So 2/3 are now in lockdown. Hatch is hoped for Easter Sunday!

hatching vibes! I had a quitter too. I do have 1 poult so far, and she is glued to the nest hoping for 2 more!
And one of the eggs has pipped! Hopefully we will have a hatchling soon! If so, it will be my very first turkey pout hatched myself. Of course the other 48 turkey eggs in the incubator are cooking along and hopefully will follow right behind.

AND...I have not one, but two broody turkey hens sharing the nest. Going to build another nest tomorrow to hopefully get the other hens to lay in so we don't mix eggs.

awesome news! Hope the other one hatches. I will bring you more eggs once miss broody gets off the nest

Thinking I may take the poult after the first week, or possibly right away. That may encourage her to start laying again. Thoughts anyone?

oh man! I wonder if Fluff will be broody...

I went down and swapped eggs with @ellymayRans today. My CCL for her BCM. What gorgeous big brown eggs. She has beautiful chickens and peafowl. I can't wait to see what her eggs hatch out to.
I went home and set half of them under my broody phoenix hen. She pecked at me when I was putting the eggs around her, then got busy tucking them under herself.

It was only half because that was all she could fit!

I set the others in my incubator along with the latest batch of Turkey eggs. The hatching continues!

Exciting!
kabhyper, bradselig, jchny, and silkie people ~ My son and his GF were over for the evening and as it started getting dark, my son said that something was wrong with my Splash Silkie. She frequently shook her head and at times her head was leaning forward a little like she was going to fall asleep. Of course, I panicked and brought her in, held her close and gave her some Sav-A-Chick electrolytes. I tried looking at her head to see if I saw any mites or anything, but I swear, it is so hard to see anything through Silkie fluff! She's always been kind of a loner and the most nervous one of the Silkies (I think my former Eng. Orp roo who always thought the sky was falling somewhat affected the Silkies natural easy-going nature. lol). So, I figured that I was probably stressing her more by holding her, so I brought her out and put her in the part of the coop where she, the other two silkies, and their surrogate mom, my Eng Orp Splash pullet had gathered for bed. Then it occurred to me that maybe the Splash Silkie was just tired!!! Duh. Do they shake their heads when they're tired, like they're trying to stay awake until they go in the coop for the night? Could that be a sign of something else?
Its possible she was just sleepy. Hope she is ok tomorrow, if not post whats going on.

Muahahahaha! Caught up!

Congratulations! For what it's worth, I love it when people spell "Muahahahaha" correctly.

Oh wait, now there's another post you haven't read. You're behind again, so sorry.

;-)

In other news, I'm so close to being done with my coop, it's sort of killing me that I have Easter things to do all day today. Our church is dropping 20,000 plastic eggs out of a helicopter.

I thought I had to build nest boxes, but I was looking through the threads on that subject, and I saw several who have used old desk and dresser drawers. I just happen to have a set of drawers from a big office desk that have been hanging out in the garage for ages, waiting for their purpose to be revealed. Now we know. Laziness achieved.

So all that's left for me to do is arrange the nest drawers and the roost, cut a chicken door, and throw together the end cap for the run. Realistically two or three hours of work, then a trip to TSC in Plainfield for supplies, and I'll be in business! Yay!

Is she peeping at you...That always kills me, so pitiful.Huey peeps and complains, then will nip if I try to take them.I am letting her brood this year.

bradselig & all ~ My Splash Silkie seems fine today!!!!!!!!! After reading your post last night, brad, I went out and observed her in the coop sleeping with her little flock and she seemed okay, but I was very relieved this morning when she came bouncing out as normal. I will be keeping my eye on her closely-- when I get up later. Back to bed for now!

Wow that is surprising!

aww, i see one peeking at you too!

:fl

I have the extra girls, if you are interested send me a PM. I can help you figure out what you have if you can get face shots. The waddles are the males are MUCH larger, almost comical! the males only make a tic sound one syllable. females make a 2 syllable buckwheat sound.

Thanks everyone for insulation input. I've done a little rough math with lowe's and menards' websites, and I'm looking at about 100 dollars for osb and another 100 for insulation. I've got until winter to save spare change, so I'll probably go ahead an insulate. Then I'll feel better about not running heat in the coop. These critters survive in the wild, right?

@Leahs Mom - I read through all the posts I could find on FF, and I'm sorry if I missed it, but what's the recipe you use for your coarse-grain mash?

I'm really excited about fermenting feed! I've been making my own kraut for years, and I think it's awesome that the process for animal food is exactly the same. When I get home tonight I'm putting my dog's kibble in a bucket of water! :-D

Sorry - way behind! Just sent a pm.

I'll be honest, I'm posting this post so I'll have 20, and I can participate in the buy-sell-trade forum. :-D

Oh wait, I thought of a legit question!

I've been reading up on fermented feed, and I still have some reading to go, but this occurred to me last night - since I'm buying half-grown chickens from other people's flocks, will I need to do a gradual transition from the food that they're used to, like you do with a cat or a dog? Or will chickens go directly from one feed to another with no problems? From what I've read about chickens' eat-anything-that-holds-still-long-enough tendencies, I suspect that a transition would not be necessary. What do you think?
Again, I'm way behind so this may have been answered....

It's my opinion what whenever you change feed of any animal it should be a gradual transition. Especially with started pullets that are going to be going through the stress of moving to a new place...that's enough stress for awhile.

I'd find out what they are currently feeding and see if they may let you take some of their current feed. Then as you are changing over the feed, switch out a little of the current feed for the new over a week or so until they're totally on the new feed. It will save you a lot of problems!
