INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

What do you guys think of this? I can see a lot of areas where I can cut costs. The roof for one!
http://www.fresh-eggs-daily.com/2012/02/building-chicken-coop.html?m=1
I like it. It's cute just cant see how it will be roomy enough for the amount of chickens you want in it... IMO.

My DH wants to put a shipping container in our backyard... yes you heard me right. On my city lot.
It's cause quite an uproar in my future yard plans, so we are "currently" not talking about it. We have a shed and it'll need to be moved. Any interest? My problem is I think someone would need to take a section of our privacy fence down to get it out...
Other than that, I love how much experience you guys have at doing this already. Maybe if I find a small shed I can wrangle you into helping??? Lol! I need a little one for tool storage and maybe converted into a Sebright roost.
My DH brought one home and said that was what he was going to do with it.....

It turned out to be a goat house after painting... lol

They typically recommend 4 square feet per bird for large fowl (I'm not sure if yours are LF or bantams), especially in the winter when they don't spend much time outside. Some people get by with less, but I have heard you can run into issues with feather picking/bullying. I have 6 square feet per bird right now and my 3 younger Marans were out in the rain all yesterday because they weren't comfortable being in such close quarters with the meanies yesterday. They were so wet I felt awful!

That's why we put a porch on ours..

I like it I think it's very cute. I could put a planter around it and it would be adorable. I know it's on the small side but I could make a slant roof instead of an a frame and save some money there. Those cedar shingles are pricier than some other roofing options. I could use particle board for the parts of the coop that wouldn't be seen, like the roof and floor, I have some laminate flooring already I can put down so that will trim some money off. Over all I don't think I can make it 50$ but I bet I could build it for $350.
we built this coop for 150.00 it is 8x6

Welcome to the Indiana Thread!!!

Here is information for you and anyone else who joins us:

Do you want to be listed on the Indiana BYC Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on the link (Indiana BYC Members’ List) located below my signature to view the Indiana page. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” bradselig and CRSelvey (Cheryl) actually add the info, so you can PM either one of them directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. If you have any questions about this thread, please PM jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.

About the Indiana Thread~
To participate on the Indiana Thread, we ask that you follow byc.com’s rules for family-friendly posts. We have members of all ages. Our thread is known for being very active, and our members are supportive, respectful of each other’s opinions, interesting, and fun! Please post messages and photos as often as you like! Posts are not limited to the topic of chickens. There is no such thing as a “dumb” question! We have members with different experience levels in a variety of interests. Whatever your questions may be, we should have members who can help.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

AVATAR UPDATES
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

Cluck Acres (Curtis) set up a Google Map for just us INDIANA BYC’ers. You must first log on to your Google account or make a Google account. (If you have gmail, just use your gmail password). All you have to do is go to this link....http://goo.gl/maps/UShV6 . Here are the directions. You will see the state of Indiana.. Zoom in to where you live and then click on the red button that says Edit. After you click Edit you will see a hand, blue pin point and a zig zag line on the map. I'm hoping to finish up the interior in the coop in prep for moving the little's into their new pallet palace.
raisinemright ~ That's funny that you call it a Pallet Palace because when you pictured your kids playing Monopoly inside your new handcrafted coop, I was thinking that your chickens live in Park Place!

chick rookie ~ Glad to hear that your DH is better -- and all of your animals, too!
yankeedoodling ~ You have a gorgeous roo! Are those feathers really purple?
kabhyper ~ Cricket is magnificent. Did he go to raisinemright instead of Gus?
bradselig ~ Beautiful birds as usual!

I'm hoping to finish up the interior in the coop in prep for moving the little's into their new pallet palace. I'm also going to make a makeshift run so they can get used to coming and going. I'll keep my bigger girls doing what they do for now. (We are down to 4 layers?? Missing one for a few days. Just up and gone?!?) I'll need to he done nesting boxes built before I move the layers into it. What age should I expect eggs from my new chicks? I have. EE'ers, JG, BR, BO, Black Australorp's, RIR, WLH, Blue Cochins, SLW, GLW, Birchen Marans, I think that's it lol. Any ideas when each of these breeds start to lay?
On your missing layer, she may have went broody..fingers crossed she turns up
sad.png
.
EEs, mine have been very seasonal, and only lay a few months out of the year. BAs are fast layers, started at 19 weeks. GLWs, they took around 26. My BCM are about 8 months and just recently started laying. My lavender Orps lay a nice big egg, but took forever to start also. I have WL, BR, JG and RIR growing up now, so am right there with ya waiting!

Quote: As the chicks develop they create their own heat. It does change the temps. Unless its over 101 grit your teeth and don't touch.. the bator should level back out.
Its hard not to, but the less we touch the eggs an controls the better the hatch will go.
Thats adorable, every so often a bigger chick plays mom!

At that cost, you could easily pay someone to help. What a savings!!!

I agree. I just have no idea what it entails. Obviously the entire thing can't be moved in one piece but how hard would it be to reassemble? And how hard is it to them convert?

I'm really between the two ideas. Lol.

If the walls are sturdy and its under like 9 feet at width or depth, it can be moved as 1 piece. We moved a huge 20 x12 wood shed with a loft from anderson to pendleton. We have done several, if the structure is sound, you don't need a floor to move it
wink.png

Send me a pm, and I can put you in touch with DH. He is the shed movin man!
AWESOME you guys, lets get this co-op going
