INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Leahsmom is right. I always have polyvisol on hand. Something about silkies just makes them very prone to vitamin deficiencies. So far I have never had issues with mine, and it has to be the vitamins. I hope your little guys gets better. Also Suki is doing really well on her 9 eggs. It's amazing what they can hoard under themselves. Like little Mary Poppins bottoms. (her purse was bottomless for the younger blood on this thread

I wasn't aware of this potential problem in silkies. I've only had my one roo for well over a year now - but am starting a line of partridge silkies. I appreciate having this information so I can start some preventative measures with my birds. They are two months old now and all seem to be doing beautifully. But some vitamins never hurt! Thanks!

Advice needed please!
The black Silkie rooster I've been talking about that I treated with Epsom salt is not doing well. At this point I am afraid it is internal since I cannot find anything wrong with him externally. I took this video today to demonstrate the problem, he is off balance while walking and gets turned on his side. Then he'll lay down and peck around a bit, get up, wander around and fall over again. Any advice would be appreciated. I tried to locate an emergency forum on BYC, does anyone have a recommendation please?

atrueb00~ I think I've already sent you that Podiatry link that has tons of info. Poultry Podiatry - PoultryPedia - Google Sites
I also just sent the video/info to one of our members CRSelvey/Cheryl who may or may not have insights.

kahyper~ There's good info about spurs at the bottom of the Poultry Podiatry page.
Glad you're feeling better!

ChickCrazed~ They remind me of my English Orp chicks (from Kiniska) because of the large feathers and eyes and small combs. Here's a picture of mine at 3 months. jchny now has the blue roo (sleepy in the photo) and I have the blue splash (whose concerned about my camera).

Anyone been through this with your own kids? Just hoping someone can tell me that you do live through it..........
Ol Grey Mare~ Is she your only child-- or the first one to leave the nest? What are her plans now?
I might not be the empathetic person you need because I've had three kids leave, and I can say (with guilt of course) that it's really nice feeling to have my life back and to be a little selfish for a change!

In fact, our youngest DD is staying at IU this summer even though it's not a good financial decision, but DH and I shuddered at the thought of moving her home for the summer! We have moved three kids so many times and have shuffled so much stuff back and forth, here and there that we couldn't bear the thought of bringing more stuff home when we've been working on clearing the clutter in our house. It's not like she wanted to move home for the summer anyway. I do miss my daughters, but they're not far away, and my son is back in town. My pet chickens have filled my maternal needs, and we're expecting grandchicks in 10 days!

I don't have any experience with them, but I was interested so I read through a lot of the Sebright thread. From what I gathered, they have a very broad range of temperament, from lap-chicken to unmanageably aggressive.

But I have that impression of most breeds.
thanks for the links interesting breed, I am getting attached to the little one so lets hope she is a she and of good temperament. She likes to sit on my shoulder under my hair, can you guess how many times DH has had to untangle her??? lol

That's kind of what I thought; I just couldn't find a straight answer searching the coop building areas of the forums. Esp. since I'm not planning on clipping wings if I can help it.

Maybe that's another good question to ask - does everyone here clip wings? Does anyone not? My chickens will spend most of their time in the coop and the run, and then in a tractor once I build one. They might get an hour on really nice days of free time in the back yard, but that will be the exception, so I'm thinking it won't be an issue. Opinions?
I don't clip wings if I raised them. If I get new adult birds I clip 1 wing 1 time, that gives them time to get used to the place without having to climb trees to put them to bed at night... lol I hate climbing trees!!!!

MY BABIES MADE IT!!!!! I think 2 are permanently mentally handicapped from the long transit heh. The woman called at 550 and I was there at 603 to pick them up. She let me get them 2 hours before the post office opened lol. Super nice woman. The manager is a real jerk though.

Everyone is alive and eating and drinking well. I got a very nice mix of colors, one of the brahmas looks like it's going to be a stunningly gorgeous splash. They're all drinking well...and trying to eat their poo. I didn't take pictures cause I wanted to let them get settled after that long trip. I'm so happy. I can't keep them all but I don't know how I can possibly give any up either. Bah. Just ask ellmay about my chicken math problem lol.

Anyway I also got a tiny bit of work done on the coop but I am hoping to get it done by the end of the weekend. I bought a staple gun thing to put the floor and hardware fabric on the windows and for the trim. It's not pneumatic. I also got some peel and stick shelf cover to go on the removable poop shelves and zip ties for the run. I got a little bit of trim painted. Not sure I'm happy with the trim color I picked but too late now.

Also got Petes birthday present, thank goodness. So we did cake and presents last night.

Pginsber I'm so happy you and your silkie are getting on. I might have some extra material for you to use to handicap your coop lol.

I'm gonna post a request in the indy Co op, but does anyone wanna work on the shed this weekend with me? I will make sure to have the cookies and drinks ready beforehand. And the kids say thanks to everyone who left before the cookies arrived lol.
Congrats on your chicks safe arrival. Glad to know Pet's Birthday present got to him and hope he had a good time, which I'm sure he did. Was the cookies good??

Ok day 20 and we have noise and pipping! We are now GLUED to the incubator lol!!!

welcome, I cant help on the feed store I'm in Terre Haute, good luck and enjoy your flock.

Your English Orps are beautiful! I especially love the splash pullet! They do have very similar large pretty eyes and feathers! I really want a splash!!!! I need #1 my isbar babies to hurry up and grow and #2 I need a broody! Since they are dual purpose I think Bielies go broody and here is hoping since none of my others seem to have any maternal instinct!!!!

I'll have poults starting this weekend, but they aren't 'wild looking'. They are Royal Palm and Royal Palm/Narragansett.
I'd love to raise my own turkey dinners, but we can't take on any new animal breeds at this point -- the barn's full!

Hey, just saw these cattle egrets on the Goose Pond page (in Linton, IN). Did they look like this?

They're really pretty birds!

I have two children (DD and a son who is 13) - she is the first to leave the nest. I do admit I have often daydreamed about what it will be like to have a life of my own - especially since my entire adult life has been spent as a mother - but then the reality of those little panic moments hits and I start thinking about my "baby" being gone . She is Purdue bound this fall, plans include Vet school and then off to the ARMY Vet Corps.
