INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Off to change some things on my profile and then to bed I go. Nite all

Off to bed to sleep off a crummy night. Lost 2 birds to either a coon or a coyote. I got outside in time to find one. She had a broken neck and died in my arms. I feel like I failed them. I know those of us that choose to free range always run this risk, but it just stinks when we're reminded of it. This is my first predator loss in over a year... Boo on naturre.
Quinstar~ I am so sorry to hear that.

Very sad.
IMO, I think the benefits of free ranging outweigh the risks. You gave them a much better life than most chickens have, but I know it hurts to lose them.

@Momma 2 silkies I love the pretty silver partridge color!

@granny hatchet ~ Hope you find your sweet doggie. We're glad you let us know, and please join us anytime.
chick rookie ~ Enjoyed all your photos! Wonderful animals.

Wow. That chicken patio area sounds very nice. Totally understand being busy. :)

I also have a hen and a pulet that are the opposite in colors and love them as well. I am going to put them with my black roo to see what they produce and later try them with my paint roo.

Pullet above and my her mom below. I have new roosters this year so I don't know if I will get more of either colors this year.

Sorry a repeat reply... lol still love them.

Bonbon (my avatar) started out being broody in a nesting box and things were fine for a week. Then my BR decided she wanted to use the box Bonbon was in, and the scuffle resulted in a broken hatching egg. I put Bonbon in a small converted rabbit hutch coop, but if your broody doesn't want to move-- you and CCCHICKENS have good ideas to make a chicken wire or screen cover. I tried to think of ideas using something you may have or using inexpensive solutions and then I decided to show photos. That's one reason I am behind on the thread . . . something will interest me and I decide to brainstorm and research for fun, and the next thing I know, it's late.

That led to . . .

INTERESTING SITE ~ Materials and Ideas that can be used for Poultry & other Livestock
Shade and Wind screen fabric, Drainage Solutions, Recycling, etc.
This doesn't look like a "bargain" site (and the graphic design of their site is terrible), but it has lots of materials and interesting ideas that may inspire our inventive, creative, and resourceful thread members.
The Natural Home Building Source

Definitely a site for @racinchickins if he hasn't seen it already.

This is the section I looked at about netting. It reminded me of members' discussions about the need for shaded areas and for wind protection. It shows photos of different ways to use fabric in panels or attaching it to existing fencing. It comes in a range of weave densities.

Lots of great Ideals, I have to get some bird netting to keep my chickens out of a tree.

Oh my, I am so saddened to read this. I hope you mend quickly and I am so sorry for your loss. Stray dogs are the owners fault. That owner owes you for the loss of your birds. and IMO your medical bills due to his irresponsible behavior! I would be calling that officers' police chief demanding an explaination.
Thanks and I got it all straighten out, the cops included!

Fantastic! I finally have a NN (turken hen) laying, NICE sized dark brown egg. I think I want more turkens!

LOL please talk LGD all you want, I love to hear about them! I really want to add a Pyraneese, they seem most likely to fit what we keep here. Have honestly considered another Rottweiller too. Collies really interest me also.. but a short coated.. so many choices and no time for a puppy right now.

UGH, yep, all green. I planted beefsteak and roma. My squash, corn, snap peas, cukes are doing great, already getting pumpkin... some melons. FYI geese and ducks think they like watermelon plants more than me

I am so glad she is ok!
The Collies and Aussies aren't really any good against predators but keep a good eye on the stock and for herding, If you want predator protection the LGD's are the best. And if it is coyotes you have the most trouble with you need at least 2 LGD's raised together so they can work as a team, ! LGD with put up a good fight but in the end a pack will overcome it and it will lose. and you want to raise them with the stock you want protected. Thats not to say you cant let them in the house, or you cant have them as pets ( as some will tell ya ) mine are house dogs during the day ( too hot in the daytime summer months heat stroke can happen really fast ) and then the guys go outside with the goats at night. I have great resualts this way, they protect my family and my critters.

@ChickCrazed As long as you are able to get those hard kernels and the pus around them out of both feet, and continue to keep them clean and bandaged long enough to heal completely after the infection is gone, that's what counts! The foot soak probably helped it burst, which is essential, whether by medical or surgical means. Hopefully she will be as good as new soon. You could also pack the foot with a triple antibiotic ointment and wrap it in between soaks to speed things along. You can pick that up anywhere--pharmacy, Wal-Mart, Target, etc., just use the human stuff.
I use the human stuff on all my critters boo boo's always have. Works great with no problems.

One of the 6 piglets. They are so cute (and active!)

Help Needed Please ~ Attacked or Self-Inflicted Wound?

I noticed that my 2 year old EE hen, Roadrunner, had a bloody wound on the side of her head this morning. I let them out extra early, so I couldn't figure out why she possibly was attacked by another hen. Plus, none of the other hens have ever attacked another one before. I finally got ahold of her, washed the area with Dawn and warm water, rinsed, and applied Rooster Booster no-peck stuff. The wound appeared to be around her ear area. I noticed she had bloody claws as though she did it to herself, so I'm wondering if she was itching her ear. When I looked up mites, etc., I didn't find anything specific about ear mites. Otherwise, she looks and acts fine.

Has anyone had this type of experience or knows what to do? Thank you!
I don't have a clue, wish I did, I just wanted to say good luck and hope she heals fast.

i need to re-home 5 of my laying hens to comply with my city ordinance and I was hoping some nice person on here could give them a great home. the hens are a Easter egger,2 golden laced wynadotte, a black australorp and a Rhode island red. I am located in Central Indiana and would not be able to deliver them too far. I have a home for 2 hens if there isn't anyone who can take all 5, but I would really prefer to keep them together if it's possible. If someone is able to take 3 please let me know that as well. I have to have them moved from my property by Friday. Thank you all.

@Quinstar = Sorry for your loss, I agree that the benefits of free ranging out way the risk, and the chickens are so much happier then being cooped up in a run or a cage, at least mine are, as long as I can free range I will. Just saying. ( and why did my type change colors? )

Thanks I have some awesome critters if I do say so myself.. lol

Greeting, chicken friends!

Hope everyone is doing well. I have three kids back to school, one to go...in a few weeks. Starting to regain a little bit of sanity. PT for my shoulder/arm is helpful, I think. Time will tell.

My chickens are doing great! My daughter is pretty needy with them and they are scared of her. I'm trying to teach her that they don't want to be chased and picked up all the time. Keep telling hubby we really need a *kitten* for her to love on. He doesn't think we need another animal to care for, but I am of the mind that if one just MAGICALLY shows up, we would keep it, it would just have to live outside.

In chicken news...not much news, actually. We are still working on our run. It's kind of ridiculous at this point.
tongue2.gif
All the chooks are doing good. Farrah has turned quite pretty. She has gotten more black splashes so that now she is white with black spots all over. Lynda is a lovely blue. Still not sure if she is going to be Lenny or stay Lynda!

OH! On that front, my guineas are now Thelma and LOUIE. Louie started barking yesterday. He also bosses the rooster around. No surprise that the guineas have already far outgrown the chickens.

The bantams are all just so cute. I'm so glad we got bantams. If we had all LF I think they would have been crowded in the coop. As it is, I think they are just right.

The guineas fly a little. Tried to fly into one of our windows.

Flew onto the roof our living room. Haven't made it into the trees yet, though.

That's all the news from me, I guess. Saw the pics from ChickenFest, wish I had been there.

Which reminds me...saw this book. Would you read a book like this, or have you read this one?

Looks cute to me.
