Huh - this whole time I've been planning our "hen only" flock and a big part of that was trying to be considerate of our neighbor's. We are rural and aren't bound by any sort of regulations as far as flock size, roosters, etc, but in the spirit of trying to be a good neighbor I had figured keeping a roo would be a bad idea. So, last night I was out moving the chickens (DH has promised that hell get the chicken door squared away this weekend so I don't have to carry all 16 birds back and forth every evening to get them their outside time in the run) and DH came by as I was moving my one "for sure" roo (have a few others I am questioning

) and DH says, "Are you sure you don't want to just keep him?" I said something about the neighbor issue and DH comes back with, "Well, if that's your reasoning both Charlie and Chuck/Jane were asking about that -- I told them you weren't keeping roos and they said that was one thing they'd been looking forward too because they 'love hearing a rooster crow'". WHAT? I have no reason to think they were being anything but sincere, so I guess it looks like I need to make a point to make a visit to both of them in the next week or two and hear it straight from them -- and if it's true I guess the dude is here to stay (and will need a name). I can't help but think about all the people who have neighbors that complain or cities that prohibit roosters, and here I have both immediate neighbors that actually WANT a rooster living here.

guys I got plans in the works for a breeding pen for my brahmas, would anyone be interested? Im thinking about doing them on a pre order basis only hatching what people want.


Second of all, does anyone around know where I can get a NICE buff orp?


Lastly does anyone want a very pretty blrw with excellent color and lacing but poor type?

A little off Chickens and back on my goats for a sec. Today we are selling our first Nubian kids today. A retired vet from my home town is buying a buckling and a unrelated doeling for his future breeding program! At first he was just going to get the buckling but loved our goats and how healthy they are! All our goats come from 5 star millkers and have great pedigrees. The bad thing is my daughter got really attached to the doeling he is purchasing. (We were not going to sell any does). But she knows we can go see them anytime and we might get future kids from them two. I'm really proud of what we have done with our herd in the amount if time we have been raising them. It will be tough to see them leaving us but we know where they are going snd it's to a wonderful farm!

I had the same thing happen to me. I live out in the country, but they are narrow lots and I have houses pretty close. I originally did not get a rooster and had both neighbors tell me they were disappointed because they love hearing a rooster crow. After I got my rooster I even had one of them ask if I still had him because they were sorry they never heard him. LOL. The property on the other side of me just sold last year and they are getting ready to build on it. They seem ok with the chickens and I hope they also like roosters because they are about to build on the side with the coop and I have three more boys growing in there!

That is neat, I have considered goats but worry about coyotes out here and really don't have the space right now. What I REALLY want some day are either Yaks or River Water Buffalo!!! They eat so much more efficiently than cows, have leaner meat and richer milk and you can ride them! I need like 100 acres for all the animals I want to collect!!!

I would love to have a herd of goats! I don't know if I have enough property, and it would take some time to talk my wife into it. Guess I'll just keep dreaming!

Maybe I should poll my neighborhood. I found out yesterday that one of my next-door neighbors thought that my barnyard mutt and my two black orps are roos. To be fair, the BM has a pretty impressive comb, and she acts the part.

I'd have a lot of neighbors to ask. There are several dozen houses within a cock's call of mine.

I just picked up a Sizzle chick this week from a NPIP certified breeder in Coatesville/Groveland. She has beautiful birds, and I saw some frizzles in her coop. Her BYC name is skycladfaerielady but I don't think she's on here much. If you want her phone number, PM me.
