Welcome. I know we have some Btown area members. I'm sure there are some closer to Bedford, too. I lived in Oolitic years ago. This is a friendly board. You will enjoy it.Bedford is just south of Bloomington, where IU is. Lots of farmland and wide open spaces.
We've found raising our various animals has been a great way to teach the good, the bad & the ugly of life lessons to our kids. Our first experiences of breeding our rabbits was a great way to also begin talking about the human birds & bees with our kids. We've experienced the joys of birth & new life with our baby rabbits & chicks hatching, as well as having experienced the deaths of beloved animals -- a lot of them unexpected. I think that going through these experiences first with our animals will help the kids when we face the events of deaths of loved ones. It won't lessen the grief, but at least our kids won't be strangers to death & grieving. Thanks, everyone, for the sympathy. My 8 y.o. was attached to that chick. He had named her before we even got her. It was a tough afternoon for him and a tough bedtime. A very sad little boy. We prayed about it but he is just too upset right now. I told him to take all the time he needs. Unfortunately he is blaming one of the other chicks (Oprah, the top of the pecking order) bc DH said he saw Oprah picking on Sparkle this morning. I didn't see what happened but that might have contributed to the situation with Sparkle. Just hard to believe one baby chick could hurt another one that badly. The BR chicks were by far the smallest of the bunch, and everyone is growing so fast, the other BR already looked a lot bigger by the end of the day for Sparkle, that it was obvious Sparkle just wasn't thriving.
I keep blaming myself, but can't think of anything I did wrong. I cleaned out the brooder and replaced all the bedding, mixed up fresh water with probiotics and electrolytes, checked everyone's butts. They're all eating and drinking okay (sleeping now). Everyone seems really happy and healthy in there. Even the keets don't peep that much.
I guss it was just one of those things but it really stinks for my son.

Thank you. I have read some of the post on fowl pox and I think they will be helpful. Thanks for helping me find some answers.
number9 ~ I think that fowl pox is one of the few illnesses that we have not discussed on this thread. I don't remember anyone having issues with it, so it's good to learn about it to be prepared.
leslea ~ I'm teary-eyed reading your post! So sorry about your little chick. Any number of things could have happened, and many chicks don't make it through the shipping process. They're especially fragile the first few days, and your little one may have been born with a problem. I know it hurts and you're beating yourself up.I've been there. Your other little chicks will bring joy to your family with their funny personalities and antics.![]()

Do you want to be listed on the Indiana BYC Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.
Click on the link (Indiana BYC Members’ List) located below my signature to view the Indiana page. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.
If you’d like to be added, send a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” bradselig and CRSelvey (Cheryl) actually add the info, so you can PM either one of them directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. If you have any questions about this thread, please PM jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.
Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.
Avatar Updates
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.
