My chickens haven't really slowed down but my quail didn't lay any eggs at all yesterday.

My new duck layer laid me a quail sized egg today. I gave it to my free ranging flock. It just was not worth cleaning.

Yeah, I searched around BYC a bit and a few people said their broodies only came out every 2 or 3 days to poo and did just fine with that. I'll keep pulling her out to eat and drink every day, and see if she finally does her business. As someone said, if it's going in, it has to come out, right? File this under things I didn't think I'd ever talk about until I got chickens...

Margie did finally let loose this morning when she was out! Phew! Then she had her 'angry dust bath', got something to eat and drink, and went right back into the nest on her own. Thanks again for the advice!

Has anyone elses egg production dropped off in this heat?I have 13 layers and only got 4 eggs yesterday.

My girls are working overtime or something. I've been averaging around 20 eggs a day, and I'm not getting any fewer than usual.

By the way, that's about 20 eggs from 8 young hens born in 2014, all laying except the broody and one other taking a break; 5 hens about 2 years old, still laying; 9 hens about 3 years old, still laying but slowing down; 6 hens about 4 years old, still laying but slowing down significantly; 3 hens that are between 7 and 9 years old, laying only once every long while; and 5 bantam Sebrights between 3 and 4 years old, still laying but slowing down (except another determined broody who I'm not letting sit). So about 24 very productive birds and 11 not-so-productive birds laying on average 20 eggs a day. Not bad, I think.

Does anyone have a nipple watering system that feeds into multiple pens/runs? Im thinking of doing this but worried the water wont stay cool very long. Im thinking of trying to covert one of those 5gal insulated beverage coolers and running pvc to each pen . Of course id isulate the pvc but still worried water would get warm and stagnant. Ive also thought of using those water cups that autofill when chickens peck lever. Also thought of putting a recirculating pump on it to keep water moving but dont think what would work on a low pressure system needed for the nipples. I wouldnt be using this for winter just spring through fall.

Would a big block of ice in the cooler work, then you simply fill a milk jug 3/4 of the way full freeze overnight. Make sure to leave the lid off of the jug while freezing. Then for icy water put the milk jug in the cooler upside down. That way the ice won't decrease your water capacity too much.

But thinking of a hose sitting in the yard all day, the water that comes out first is hot while the water later is cold. Maybe icy water in the cooler won't be much help.


I made homemade mayo today. I think it was @hoosiercheetah 's recipe. It turned out nice but yellow from the extra orange yolks. Last time it was tinged but this time the yolks were darker and the mayo is yellow.

ideal has a great special on their sunrise assortment right now. It is straight run though but at $1 a chick that is about as cheap as they come.

Did he make it through the night?  I'm interested in what the vet says.  I noticed one of my cream legbar hens has an injury to her eye.  Presumably from a peck from the boss.  Thankfully, she still has her eye and still seems to be able to see.  It just looks like she went a few rounds with the champ and needs to come back to her corner for awhile and rest.

I'm glad your hen isn't too hurt! Also he did make it through the night. I just got back from the vet's and there's good and bad news. Goods news is the vet cleaned the white stuff out that was in his eye and revealed his eye is still there, but not sure if he will be able to see out of it. Bad news is if he doesn't show signs of improvement by tomorrow, the vet recommended we should put him down . I'm praying he does get better.
