Nothing at all. She was just a mystery to me that she looked 30 but acted 12.

That's weird the eggs just quit like that. Probably was a good reason for it I suppose. Maybe they weren't strong enough, porous eggs, deformed embryo. Who knows.

Does anyone on here have pics of hatchling mille fleur or porcelain booted and bearded d'uccle? We lost Petrie after a long battle (she fell or was pushed off the roost in December and made it through all the nasty winter only to get injured again two weeks ago) and this weekend got two little bantam babies from TSC. I am pretty sure that one is either a blue or black cochin banty but the other is frustrating me. She/he has an adorable little beard and little fluffy legs but doesn't look like any of the babies that Murray Mcmurray has on their website of possible breeds included in their assortments!! I am too impatient to wait so if anyone has these breeds/colors and has baby pics I would totally appreciate it!!!

Check out www.whatbird.com and use the search menu at the top of the page. You can search by bird size, color, beak shape, legs, etc to help identify the birds you see. I used this site a lot when I was identifying all the ducks on our pond a few weeks ago. The National Audubon Society's site, www.audubon.org, is also helpful. Just from what you said about it being white with red on the head and long legs would suggest something in the crane family. If it was more gray than white I'd be thinking sandhill crane. If it was truly white with red on the head that would suggest a whooping crane. However Indiana is nowhere near being even close to their migratory path.
Could you tell how much of the head was red? What was the beak like? How tall? it would be fun to discover what you saw!

I'm not sure if show quality cochins can be found for cheap prices, but you never know. We have many members who are fans of cochins. At the bottom of this post, you can click on the link that says "INDIANA BYC Members' List." You'll find a list of members, their breeds, if they are breeders, and counties they live in. Hope this helps.
chick rookie ~ Last fall I kept having trouble with the BYC site when replying. My problem was different than yours in that it was the site and not my Internet connection. I know from experience that the BYC site doesn't Save if there's a glitch in the site or if the connection or power goes out.

I would type out one of my usual long winded replies only to have it go blank. So frustrating! I finally started typing replies (and copying and pasting quotes) using another computer program. Then I would copy and paste my Reply into the reply box and quickly hit Send. You could do the same thing and just keep "saving" as you type after every couple of sentences. I'm not sure if you have a program on your computer than you can use for typing, but even if you have email (not BYC) you could use it to type and Save often. Then just copy and paste it into your BYC reply and hit Send before the Internet goes out. If it does go out, at least you have your reply saved.

I hate that I didn't take a picture. ..I was cleaning out the coop yesterday and noticed one of the broody girls puffing up making noise..so I got close and still to hear peeping. . Didn't know if internal/external pip?! Then she raised up a bit and I saw a tiny foot!! Then that baby poked it's head out from mamma! First time letting a broody hatch but OMGoodness how beautiful!

Sham on you... you should always carry a camera ... lol look who's talking, I have missed so many great pic's cause I didn't have a camera or my phone with me, makes me mad at myself often... bet it was just the cutesiest thing to see.

Chick TV is a lot of fun!!
We've had 12 hatch in the last 24 hours and one more on its way out. I moved 10 of them out of the incubator this morning. I know don't touch but they were trampling the other eggs. They seem happy under the "Momma Hen" now.

I think this is my only Legbar chick that's hatched so far. If so it's a girl right?!?

Jchny- this is actually my 2nd hatch! I'll have to get some pictures of my 3 week olds later!!!

Now I have to figure out where I'm going to put all these chicks!

Where do you buy your grit and oyster shell?
How much does it cost per bag, please include the bag size?

We get our oyster shell from Rural King for $11 / 50 pound bag.
We have not needed grit yet but I'm thinking about offering it in the same way we do oyster shell.
