INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Everyone who is able please come to the June 16th committee meeting at the government building at 6:30 pm. It's specifically to discuss the chickens. Please please come. This meeting is in Lawrence, IN.

Good deal! I work in Marion as well. We have had our RR's for 2 years and our others are about 5 months old. We love them like members of our family. My wife was terrified of chickens and now she loves them to death. We had a problem with the older ones eating their eggs but we fixed that with better protein in their feed and a larger coop. We build a new coop from scratch from a design I had in my head ever since we got our first set of girls. We had 4 originally but one got sick and we had to nurse her for almost a year before we had to let her go to the big chicken coop in the sky. Now with the new ones we will have 7.....I hope you are enjoying yours as much as we do.........

Upon closer examination (now that I know what to look for) Ariel definitely has a crop problem. I think its sour rather than impacted, because of the squishyness.

I massaged it for a few minutes, and she didn't try to get away. She closed her eyes and made a gurgling noise. I swear she smiled.

Later I saw her vomiting. I've got her isolated with fresh water now. I'll change it in the morning and keep her off food all day.

I hope the flock doesn't kill or maim the new birds. They all spent several hours this afternoon stuffing themselves with clover and ants, so hopeful everyone will be too full and tired to fight much. It could happen. I'll check on them again in a bit.

ETA I'm done editing now. Promise.

Be very careful with the massage! One of our friends did the massage and the bird aspirated and died right in her arms on the spot. This was a person that has many years of chicken keeping experience and she SOUNDLY EXHORTED us NOT to massage even though it is always recommended.

Just a "heads up"... from a friend that I trust.

I use crumbles and built the little guard on the front to keep them from pulling the feed out.  There is still some spillage, but a lot less!!!  I actually prefer the pellets but feed flock raiser to everyone (with oyster shell on the side for the laying ladies) and tractor supply only carries it in the crumbles.

I built mine last fall. Used 4" pipe, I refill mine about every third to fourth day. I feed layer feed pellets in one and flock raiser crumble in the other, I also have a small one with just the angle and 2" of pipe then a cap that I put oyster shell in case they want that. The problem with feed freezing on the sides of the pipe is the only problem I've had with them. They work great!!!!
I have made one for watering the silkies too. It uses an angle and a pop bottle thats easy to fill and is quite handy! I've also heard that you can fill a 5 gallon bottle (like a Big water bottle) with feed and put it on top of the pipe to use as an automatic filler.

Of course I had to include my doggie n my granddaughters puppy. And pics of the coops with the flowers blooming.

This is a tad bit off topic, but still related to chickens. Has anyone seen the new Hardee's commercial? I just saw it and couldn't help but laugh. If you have seen it you will understand how a Hardee's commercial is related to chickens

Love this pic. It is like a little chicken and duck town! Looks so much more fun than just having a barn. I am jealous lol

Lol oh please don't be jealous!!! It is an ongoing project. The next part of the project is going to be enlarging the duck pond. Its going to be approx 5'x8' and 18" deep. With lots of decorative grasses and ferns around it. It was designed by a friend of my daughter who does landscaping.
