INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Probably won't b on for a week or so. Had a procedure on my back today, left my legs numb and arms weak. Feel like I've bn run over by a Mack truck...!
Congrats on all th new babies... Sorry for those lost or injured.
Keep me in ur Prayers please, this Sympathetic nerve block wasn't supposed t leave me feeling like this! It was a last resort procedure. Won't do another, hurts horribly!

Hope you get feeling better, Back pain is nothing to play with!!

I will be going to Brad's tomorrow evening to pick up my part of the Beggarticks order and some chicks from he as well, so if any one has chicks coming from Brad that lives around the Columbia City or Fort Wayne area I would be happy to bring them back with me.
Also just put 34 eggs in lock down tonight. First attempt at incubating ever. They all looked good (i think) when we did a quick candle tonight. I will be extremely happy if any of these chicks hatch. Because I am really pretty that we did pretty much everything wrong. Pretty much took the incubator right out of the box and put eggs in it. Well not quite I was able to get my BF to wait a couple hours after plugging it in to see if it would hold temp for at least that long. It's sitting in probably the draftiest corner of the house. We lost power for 3 or 4 hours one day. But they all seem to have really good veining, from what I can tell, the air cells look decent compared to what I have seen on line. And there seems to be movement in them all. So I'm hoping that we at least get some to hatch and survive.

Thanks, everyone, for the sympathy. My 8 y.o. was attached to that chick. He had named her before we even got her. It was a tough afternoon for him and a tough bedtime. A very sad little boy. We prayed about it but he is just too upset right now. I told him to take all the time he needs. Unfortunately he is blaming one of the other chicks (Oprah, the top of the pecking order) bc DH said he saw Oprah picking on Sparkle this morning. I didn't see what happened but that might have contributed to the situation with Sparkle. Just hard to believe one baby chick could hurt another one that badly. The BR chicks were by far the smallest of the bunch, and everyone is growing so fast, the other BR already looked a lot bigger by the end of the day for Sparkle, that it was obvious Sparkle just wasn't thriving.

I keep blaming myself, but can't think of anything I did wrong. I cleaned out the brooder and replaced all the bedding, mixed up fresh water with probiotics and electrolytes, checked everyone's butts. They're all eating and drinking okay (sleeping now). Everyone seems really happy and healthy in there. Even the keets don't peep that much.

I guss it was just one of those things but it really stinks for my son.

We've found raising our various animals has been a great way to teach the good, the bad & the ugly of life lessons to our kids. Our first experiences of breeding our rabbits was a great way to also begin talking about the human birds & bees with our kids. We've experienced the joys of birth & new life with our baby rabbits & chicks hatching, as well as having experienced the deaths of beloved animals -- a lot of them unexpected. I think that going through these experiences first with our animals will help the kids when we face the events of deaths of loved ones. It won't lessen the grief, but at least our kids won't be strangers to death & grieving.

I hope your son will soon be able to enjoy the chicks you have left & not hate them for possibly hurting his favorite chick. And don't blame yourself -- it sounds like you did everything you were supposed to do. Unfortunately, life sometimes just happens this way like you said -- just one of those things -- even though it's so frustrating when it does!!

Minminme ~ How terrible!! Hopefully you'll be turning the corner and feeling better soon.

We will be checking in on you. So sorry you have to go through such pain. Hope that watching your flock can distract you a little. Take care.
Thank you. I have read some of the post on fowl pox and I think they will be helpful. Thanks for helping me find some answers.
number9 ~ I think that fowl pox is one of the few illnesses that we have not discussed on this thread. I don't remember anyone having issues with it, so it's good to learn about it to be prepared.
leslea ~ I'm teary-eyed reading your post! So sorry about your little chick. Any number of things could have happened, and many chicks don't make it through the shipping process. They're especially fragile the first few days, and your little one may have been born with a problem. I know it hurts and you're beating yourself up.

I've been there. Your other little chicks will bring joy to your family with their funny personalities and antics.

About the Indiana Thread~
To participate on the Indiana Thread, we ask that you follow byc.com’s rules for family-friendly posts. We have members of all ages. Our thread is known for being very active, and our members are supportive, respectful of each other’s opinions, interesting, and fun! The Indiana Thread is a diverse group of fantastic members who range from newbies to experienced chicken owners, those who raise chickens for healthful food, and others who enjoy chickens as pets. Please post messages and photos as often as you like! Posts are not limited to the topic of chickens. There is no such thing as a “dumb” question! Whatever your questions may be, we likely have members who can help you.

Do you want to be listed on the Indiana BYC Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on the link (Indiana BYC Members’ List) located below my signature to view the Indiana page. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” bradselig and CRSelvey (Cheryl) actually add the info, so you can PM either one of them directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. If you have any questions about this thread, please PM jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

Avatar Updates
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

Here's a picture of Bonbon's 4 bantam chicks! The two light colored ones are Old English Game Birds - Red Pyle color, the brownish chick in the back is a Mille Fleur d'Uncle, and the striped one in front is an Old English Game Bird - Wheaton color. (according to jchny, the egg donor!)

Below: These not so great photos are of my other "chicks" who are now 4 months old. I knew these photos would be too dark, but I wanted to put a name with the face-- because I finally named them!

L - R: "Ditzy" ~ a very fluffy beautiful Blue Splash Silkie pullet who isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer; "Bixley" ~ a pretty Blue Silkie pullet who has the fluffiest feet (too bad you can't see them-- or the faces of the blue Silkies); "Smalty" (smalt is a blue pigment) ~ a handsome Blue Silkie cockerel who hasn't caused any rooster-related issues yet; and "Eliza" an Imported English Orpington pullet ~ Blue Splash. jchny is now the owner of Eliza's brother, the Blue Roo.

Advertisement: Silkies from bradselig and Orps from Kiniska

Although they're the same age, the Silkies have always acted like the Orps were their parents. Now Eliza is pulled in two directions-- she loves her Silkies, but is really anxious to join the flock of 5 LF hens (who aren't very welcoming). Then, to confuse things even more, my only bantam hen Bonbon has four bantam babies.
