INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

so as its the end of a very sad day i have 7 chickens and 1 turkey all shut up in their coop. my hubs found one of the bodies when he came home, he wanted to make his own rounds and i guess i missed it on mine. he's just as upset as i am, which i found surprising, i didnt think he cared so much. i dont think coyotes would have left any bodies behind, so im suspicious of the neighbors dog again. but like he said the fault is our own, we thought we could have em free range and have no problems.
i loved those little turkeys, my tom was just getting his gobble on and strutting looking all cute. and they would bark and run up to me on their silly long legs.

do i get more birds? do i wait til next year?
hubs says hell make me a big run this summer but i dont know

oh and still without real power - living on our little gas generator

I love the dorkings, so pretty! LOL at your big boned bielie. Isn't it amazing how BIG they are? They are a really docile, fun breed!
Yes, I love these Dorkings! They're quickly becoming my favorite breed (don't tell the Barred Rocks, Easter-eggers, or Frou-Frou!)! And, well, it isn't too amazing how big Vi is, considering this is how I usually see her.

But yeah, very docile! She was pretty shy when she got here, but she's already hopping into my lap like the Dorkings do! :love I'm pretty happy with the selection of breeds I got this year.
[rule]pipd ~ Thanks for updating us with photos of your adorable, interesting chicks! You're always so good about labeling the breeds. ;)
I do what I can. ;)
Oh...and one more thing. The less details you include the less restrictions you suggest. I don't think anyone needs to tell you specifically where to put your housing, what you feed your birds, etc. Does anyone come into your home and check on what you feed your dog and cat? If so, that's pretty invasive. Just my thoughts.... don't invite them to restrict you more than you need.
I agree with this 100%! Delawaremommy, I wish I knew more about laws and ordinances. Only thing I can think of to tell you is ask around the Chicken Laws forum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/37/local-chicken-laws-ordinances-and-how-to-change-them My thoughts are with you and your girls!
So we had the horrible storm last night, i let my birds out this morn, earlier than usual because we had to hook up the generator b/c my house is out of power, so it's about 4am. i had 3 turkeys as well that i let out. so i went out around 8 to check the generator and fill the feed buckets- and no chickens, no turkeys, no guineas anywhere. they usually hang out by the coop and under the pines, i finally found one of my female turkeys peeping along the driveway, i look and find her sister under the pine, dead, feathers ripped out and in a sorry state, i picked her up and took her to the burn pile (b/c a viking burial is the best burial) and the sister (i called them Thelma and Louise) can running behind me peeping and now wont leave the spot i found her in. my male turkey is MIA as are 12 of my 16 chickens! my guineas can back, and im mad at them for not protecting the others-how silly of me but i am. and i'm so sad! i feel like i failed =( just had to share my pain :hit
:hugs So sorry this happened! You shouldn't feel like you've failed, though. There is no way of predicting all the things these birds can get into, not to mention it can be difficult to build secure enclosures if you don't have a lot of money to spare. :/ Don't beat yourself up about it. Pick yourself up, make repairs, and do your best to prevent this from happening again! As a side note, I have never heard of Guineas protecting other birds except maybe from snakes. Guineas are bigger cowards than chickens, honestly. Mine will scream and scream and scream if they see something, but run away if it's bigger than them. Don't be angry at your Guineas. Sounds like they did just what Guineas should do. :/
LOL I love it!!! I fully blame you for my Turkey math so it is only fair that I give it back. I keep dreaming about your sweet little Royal Palm hen so Royal Palms have been on my beady little brain. Then I found Sweetgrass Turkeys and think I am in love with those!!!

There a possability we may make it down to the chickenfest - all pending on work schedule & finding a babysitter for our feathered children. we could possably bring some hatching eggs if anyone interested in Iowa Blues, or mixes (we have an IaB roo & EE roo that could mix w/ EE, Americauna, RSL, or Chanticler hens). The Iowas are a rare breed, although not an officially recognized APA breed. They tend to mature quicker than some other breeds, & ours have seemed to hatch about a day earlier than others & seem to be very sturdy & great survivalist.
We have gotten all 4 colors so far out of our 2 hatches : Birchen, Smokey, Silver, & rare Charcoal color. pm for more info/interest. also theres a link to the IBCC website in my sig - lots of great info, history, & photos there.

The last two look like Isbar pullets to me, but all of mine are blue so I'm not 100% sure.
The three pictures are of the same chick. It has feathers on its feet so I don't think that it is an Isbar, at least none of the Isbars that I have, have feathers on their feet and legs. I appreciate your input and I am really happy to hear that you think it is a pullet
