Welp. The girl with the impacted crop looked better tonight. The crop was still large, maybe slightly larger than yesterday, but it was much, much softer when I palpated it. It was a lot like a normal chicken who spent a lot of time at the feed trough.

"Trough" looks really bizarre when you type it out.

Anyway, I'm crossing my fingers that in the morning it will have emptied a lot and she's recovering without the need for amateur surgery.

The hot water is so tricky. My doc says at the beginning it causes the rash to spread but in the end it helps clear it up. Right now I can't imagine sitting still for 2 hours. It sounds almost dreamy but then torturous too if the children find out I want to stay still.

I have decided that the chemical inventers of the world need to find a way to rid the world of this ivy. This is my first time getting it, although I'm sure I have been exposed to it in the past. Something must have changed. Before it meant little to nothing to me, now the entire world needs to get rid of it. A treatment needs to be invented that makes the rash go away in less than 12 hours. It is worse than the common cold.

I have fantastic news. Dad not only did well with the valve replacement, open heart surgery and new bypass today, he is already off the ventilator

Pretty good for an 80 year old man! I cannot say this enough, I am truly grateful for all the thoughts and prayers throughout this ordeal.
A week ago I thought I was going to lose my father. We aren't out of the woods yet, but wow. We are very hopeful for him now.

Hey all, are the super tiny reddish tan bugs a chicken can get in their feathers mites or lice? I just found some on my sick chicken, so I'm hoping that is her issue this time. If so, I'm putting Frontline on the flock...unless that is totally crazy.

CRSelvey ~ I am still catching up on the thread. I read some posts today during a break, but stopped just short of your post ~ sorry! However, you may have found the answer to your question in your copy of "Chicken Health for Dummies" on page 191 where Roost Mites (aka Red Mites or Chicken Mites) are described. I suppose I am not a good one to give advice about parasites. I recently posted that I thought my RIR Nene had lice, so I put her in a garbage bag with some Sevin dust in it (her was head sticking out while I rubbed the dust around on her). That procedure doesn't sound like something I'd normally try, but I was feeling like a confident farm hand. Nene was not pleased. You're supposed to repeat it in two weeks, and I asked for advice for using a different product since I didn't think the Sevin dust had helped at all. Nene still looked ratty. SallyinIndiana recommended Frontline, but I was hesitant. Luckily my DS happened to stop by. He checked Nene over, and she was molting! I thought that the white feather cuticle stuff was lice. I once again felt like an incompetent chicken owner. Not a farm hand yet.

ChickCrazed/leslea~ By BR hen, Tweedy, isn't like the stereotype that ChickCrazed described. (just teasing you, CC!) Tweedy has always reminded me of a serious, level-headed rule-follower type. She hates my EE, Roadrunner, who used to be skittish, but has turned into a drama queen. Tweedy has no patience for complainers. She is fine with all the chickens and chicks as long as someone doesn't start something. Today, Tweedy was in the adjunct nesting box in the garage. Four other hens wanted in that same box and the same time. Tweedy hunkered down. Later in the day I found five eggs in that box even though there are other nesting boxes. Hard Headed Hens!

SallyinIndiana ~ Your kitty needs your love and interaction even when he's primarily a Barn Cat. The best way to get rid of poison ivy is to dig it up (wearing gloves, long sleeves, pants, etc., washing afterwards). I would enlist someone who isn't so highly allergic to do the eradicating. To offer some hope~ I used to get poison ivy rashes through my youth. I discovered when I was in my 30s that I no longer was affected by it and haven't been since. I can even touch it with no problems, so hopefully that will be the case with you someday.
I just looked up some info because I remember hearing that poison ivy should never be burned --- and watch out for its presence on summer bonfire logs. SOLVED

I just went out to check on her before she had a chance to eat, and her crop is totally empty. It actually took me a minute to be sure I had the right bird in the dim light of my torch.

The lesson learned is, when isolating and withholding food for crop issues, also put the bird in a cage with no bedding or grit. Nothing but water for several days, then liquid food like raw egg and coconut oil - I'm convinced her crop had soured due to the blockage, and the c.o. helped kill the infection.

So there you have it, surgery has been avoided. Thank the Lord!

Nope. Tell your doctor if he ever has some time on his hands and gets really bored and curious, he should actually read the research on plant dermatitis, and the transfer mechanism involved. I have.

The allergic reaction is caused by the oils in the plant. Once the oil contacts your skin, it's absorbed in about 10 or 15 minutes. While the oil is still on your clothes or cat, it can be spread to new areas of skin, depending on how much is present. After that, your skin has absorbed all the oil it's going to, and nothing, not nothing, will spread the rash beyond the point of oil contact.

Period.

The reason that so many people, including most doctors, think that the rash can spread by itching or other kinds of contact, is that it takes several days for the reaction to progress to the rash, and it takes several more days for the reaction to complete. The first sign of rash will happen where the most oil contact happened, and the rash will progress over several days, sometimes as long as a week before the last of it appears. Also, the blisters release plasma when they're scratched open, which looks like something that should be able to spread something - but it's just plasma. Once the plant oils are absorbed by the skin, they are not released again later, any more than you could put lotion on your hands and a day later rub it off onto someone else's hands.

As far as excluding your cat, there are several things you want to consider - is it confined to your property, or does it roam free? If it can go anywhere, you always have the chance of it bringing something home. You should walk all the shady places on your land looking for ivy, and eradicate it. I don't normally advocate using chemicals, but for poison ivy I make an exception and buy the most evil roundup I can get legally. After hosing down the ivy and a one-foot radius around it, I salt the earth. I'm not kidding. You may decided such extreme measures are not necessary, that's just my process.
