they are coming out of the wood work now, not protected against hawks, never had a reason for it... now I am rethinking that. Glad your feeling better, it was too windy for me to be out much today... :lau :gig Me and DH both... that's great :lau stop you guys your hurting my sides... makes allot of sense.. :th would love to have a pond and get to watch all that. my boys, my first and now I have to find hens for them... see you have lots a fellow Silkie friends here :love O and BTW :welcome
They are so cute! Are they buff or partridge?
Thanks. Ya, I thought it looked dead lol!
While at RK the other day my mom thought all the chicks sleeping in odd positions were dead. I told her they just fall asleep like that-face plant and all! Sure enough some of the "dead" ones stirred after a minute or two and wasn't dead at all. LOL

jchny2000-thanks for the opinion on the sex of my BR! I sympathize with your need of certain roos! I've been trying to find some since last year! I kept getting thwarted at every turn! I'm actually hoping one of those pullets I got DO end up roos! Good luck! :)

Question about light brahmas -- are they good egg layers or just so-so? I have isa browns, orpingtons & australorps. How do the light brahmas compare with egg size and quantity? I'd like to add something different to my flock & still trying to figure out what. Also, in general, what size eggs do bantams lay? I assume it varies from breed to breed, but how much smaller than their LF counterparts? Any recommendations for bantam egg layers? My daughter thinks it would be fun to have a couple...
