INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well, I've been absent and have had a weeks worth of catching up to do. Finally caught up. :) Hopefully...

It looks like everyone had fun at the Chickenfest. I'm so sad I missed it. We got busy and completely forgot! :/ Oh well, there is always next year and by then I can drive myself! :D

I saw some really cute pics of chicks and goats and cows and.....Kangaroos? And other exotic animals I can't spell right?! Love it! Their adorable! Somebody has their own personal zoo goin' on!

So, my county's fair was fun, my friends entered their rabbits and lol, the younger sister showed her older sisters rabbits and won while her sister well, she didn't win with her bunnies. However, they both 'borrowed' a cow to show, I don't know who from, some small farm they loan the cows out to 4hers. They did well and won but can't go to state because the people who own the cows don't go to state? Odd right?

Anyway the chicken shows disappointed me. Only four birds their truly looked good. Two white silkies, and two polish. One was frizzled!! The rest were your basic hatchery, farm store birds. And what got me was that the manual even says you can not enter a bird unless its a purebred. Yet I saw Golden comets and Production reds and black sex links. So I don't know what's up with that but there were also less birds it seemed. I'M disappointed I couldn't show my birds :/ Ah well.

I'm down three birds too. Thursday the week before last I was gone all day. Wake up that Friday to find one of my Barred Rock Cockerel cowering against the door, outside the grow out pen. Nothing too bad, missing some feathers, a bit ruffled, he pulled out of it. However, I found that I only had 8, instead of 9. Then I found that I was missing Rocket, my RIR/Production Red and Ivory, my EE. The confusing part? Coops were closed and no bodies, no feathers. I found five feathers next to my dogs area but not enough to say my dog mauled the barred rock cockerel I am missing. Those are the only feathers I found and I looked all over! Anyone have ideas? My mom saw a fox far down the road coming to our house and a few nights ago I saw it as well but there is no way it could get into either coops so I'm stumped.

Go to the www.ISRBA.com website.  Breeders are listed for different breeds there.  ISRBA is the Indiana State Rabbit Breeders Assoc.  We are also ISRBA members.  Generally speaking (of course there are exceptions) those who choose to be part of ISRBA take their rabbit raising seriously and will have quality rabbits.  Some members raise rabbits purely for show, others also breed for meat.  I just looked at the list for Californians and personally know 2 of the breeders there and am familiar with the names of the other 3.  I would have no problem buying rabbits from any of them.  I also know 1 of the 2 New Zealand breeders listed and would trust them as well.  There are many other ISRBA breeders of those breeds as well; the ones on the website are the ones who have paid to be publicly listed on the website.  Another idea would be to visit the State Fair this weekend when the youth have their rabbits there or Saturday, August 16 for the open show and find the Cali and New Zealand people there & talk to them.

I think I'll do both- contact via the website, and try to meet them at the fair, if possible. Thank you for the link; somehow they never came up in my searches!

Tippecanoe county? I know their rent a cow program! ;) I think there's someone in Boone county that does it too.

Mmhm...nope. I'm in Crawfordsville. Its not that far from were I'm at so its still in the area. Maybe I'll ask my mom or sister where its at. I only went there, to the little farm place once to pick up my sister who went with them to take care of the pretty critters.

Oh yeah, another bit of news from the farm here, we got three new kittens! Our cat had three little calicoes! The dad was a new stray brown tabby who showed up. Soda, the mother, is white with orange tabby spots. They are so adorable and tumble around everywhere. The birthing process was also very interesting to watch. I'll have to get pics of the cats and my chicks up soon. My five(I think) cockerels are getting their tail and sickle feathers in. I've seen several flare ups and stare downs going on lately but nothing major.

Just wanted to share a couple of shots of my girls! I got a brand new Canon EOS camera and snapped a few pics last night. I made the mistake of going out with the big lens (that people with unfriendly animals would need to shoot pics from far away lol) and had a lot of trouble getting glamor shots of all the girls crowding around my feet.

EE from RacinChickins :)

Beardless EE from RacinChickins :)

Ugga - Birchen Marans from Brad (her sister PeeWee has better birchen markings but she is in the klink getting over her broodiness)

The perfect canine - Izzy - Dachshund

Second perfect canine aka Sami SoSo- she is a Lusky (Lab/Husky)

"No No Bad Dog" aka Maya, Cattle Dog Lab Mix

Slightly less bad dog - Gus - Dachshund/Pekinese/Chi (the poo poo platter)

It also looks like I have another girl with bumble foot so I will get to try my Tricide-Neo and Preparation H treatment this week. Yep, totally walked into the pharmacy to buy Hemorrhoid cream for my chicken. I am that cool.

LOL you would be surprised! They are LUCKY they are cute!!!! It is all that they have going for them some days! Small bad bit a kid last week (he was a rescue so I don't know what his background was, but methinks he is not going to be safe around kids) and big bad keeps shredding the lattice under my deck to try to slaughter bunnies. LOL they are pretty rotten.

Lol, my grandparents say the same thing about me! Aw. That doesn't sound good. :/ Poor dogs, poor kid, poor bunnies. They do indeed sound rotten. But you love 'em anyway huh? Lol. They all look very precious though.

Okay--I need to practice my confessing before I get home from work today.

Admittedly, we have the perfect number of hens.

Back story:
I got a silkie chick to try to break a broody hen--that didn't work--the hen stayed broody and hated the chick
so then I raised it in the spare bathroom, much to DW's dismay--
THEN the silkie chick needed a buddy since silkies typically sleep on the floor...following me?

Flash to the present...broody hen still broody...Two too many, now.

At lunch time today at work, I bought hatching eggs. OMGoodness--I'm going to be in deep trouble when I get home...I only ordered TWO eggs, hoping to get a 50% hatch from the shipped eggs.

In about a month, I may be looking for a forever home for a Coronation Sussex chick...if DW doesn't get in cahoots with the mailman and have him lose the eggs before they arrive.
