INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So next year I'm planning on starting my violet laced wyandottes project. What would you guys here in Indiana pay for a violet laced (aka blue laced silver aka platinum laced) wyandotte?

Quote: I have 2 roos, finally, I just hatched a few weeks ago, but It would sure speed things up!
Both of my BCM girls are laying now! If we could plan a meet up I would take him.
I set one of each girls eggs to check fertility, right now it would just be a mutt hatch (BCM X BA)
So I can at least make sure the girls eggs are productive.
Since I just went down a hen

and Chewie was already over breeding (down to 4 hens with 2 pullets about 2 months away from laying) them I am considering placing a small order for chicks. I am thinking about ordering from Meyer if anyone wants to go in on an order. I'm open to another hatchery also but everyone else seems to be sold out. I want another rock and a couple more blue egg layers and will probably order a couple cochins as well. I was REALLY looking forward to getting the chicks out of my house but I'm hoping in another week I might be able to brood them in the garage.
I would but I am way full over here

Hi!
Totally new to this site and to owning birds! Still learning how to navigate!
Just moved to northwest Indiana, have some land so decided to get some birds.
I purchased some guinea fowl last summer from a lovely local lady to start with, out of ten I have seven left, I think two I lost to hawks and one from unknown reasons, just found him in the coop one day, still.
Well I figured it was time to move up to chickens, I tried contacting the same lady since she was great, but sadly no response, I was getting a little antsy so I ordered them offline from a hatchery. Which i assumed two days and I have em, nope they won't be here till may. So the wait is on....

I'm so happy to have found this site with so many people have ideas and knowledge.

Please jump in, and don't hesitate to ask any questions.
I love my guineas too, and really look forward to keets this spring! They are always last to lay in the spring.
I had several large hatches, and it was so much fun seeing them all running at you out in the yard!

I've bn dosing her with poly vi sol for th last four hours. At least twice an hr. I feel so useless watching her suffer like this! I think I'm cried out! Can't believe my luck with hatches, don't know what I'm doing wrong...or not doing.
Don't beat yourself up. It isn't your fault that it hatched with wry neck.

Thanks, I'm thinking wry neck also but how do I treat it? Is it treatable? Am I going to lose ANOTHER sweet little fluffy butt?
Sorry I wasn't on to answer your questions. Glad Kab got it covered. I have never had to treat a chick with wry neck

Fantastic idea! Can't wait to see how it turns out! :)

I've read pallets are treated with all kinds of stuff and also frequently have insects/eggs/larvae in them. I was considering building a pallet coop myself til I read that. I did find that you can get dog ear pressure treated pine fencing planks for about a dollar a piece. They seem like they'd be a good cheap option.

I think it really just depends where you get them. My dad used to have a business selling pallets and he gives me untreated pallets for my chickens.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes over Harriet! It ended up being MY dogs that got her....she escaped a different direction. I went out at dusk to shut down the coop and do a head count and I always take the dogs out when I do that. They stay in their "yard". I didn't see her, but after I heard her I saw that she was in the dog yard and they had gotten her. I am mad at the dogs but I know I shouldn't be...they weren't raised with chickens and she was in their space.

I have gone back and forth over how to handle the dogs and chickens. I haven't really tried "training" my dogs around the chickens because I have one that I know will be untrainable. She is a cattle dog/lab mix with a ridiculous prey drive. After 3 years of trying to train her not to chase my horses...she still does. I have been yelling at her for a year about chasing the chickens on the other side of the fence and she is not any better. She also chases cars and anything I leave on my kitchen counters (her nickname is butter girl because her last conquest was a stick of butter off the counter).... I think I could get the the other three trained enough to be fine one on one with the chickens, but I know that if the bad one took off after a chicken the pack mentality would kick in so I'm not sure it would do any good to work with those three. Also, if I work with those three one on one I am afraid it will take away any natural fear the chickens may have over the dogs, and I don't want that since I will never really trust the dogs when they are together and will never trust the bad one EVER with ANYTHING.

How have you guys handled the dog situation when you have dogs not trained around chickens?
Oboy, I wish you luck!
I was lucky with our little pug mix, Sadie, she just licks them. She is around newly hatched quail, and won't harm them.
We have had her about 5 years so birds were a new thing for her. I just had to say NO! and that was that.
I couldn't part with a dog that I had raised, tough situation. I had problems retraining one, but the dog wasn't "ours" originally.
We took him home from our campground on the decision that we would foster until we found a home for him, and that was the deciding factor.
I have trained police dogs for protection and search, so this guy was just not retrainable, and am guessing why he turned up "lost"
I took in a stray boxer after I had got my chickens, and saw very quickly he was NOT safe around them, or the ducks/geese.
He was chewing the chain link dog fence to get at them, barking furiously and growling! Tried everything. Wasn't safe to let him near any bird.
I worked with him several months, and the prey drive was just too intense. He was an adult dog, so hard to say how old.

After almost a year, we found a young family with active children that made a good fit for him (Max) and rehomed him.
The other issue was my DD's cat, and our little pug, he was just too rough in his play and would scare both of them.
And he was big enough, he would knock Dad over, that was not safe! Much harder retraining an adult dog.

I'm thinking of rehoming Cricket. I would only rehome himif someone wanted to use him for breeding or flock protection. He would make a nice EE breeder. Anyone interested? Im not desperate, just a thought.
