Oh my, I hope he make a fast and full recovery!yesterday morning I woke up because Steve (My fiance) wouldn't wake up...his work was calling him and it woke ME up. So, I got up all mad and threw something at him. He still didn't wake up. Well, he's hard to wake up, so I went over and yelled at him and kinda pushed him a bit. He still didn't wake up. So I slapped the **** out of him and yelled at him right in his ear to wake up (I was really getting scared at this point. I'd noticed he was cyanotic and had some vomit or foamy spit in the corner of his mouth and he was breathing 2 or 3 times a minute...very rattley and strained). I told him if he didn't wake up I was going to call 911. He still didn't wake up, and I called 911, getting more and more panicked. Of course the baby wakes up, so I sent the big boys in with him (We also had my stepson there...sigh). A bajillion firefighters show up...to the house across the street. I had to yell at them to get them over. They loaded him up and said he was too unstable to go to St. V's , where he works, and took him to Community North. Apparently sometime in the night he'd vomited and aspirated it, and so he was unconcious from the low oxygenation from the pneumonia. So now he's in the ICU. Maybe he will be out today. He started sorta waking up around 3PM, and stayed up for about 2 hours. He still isn't staying very oxygenated on room air though. And of course he doesn't think he's very sick.
I'm looking for some chicken aprons. Hopefully someone on here has some made up and ready to sell! I've used up all I have, and more girls keep ending up bald. I think that they start losing feathers from the roos, then the other hens helpfully remove the rest in that area. It's happening in all my breeding pens.
If you have any, I take any size, as I need them in small, med, and large. Just send me a pm, and we will work out price and shipping.
Thanks in advance.
stevekwan ~It's good to hear from you! You may want to also contact @PeacefulWalls about some aprons to help your poor girls out!So, I've been a member on here for quite a while, but I have never posted. I just read what others are doing and try to learn something. This is my second year of having chickens. We had them when I was in high school to I guess, but these are my own. I have some new chicks coming in in a few weeks from Meyer Hatchery. I had 6 total. One Golden Laced Wyandotte Rooster and 2 Production Red hens from TSC, I Jersey Giant hen from a local hardware store, and 2 Rhode Island Red hens we got from a friend. After some reading I wanted to get stared on Speckled Sussex, so those are among the chicks I have coming in. My 2 Rhode Island Red hens have never really layed, last year or this year. The backs of my Jersey Giant and Production Reds are bare! Those 3 lay an egg a day pretty consistently. Since I'm getting my Speckled Sussex and that's the Rooster I'm planned on keeping, I ended up Butchering the Wyandotte Rooster and the 2 Rhode Island Reds that rarely layed. I guess that I long story just to say we have 3 chickens in the freezer now! lol!
Hi everyone! I know I haven't been posting but have been reading off & on and finally got caught up for now.
Before I write anything else, I wanted to tell Janet/jchny2000 and LPT that you and your families are in my thoughts!
As far as ChickenFest (I did get my flyer Barb S- Thanks) My husband and I are planning on coming for the day. I am so happy its on a Saturday! The flyer said the donation is 5 dollars each person-- when do we pay this?
CountryHen ~ People can pay when they arrive. It's to cover cost of renting the Barn and any extras they may be needed. If lots of people come, the price per person may be reduced. We were kind of guessing about some things.
Also, about the option, I am fine with the first option, with having the potluck items and just eating whatever is brought.
The Second Option is Potluck and not worrying with grilling. Hahaha Thank you for your input, though!
Please don't mind the poo, the crudity of our building skills or the mess in the garage! Yes I need the step stool to reach over. I realized it was too tall but DH didn't think his saw would do good to cut off 12" off each leg so it stayed that tall. At least I can see them without having to bend over too much!
When I looked at the photo, I was thinking that you have a nice set up! And you should see my garage!
Your chicks are adorable and it sounds like they're lucky that you picked them out.![]()
CCCHICKENS~ I am sorry to hear that! Animals grieve, including chickens. When Violet, my Lavender Orp had to be put to sleep after months of trying to heal her leg injury, Adeline, my Jubilee Orp who was her constant companion was very distressed. She called and looked for Violet for almost a week. When my Flock Leader BJG Jersey had to be put to sleep because of ovarian cancer, the other hens seemed worried and stressed. I think it was not only because Jersey was their leader, but I felt they knew that something was wrong with her and they missed her. Some people will say that I'm anthropomorphizing, but after seeing Adeline's reaction, I did some searching in scholarly databases re animal behavior. I thought I had saved some of the info, but can't find it now. I did find this excerpt of a book that was critically acclaimed when it was published last year. When I read the swimming pool story below, it reminded me of a few weeks ago when I got home and heard my chickens making an unusual sounding racket. I went to see what was going on and several of them were lined up in a row looking straight at the coop dust bath area where I found my Blue Silkie, Bixley, dead. After I examined her, I laid her down on the patio by the chickens so they could see and hopefully understand that she had passed.I lost one of my silver duckwing OEGB today, She was internally laying and I new it was bound to happen but still a little sad. Don't get me wrong, I am sad that she is gone, but I feel worse for her cage buddy. Which also happened to be her sister. She seems a little lost.
Thank You. I am sure chickens, as well as other animals grieve. People don't give them as much credit as they deserve. I like that article.CCCHICKENS~ I am sorry to hear that! Thanks for remembering me & my aprons! I still have a few left after selling quite a few & will be making more. These were made for my large fowl girls (orpingtons, australorps, easter eggers, ISAs, etc). If anyone is interested in aprons for smaller birds I could send a sample & you can let me know how much smaller it would need to be for your birds -- I just don't have smaller ones to do a fitting on!stevekwan ~It's good to hear from you! Just wondering (since I don't have roos), what does everyone use besides aprons-- do you put some type of antiseptic on the sore hens?
It's Clarksville. I'll ask next time I go!
The DD214 (I think that's what it they are) discharge papers are ONLY accepted during Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Veterans Day. If you have a certain military I'd, such as the VA cards, you can get the discount everyday.
Sounds like the beginning of a little crow to me
Thanks for the information. We need new licenses, anyway. That sounds right, Brad. I knew there was some kind of holiday thing they still do.
Leslea, if he's not signed up with VA medical, you might want to have him look into it. For most vets, it's little or no cost, and the enrollment can be done entirely online. It takes a while to get the initial primary care appointment, but as soon as his enrollment is verified, he can go to the VA and get an id card. Here's a little more info on the cards:
http://www.va.gov/healthbenefits/vhic/index.asp
And you can go to the VA health page from there, too.
If he doesn't want to do that, the next easiest option is to get a "Veteran Indicator" on his driver's license:
http://www.in.gov/bmv/2343.htm
If he's doing a license renewal, there's no cost. The only cost is 10$ for a new license if his isn't expired. It will more than pay for itself in Lowe's discounts. ;-)
