INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Chicken life is such a joy. Noticing a new layer is always awesome, seeing a new egg color in the boxes never gets old.

I have had green eggs coming from 3-4 EE's and I have (im)patiently waiting
pop.gif
on my brown egg girls to catch up. And I always hear that EE's are slower to start laying. Two years in a row I have proven that wrong.

My free-rangers have been down in the creek finding frogs and craw-dads all summer and have finally figured out the way to the driveway/mid-area yard. They have been cleaning up after the insane amount of cardinals, blue-jays, and finches and the bird seed and BOSS on the ground (as if they don't get enough already...)

I feel like I am being followed every time I leave their yard.

And last, my Aussie Roxy has been watching a lot of hunting shows with my DF. She plops down on the couch and stares intently at the deer and bears. My DM sends me this the other day:

The couch is apparently too far away. And if it's a really good scene, her paws are up on the tv stand. So I bought her a camo bandana to wear while she's "hunting."

And she really enjoyed coming to Chickenfest! Poor pup was exhausted after that trip and slept for a good while once we got home.

So while I'm catching up I decided I would give an update on my 'Disappearing Chicken Mystery'case here on the little farm. I'm now missing a grand total of 4 birds. Two of my two and a half/ three month old chicks and two of my laying hens. I'm very annoyed its frustrating, there is literally nothing to show they were carted off to be made into a chicken dinner or anything! No feathers, no blood, no nothin'! I'm tempted to stay up tonight of some time to see who's stealing my birds. I'm honestly starting to suspect humans as the culprits. But it seems pretty petty to walk across a field of beans to grab a squaking bird (or two), get attacked by a mean rooster and then walk back across a bean field carrying said birds.

Lol, I don't know whether to laugh or cry in frustration. I mean I'm very upset about my birds. The chicks more so because honestly I was near the point of purging my laying flock since the eggs have started to dwindle in number but still my birds are my birds and its my responsibility to care for them which includes getting rid of threats to them and their wellbeing.

Anyway, Other than this trying issue I'm pumped for this week. Our church is doing our yearly Cowboy Camp and I'm helping with the horses. Its so fun and the kids are so enjoyable.

Oh, also, Saturday I spent several hours in a Vet camp hosted by Purdue at the State fair and it was very, very enjoyable! My uncle was awesome enough to 'pay my way' for the event and it was well worth it. The State fair was a big bonus too and I saw a gorgeous chicken shed that was amazing. My dad teased me when I pointed out several other little buildings and such at the Pioneer village area, saying that 'Anything and everything looks like a chicken coop to me' but its true I was suddenly hit with the brilliant idea that when/if I get Welsummers I should make a coop designed to look like a Windmill, like the ones found in Welsum. My dad said it was somewhat impractical so I've decided to write a report on how coops can be both eye catching in cool designs and such but also practical. :D

That's enough from me now but that's what's been happening on my end. :) I hope everyone else is doing well? And if I've missed any new comers' Welcome!

I need help trying to figure out what kind of rooster Cragen is
barnie.gif
. My dad gave him to me because he was told it was a pullet, but figured out it wasn't. He was told it was a welsummer, but compared to my welsummer roo Elliot, he is missing a lot of color. I'm thinking maybe he is a Rhode Island red, but not sure. If he is a Welsummer I will be selling him because he is defiantly not anywhere near the standard, but if he is a Rhode Island Red I can put him with my RIR girls, any comments would be great. He did come from Orshlen's, so more than likely hatchery stock, but can they really be that off......

This is my Elliot

This is Elliot and Cragen together

This is Cragen

My DH and DS's are almost done with the breeding pens, there are going to be 4, can't wait!!!!
