I am so sorry. Its hard to make the choice, but they live happy lives having the freedom.
Its a personal decision, and I wouldn't have it any other way either.
Great news! And yes they get bigger. Are you sure she isn't just not mature yet, what breed is she?
I sooo love your splash! Looks like the birds did well. Feeder looks great!!
FROSTY has been found ! thanks to a wonderful community that shared and shared til she was found. a very special shout out to ol gray mare for all her help.
A word about Suffering Spouses, Significant Others, Partners, etc. At Chickenfest, my DH joked about starting a Support Group for Spouses, Significant Others, Partners, etc. whose lives are overshadowed by the joy that chickens bring to the enlightened ones like us-- our thread members. He implied that I find chickens much more enthralling than he does and acted like a dutiful DH by attending Chickenfest. Well, I knew all along that his protests are just for show. He doesn't want to admit that he's almost as crazy about the chickens as I am. When my Silkie Ditzy went missing, he was outside with a flashlight looking for her longer than I was. The next morning, he got up at dawn to look for her, and found her farther away than I'd imagine she'd ever be. I could tell you all kinds of stories like how he'd let Bonbon and her chicks come in the house for daily special treats, and so on. And some people think that chickens act silly!
X2 BIG CONGRATS!!!
Oh my, he had my DH laughing a week after! I love his sense of humor.
And YES, absolutely Tony deserved a HUGE
Quote: I have a few families and friends that only want quail eggs. Its interesting on how many different preferences people have and cool ideas too. My neighbor only likes duck eggs, and can't wait for the next dozen.
amwchickin ~ Haha That's fun! Our Germania Maennerchor Volksfest begins later this week.
@hanakimi So sorry to hear about your ordinance forcing you to rehome 5 hens. Hope you don't have too many bees in one hive!
@leslea ~ It sounds like things have settled down with your allergy issues, and your poultry is part of the family. That's great that you have a variety of breeds and sizes. I don't know much about guineas, but beware of a roo around small children.
Bantams are cute, but I ended up with two roos from Bonbon's hatch, and they've been fighting--not just the usual chest bumping, but strange stare-offs and holding on to each other with their beaks. I need to get a video because it's bizarre to see two miniature roosters fighting so intensely. They get so focused on each other that I can grab one in each hand when normally I can't catch them. CRSelvey will be taking one soon.
Re your marketing survey
I'd probably read "The Hen of Baskerville." I just started this book:
Quote: Thats so true. At the end of the day, my lil pug mix Sadie is always happy its her turn with mom. And I am really grateful to have her to cuddle!
@jchny2000 I'm praying for you and your father tonight as well as the rest of your family. I hope he improves.
I'm sure there are others on here as well thinking of you and your family.
Took the children out to see a 50 minute play of Mulan today. All of them were quiet and well behaved. I was very impressed. And my two oldest really seamed to enjoy it. Art on their level it was a great time.
Thank you, he is doing so much better! Lots of laughs and joking today, he sure has a positive attitude. Wants to be home terribly.
Thats fantastic that the children were able to enjoy it, so important they get the chance to appreciate fine arts.
I need some broody advice. I've got aboard that's been broody for about a week. I got some eggs to put under her and tried to move her to her own space but she freaked out and wouldn't sit on the new nest
I don't mind leaving her in the main coop, it'll give me a reason to get the rest of my nest boxes built, BUT she likes to play musical boxes. What would you all do?
Raining here again!!! The chickens are braving it though, they are all soggy messes.
I wanted to share how my treatment of my bumblefoot girl is going. The poor thing had it on both feet, one was about pea sized and the other slightly bigger. I couldn't bare the thought of doing the surgery with an awake chicken, so I researched alternative treatments and wanted to let you all know about it.
After finding a thread on BYC about it, I purchased a Koi fish medication called Tricide-Neo from an online Koi supply store. It was around $20 for a packet that created a gallon of medication. You HAVE to use distilled water or the medication is inactivated. You use it as a foot soak. I am on day five of treatment, I have been soaking her in the evenings for 5 minutes, then putting preparation H on her infections and wrapping her feet in cotton and vetwrap. I couldn't really tell if it was working for the first few days, the infection seemed to be sticking out of her foot very slightly but other than that I couldn't tell. I decided to do an extra morning treatment over the weekend. Today it looked a bit more pronounced so I squeezed the bottom of her foot a bit and the kernal of infection started to pop out even more! I was able to squeeze both kernals out of her foot! I don't know if I got it all, but I got a fair amount out of both feet and at the very least the medication will be able to get into her foot better for her remaining treatments. I have been really impressed with this treatment and wanted to share it as a non-surgical option for you all.
Unfortunately I did not get pictures of it. I will track how long I actually need to treat before I deem it safe enough to stop. This probably involves a greater time investment than surgical options but I think it has been much more pleasant on both of us so it is worth the time for me.
Help Needed Please ~ Attacked or Self-Inflicted Wound?
I noticed that my 2 year old EE hen, Roadrunner, had a bloody wound on the side of her head this morning. I let them out extra early, so I couldn't figure out why she possibly was attacked by another hen. Plus, none of the other hens have ever attacked another one before. I finally got ahold of her, washed the area with Dawn and warm water, rinsed, and applied Rooster Booster no-peck stuff. The wound appeared to be around her ear area. I noticed she had bloody claws as though she did it to herself, so I'm wondering if she was itching her ear. When I looked up mites, etc., I didn't find anything specific about ear mites. Otherwise, she looks and acts fine.
Has anyone had this type of experience or knows what to do? Thank you!
Yes, sounds like a mite or fly attack... she may have scraped it open and biting flies are terrible this year. Poor girl! You did the right thing treating immediately.
i need to re-home 5 of my laying hens to comply with my city ordinance and I was hoping some nice person on here could give them a great home. the hens are a Easter egger,2 golden laced wynadotte, a black australorp and a Rhode island red. I am located in Central Indiana and would not be able to deliver them too far. I have a home for 2 hens if there isn't anyone who can take all 5, but I would really prefer to keep them together if it's possible. If someone is able to take 3 please let me know that as well. I have to have them moved from my property by Friday. Thank you all.
I am so sorry you are going through this! I have a family member facing the same issue, changing ordinances over there.
I sent you a PM if you aren't able to work it out.
Sounds sooooo fun! I love the traditions, most of the elders in our family spoke fluent german.
I am 70% some german too. My gramma Sophia (RIP) is my idol and I learned most everything poultry from her.
Hope everyone is doing well. I have three kids back to school, one to go...in a few weeks. Starting to regain a little bit of sanity. PT for my shoulder/arm is helpful, I think. Time will tell.
My chickens are doing great! My daughter is pretty needy with them and they are scared of her. I'm trying to teach her that they don't want to be chased and picked up all the time. Keep telling hubby we really need a *kitten* for her to love on. He doesn't think we need another animal to care for, but I am of the mind that if one just MAGICALLY shows up, we would keep it, it would just have to live outside.
In chicken news...not much news, actually. We are still working on our run. It's kind of ridiculous at this point.
All the chooks are doing good. Farrah has turned quite pretty. She has gotten more black splashes so that now she is white with black spots all over. Lynda is a lovely blue. Still not sure if she is going to be Lenny or stay Lynda!
OH! On that front, my guineas are now Thelma and LOUIE. Louie started barking yesterday. He also bosses the rooster around. No surprise that the guineas have already far outgrown the chickens.
The bantams are all just so cute. I'm so glad we got bantams. If we had all LF I think they would have been crowded in the coop. As it is, I think they are just right.
The guineas fly a little. Tried to fly into one of our windows.
Flew onto the roof our living room. Haven't made it into the trees yet, though.
That's all the news from me, I guess. Saw the pics from ChickenFest, wish I had been there.
Which reminds me...saw this book. Would you read a book like this, or have you read this one?
Interesting! Hope you feel better, and wow, am amazed how early the kids are starting school. Really kinda sad for them!
I love the guineas. Seems like after the first year or so, they don't fly as often and calm down a lot.
Chicken life is such a joy. Noticing a new layer is always awesome, seeing a new egg color in the boxes never gets old.
I have had green eggs coming from 3-4 EE's and I have (im)patiently waiting
on my brown egg girls to catch up. And I always hear that EE's are slower to start laying. Two years in a row I have proven that wrong.
My free-rangers have been down in the creek finding frogs and craw-dads all summer and have finally figured out the way to the driveway/mid-area yard. They have been cleaning up after the insane amount of cardinals, blue-jays, and finches and the bird seed and BOSS on the ground (as if they don't get enough already...)
I feel like I am being followed every time I leave their yard.
And last, my Aussie Roxy has been watching a lot of hunting shows with my DF. She plops down on the couch and stares intently at the deer and bears. My DM sends me this the other day:
The couch is apparently too far away. And if it's a really good scene, her paws are up on the tv stand. So I bought her a camo bandana to wear while she's "hunting."
And she really enjoyed coming to Chickenfest! Poor pup was exhausted after that trip and slept for a good while once we got home.
So while I'm catching up I decided I would give an update on my 'Disappearing Chicken Mystery'case here on the little farm. I'm now missing a grand total of 4 birds. Two of my two and a half/ three month old chicks and two of my laying hens. I'm very annoyed its frustrating, there is literally nothing to show they were carted off to be made into a chicken dinner or anything! No feathers, no blood, no nothin'! I'm tempted to stay up tonight of some time to see who's stealing my birds. I'm honestly starting to suspect humans as the culprits. But it seems pretty petty to walk across a field of beans to grab a squaking bird (or two), get attacked by a mean rooster and then walk back across a bean field carrying said birds.
Lol, I don't know whether to laugh or cry in frustration. I mean I'm very upset about my birds. The chicks more so because honestly I was near the point of purging my laying flock since the eggs have started to dwindle in number but still my birds are my birds and its my responsibility to care for them which includes getting rid of threats to them and their wellbeing.
Anyway, Other than this trying issue I'm pumped for this week. Our church is doing our yearly Cowboy Camp and I'm helping with the horses. Its so fun and the kids are so enjoyable.
Oh, also, Saturday I spent several hours in a Vet camp hosted by Purdue at the State fair and it was very, very enjoyable! My uncle was awesome enough to 'pay my way' for the event and it was well worth it. The State fair was a big bonus too and I saw a gorgeous chicken shed that was amazing. My dad teased me when I pointed out several other little buildings and such at the Pioneer village area, saying that 'Anything and everything looks like a chicken coop to me' but its true I was suddenly hit with the brilliant idea that when/if I get Welsummers I should make a coop designed to look like a Windmill, like the ones found in Welsum. My dad said it was somewhat impractical so I've decided to write a report on how coops can be both eye catching in cool designs and such but also practical.
That's enough from me now but that's what's been happening on my end.
I hope everyone else is doing well? And if I've missed any new comers' Welcome!
I need help trying to figure out what kind of rooster Cragen is
. My dad gave him to me because he was told it was a pullet, but figured out it wasn't. He was told it was a welsummer, but compared to my welsummer roo Elliot, he is missing a lot of color. I'm thinking maybe he is a Rhode Island red, but not sure. If he is a Welsummer I will be selling him because he is defiantly not anywhere near the standard, but if he is a Rhode Island Red I can put him with my RIR girls, any comments would be great. He did come from Orshlen's, so more than likely hatchery stock, but can they really be that off......
My DH and DS's are almost done with the breeding pens, there are going to be 4, can't wait!!!!
By the way, is anyone on here going to the poultry show Labor Day weekend in Spencer? I am looking to start buying better quality birds than what I have and would love to meet some of you.
Check this out!!!!!! Remember a few post back I had a hen with broke legs and I didnt know if I should cull her or not cause she didnt seem to be getting better??????
Well....................................................
Well this is Baby girl, and honey following behind ...
She kept walking back and forth in front of her hospital ... Honey just didn't get it... I'm so happy
