Quote: Oh that's awful to hear. She is in good hands, and I wish her all the best. I have seen some really bad wounds heal, good luck to her.

This is Miss gray after I gave her a crest cut a few weeks ago.

(Her crest was so huge it would hinder eyesight for ranging... Her's the before photo:

What a beautiful lil lady.

We'll I'm off to get X-rays done on my back. Should have done it yesterday but I was busy putting up new pasture fence. I hope it's nothing to bad going on. That's the bad thing about pain meds, you don't feel pain while your working. Boy when they wear off I can tell it. Hopefully I can finish the pasture this afternoon. That would let the goats have another acre to graze. Hope everyone is doing great this morning!!!
Hope all is well, Its easy to overdue! I push every second of daylight every day.. and sometimes feel it the next morning lol! I hate taking medicines but ibuprofen has been on my desk a lot lately!

I want to stop wigging out every time I see something new or different about my flock. I'm just not sure how.

Maybe I should put my panic in the form of a question. Like instead of saying, "MY CHICKENS ARE FLOPPING AROUND LIKE IT'S A REVIVAL AND HAVING CONVULSIONS AND THEY'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!" I could ask, "Um, what does it mean when they flop around scratching and flapping at the ground?"

Then someone could tell me they're just making a waller and having a dirt bath, and come back in off the ledge cause everything's fine.

Being a noob is just so, so much fun. I hope you're all enjoy it as much as I am. ;-)
It sure is fun and so overwhelming! I was in a panic first time they dust bathed outside the coop. I thought free ranging had just killed them all! So I ran inside when they all acted ok and looked up what I saw.. WOW they do that?!?

Hi! I am so excited! I have my first broody hen! We have about 9 days left. She's sitting g on 3 EE eggs. If they don't hatch Rural King still has chicks! Hoping for a hatch though!

sending hatching vibes!

Quote: Anderson TSC has quit about 2 weeks now... weird! I will ask my friend that works there whats up. I bet its the competition..

Quote: WOW!

Life with te broody seems to be going well for her. But with it being my first time to have a broody hen, I'm probably getting on her nerves. I keep peeking through the screen door at her. Then when she takes her once a day break, I start thinking maybe she gave up. I almost steal the eggs for the incubator. Then she comes back and starts puffing and somehow goes from a mid sized chicken to a big puff ball sitting on eggs.

its the growl that make me giggle the most, oh my! I think I have a 5th australorp broody now. UGH! 1 of 5 politely lets me gather her fluffed body up and put her in the coop, she likes the wicker bench on the back porch. The rest want to peck. I scoop them off the nest, gather the eggs and put them back. I would love to let them be mommas.. just not possible in the egg coop. Its making me crazy, they are my best layers!

They are in heaven now. 1 more acre of pasture to graze on!!
But is your back ok? Awesome about the pasture, they appreciate it for sure!

Lot of good ideas! I am not good with electrical stuff at all.
Last summer I had a couple of hens that suffered from fowl pox pretty bad. I know that this is spread by mosqitoes but is there anything I can do to prevent it or make it easier on the birds. Just want to get a jump on it.
Try looking here:

I remember reading about vaccine prevention on one of these threads. Hopefully someone can help you more, good luck!

So, I went to a feed store today. It shall remain nameless to protect the innocent (me!). The lady working was rather helpful, but also very negative. She asked about my biddies and I told her. She proceeded to warn me that my silkies weren't cold hardy and my BRs would be aggressive to my children. All my chickens, actually. She said all bantams are aggressive.

Surprised she didn't tell me my guineas would fly the coop and NEVER return the day I let them out.

If it were not for BYC and the awesomeness that is the internet leading me to read up on these birds for 10 years, I'd have left that store very upset. As it was, I was able to say "Okay," and change the subject.

I know some people have lost silkies outside in the cold winter, especially the polar vortex. But who's to say my coop isn't going to be warm enough with its square footage, insulatin, and a flock of 8 in there together? Maybe she will be right and all my chickens will attack my kids even though we are handling them every day and going to feed them treats. I guess I'll be glad to see 'em freeze then, huh?

WTHeck is wrong with people? She said all of that in a helpful, nice way, but...I came home and googled what she said and as usual, it's one of those "your mileage may vary" things.

Just needed to vent.
UGH I would vent too!!! Its sad to run into a negative person. Unfortunately, that type of banter will shy people away from keeping birds. Just sad.
I think a lot of bird personality depends on how they are raised, but do not agree with anything she said,. My oldest BR hen is sweet, and I got her half grown, Mabel has never pecked a person, even a small child. I bought more BRs this spring because I love their friendly demeanor, these chicks are just like Mabel. I raise OEGB and they are absolutely the most people friendly birds I have. Silkies are more sensitive to cold, no more than guinea. My adults did fine outdoors in their coops this winter, I moved any birds under 6 months into my porch after losing some keets that were a late august hatch. This winter was exceptionally brutal. Some of my birds can't take that kind of cold, and I just learn my breeds and prepare to house them properly for the weather we have.

Quote: Agreed.

I got 23 leghorn pullets I would guess a couple of weeks old at rural king for a buck a price. They were overcrowded with others and started to peck each other. They had blue coat on them. I have a red bulb in my brooder and haven't had trouble. Got a heck of a deal.
Awesome deal, I got my 8 pullets at the same price. Now I need a roo

Goodness, they are precious! Congrats on all the chicks.. Some of mine (lavender guinea) are from trey also! I am leaning chocolate PIED so he really blessed you with some beauties

His guineas were one of my best hatches last year, and I had quite an assortment from him. Winter was hard on the late summer keets, so I wont hatch past july this year. When they are around 4 months, we can tell what sex they are.
Well, fantastic! We are calling them Thelma & Louise for now, but we can change those names to Elmer &/or Louie if necessary! They are doing great this morning. All of the babies are.

Ol Wise Grey Mare ~ I've encountered more variations and complications in raising chickens than I did when raising children!

leslea ~ It is too bad that the saleswoman had to rain on your parade! She probably thought she was giving you practical advice, but her generalizations were so "cut and dry" that she not only misinformed you, but also caused unnecessary worry. It's annoying when people feel they must after the fact start listing everything you did wrong according to their judgement. Btw, my bantam Bonbon is a sweetie and my BR Tweedy is not aggressive. Silkies aren't cold hardy in extreme polar conditions-- but there are many options if it gets too cold for any breed. That woman thinks like Henny Penny . . . "The sky is falling!!!"

Exactly!

I just smiled. "Okay." *smile* "How much do I owe you?"

Maybe she will be right, but I SURE hope not.

Well, if all my bantams end up mean and horrible, y'all will be the first to know, I promise.
