@ pginsber-The Cornish X are 5 weeks old and know the 11 month old silkies rule the roost! (they are all about the same size but the Cornish X are all meat and the silkies are all fluff) They get along just fine, but I can tell the Cornish X are lower in the pecking order. They sleep in separate coops at night but they visit each other all day long. Yesterday evening, I had 2 Cornish X sitting together in the silkie nest box. They free range together too, though the Cornish X tend to stay close to home and not wander like the silkies do.
That is a cool incubator. I will be in the market for an incubator next year since my girls don't seem to have any maternal instinct whatsoever (the Bielies might but I want those puppies to keep laying!!). I have almost been tempted into taking one of Brad's available silkies but only need a girl (just for the broodiness).
DH cleaned out the duckling brooder yesterday so we let the ducklings out for the first time. It was so funny to watch them move around-they really do move as one flock. Our silkie rooster kept a close eye on them, like he was watching over them for the few minutes they were outside. Can't wait for warmer weather so I can let them free range a little and get out the kiddy pool!
I've been trying to cuddle with each of the chicks daily to get them used to people. My cat happened to be on my lap sleeping so I put the two chicks next to her and they cuddled right up to her. She kept them nice and warm!
My favorite part of having our hen hatch out eggs and take on the 3 silkie chicks is that I see little heads pop up from under her wing. So cute!
I have baby pics and video! Anyone want to educate me as to what "color" my non-white silkie is? I know @bradselig will know but please, anyone, tell me: There is definitely a pecking order already. Oprah & Gayle were so named. Oprah is the queen of the flock, already and she was prepared not to take any @#$% off of my son or me when we unboxed them. The bantam barred rocks are about 3/4 the size of the other bantam chicks. I was surprised they were so much smaller than the others, since they are all bantams. Here's a better pic of Lynda's color: My enjoyment of the streaming chick cams seems to have been a good thing, too. I did a video of my dogs after I let them out of their crate, with the chicks peeping away in the brooder. My dogs were oblivious. They have been listening to the chicks peep on the TV in the same room for months. I even called one of them over and petted him and he didn't perk up an ear or anything. Just, no big deal. Fingers crossed they remain unexcited about the chicks. I know they will show interest when they see us holding them, but so far so good. It is my plan to praise them when they pay no attention to the chicks and to separate them when they do, by sending them outside. I hope they will be trustworthy chicken dogs. I pick up my guinea keets tonight!!! ETA: video of chicks (house is too messy to post my dogs!)
I have my first broody hen. It is one of my Black Jersey Giants. I have tried taking here off the nest a couple times each day for the past three days, but she insists! I don't really have too much room for extra fluff butts, but I think she may be more stubborn than me.
Does anyone around Columbia City or Ft. Wayne have any LF Cochins eggs? I would only like three or four. Thanks and have a great sunny day!!!!!

I decided to move my broody out of the chicken pen before her eggs hatch, so I went in tonight to get her. I picked her up and found that of the 6 eggs under her, 1 was crushed and another cracked. It must have happened either today or yesterday, because the crushed egg was pretty developed. What a bummer. Hopefully the other 4 are ok. They are Marans eggs from @ellymayRans . I also have 6 in my 'bator because they wouldn't all fit under the broody. If her hatch doesn't work out, I'll try to slip some of the 'bator chicks under her.
Hello I am in Pierceton we have white leghorns, NHR, Australorps, EE and a couple turkeys. I am pretty new at this too, but this website is a wealth of information. Welcome
UGH I have 3 broody australorps! 1 I hand carry off the wicker bench to the coop every night. 2 are hogging nest boxes. Sorry girls not this year! I have 3 broody geese, 2 scovies, and 1 turkey hen that hatched hers.. still brooding
The tom is a fantastic Dad. He was teaching the poults where the food is tonight
. They have a coop to themselves, so its just the tom, hen and the 2 poults. its precious. I am leaving the poults a few more days, the parents are just perfect and the babies are thriving.
We had our first 2 geese hatch today. I had to take them, the other hens were trying to steal the babies, and were trampling them! Poor little things! One hen fully stepped on a gosling, and I was sure it was dead. I ran in the coop and grabbed them. DD was home and helped, the gander was soo angry! Both are fine as of tonight. I am proud he is so fierce, but dang, he can sure bite ya! Both hens have at least 15 eggs under them. The 3rd broody has at least 7 so far. 2 of the goose are my older chinese girls, the 3rd is an embden thats a year old in july. Broody geese are a definite challenge! But am really glad to see my dominant gander does his job. Have a bruised leg to prove it, and his hurt pride being pinned for biting MOM!
Just curious-- what does "being pinned" mean for that gander? I'm sure that hurt but it was worth it now that the gosling is doing okay...hoping for the best!
