Do you remember the story of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel?
Quote:
Captain Kangaroo used to read it when I was a little kid...long time ago! The gist of the story is that Mike was under a deadline on a job with his steam shovel and it just wasn't getting done. He was afraid that he wasn't going to make the deadline as he was working kind-of slowly.
Then folks that were walking by began to stop to watch him work. The more people that watched, the faster he worked. More and more people came and watched and the faster he went. And...he finished by the deadline!
A little overview:

Really ??? O So Cool!!! Now if they would just turn out to be Girls!!!!the feather legged one is a silkie. The others I'm not sure of, but I like them! Lol
I didn't think OEGB had feathered legs? Looks like a d'uccle. Not a porcelain , possibly Mille fluer. There are a lot of other colors d'uccle come in though. I've never seen chicks of the other colors, but may want to look into them. From my experience Mille's are darker.
Wow! Looks great! Very jealous right now.
ohh they are adorable! I admire anyone willing to take on 2 puppies at once lol. One puppy at a time is enough for me!
So, anyhow....when I was a little kid the thing that was impressed in my mind was that the more people watched, the faster he got the job done. Just made me think of when you said,
"I think y'all are encouraging me to work harder and get this done faster. "
I figured the black one was a Barred Rock, it was with the bantams so I just wanted to double check. And the other I've narrowed it to three: OEGB, porcelain or mille fleur d'uccle.
Thanks for responses! Off to tend to my chooks and walk the Aussies! Well...I will be walked...
Nothing better than chickens and honeybees! We do both at our house. Lot of ppl in Indiana have honeybees so it easy to get a nuclear hive to start out with. We started 2 years ago and have 2 hives now, gave some queens away last year and got over 50 lbs of honey.loving all the pictures of all the baby goats. Really makes me wish we lived somewhere we could have them! But, i'm thinking beekeeping might be my next adventure, just doing the research first to see what it's all about.
I am sorry for your loss. The same day, I went out to tuck the hennies into bed for the night and was shocked to find my little Sebright, Amy, laying awkwardly by the nests. She must have fallen and broken her neck or something.![]()
My beautiful little Amy.
But the rest of the girls are doing just fine and we've begun free-ranging for the year at last! It was rainy today, but a few days ago, having not seen dry earth in a while, they all immediately created a mass dustbath when I let them out to free-range.![]()
My splash Marans, Frou-Frou. I don't think she knew what she was doing.![]()

Thank u so much! Got 8 on Friday and they are all set up now. Those are really nice looking chicks! I was just at the Niles RK a couple of weeks ago and they were all out, been calling TSC as they are supposed to get more in stock but haven't yet. Have you heard of other places around South Bend selling Cornish X? I actually bought these 60 at the rural king in niles on Monday. I live maybe a 5 minute drive from the store they had plenty when I was there but if you know what day you are wanting to head there I can drive out there and see if they still have some so you don't waste a trip. Just let me know.
Thank u so much! I will have to check these out. Love to read about chickens while hanging with my chickens.Thought I'd chime in on this one. If I could only own 1 chicken book....My most favorite book of all times for chickens is: The Small Scale Poultry Flock by Harvey Ussery. A lot of the book content is also on his website. LOVE LOVE LOVE his book. http://www.themodernhomestead.us/article/Poultry.html Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the articles list. Edited to add: This is a "husbandry" type book rather than listings of diseases, etc. I also own a couple other books that I'd recommend as well...
