INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@granny hatchet ~ What wonderful news about finding your dog! And--- Way to Go @Ol Grey Mare
I need help trying to figure out what kind of rooster Cragen is. My dad gave him to me because he was told it was a pullet, but figured out it wasn't. He was told it was a welsummer, but compared to my welsummer roo Elliot, he is missing a lot of color. I'm thinking maybe he is a Rhode Island red, but not sure.

This is Cragen
chickiebaby ~ Of first flock ever-- 6 RIRs from RK, 5 were cockerels, and they looked a lot like your Cragen.

chick rookie ~ That's amazing news about your hen that can walk again! You take such great care of your animals.

Whenever my kids had earaches they pulled on their ears all th time, seems t me that this is the chicken equivalent. I know this all sounds odd but maybe it would help?

Minminme ~ Thanks so much for your suggestions! When I have an injured chicken, my mind starts spinning and then I worry about doing the wrong thing to make matters worse. I was wondering about what I could do to prevent her from clawing her wound, and you have great ideas. I just posted that she wasn't clawing herself today, so I'm hoping she'll continue to heal because it was disturbing to see her add to her injury.

Just saw this . . .

Yes, sounds like a mite or fly attack... she may have scraped it open and biting flies are terrible this year. Poor girl! You did the right thing treating immediately.

Hmmm ~ That's a possibility . . . I'll have to see how she's doing tomorrow. Maybe I should have my vet look at it.
@raisinemright You sure do get a lot accomplished! Whether it's a built-from-scratch coop or a kit, it's done in no time. I'm guessing your back is doing better?

Great news! And yes they get bigger. Are you sure she isn't just not mature yet, what breed is she?
No, she was a black orp, about a year and a half. Her sister lays 5 to 7 days in a row, then 1 or 2 off. I think these birds were bred for appearance, not laying ability. The processing went really well. I kind of thought maybe I'd done something wrong, because it was really easy... but there's nothing left on her that you wouldn't find on a grocery store bird, so I think I'm good! I'm looking forward to crocking my first tough old hen.

I saw this article in the Star yesterday. Is this anyone we know?

I"ll be at the State Fair the 8th. I don't have a BYC shirt, more's the pity. But I do have a straw hat newly adorned with black orp feathers. And I'll be the one in the Luau shirt. I hope to meet a few of you there!

I'm thinking maybe he is a Rhode Island red, but not sure. If he is a Welsummer I will be selling him because he is defiantly not anywhere near the standard, but if he is a Rhode Island Red I can put him with my RIR girls, any comments would be great. He did come from Orshlen's, so more than likely hatchery stock, but can they really be that off......

Well I was going to give you another example of a Welly but I just found that 13 folders of pic's have been deleted some how!!!!!!

Interesting! Hope you feel better, and wow, am amazed how early the kids are starting school. Really kinda sad for them!
I love the guineas. Seems like after the first year or so, they don't fly as often and calm down a lot.
She was too SWEET! I wish I had one just like her. My EEs are all over the board on laying, and like to hide the eggs too LOL.
my new hens are hiding eggs on me as well, kinda tired of hunting eggs.....
The missing mystery makes me think fox. Rarely any feathers.. personal experience. I am so sorry for your losses.

Fair sounds like an awesome time for you!! I hope our family can make it.
Fox would make sense

He may be a welly but poorly colored, I don't have any, hope another member can help.
I think he is very handsome, myself!
Awesome build! Looks like its going up fast! I hope to at least make state fair, not looking hopeful right now.

OH MY! WTG!!!
Thanks
Thanks for posting, I hope to be going!

I want to thank you guys, I really think you are the ones that saved my baby Girl hen and made it possible for her to walk again, When I was asking ya'll about her some of you said Vit Deff. It got me to thinking, when she broke her first leg she was real young, what if in her bodies attempt to heal itself it was taking everything it had, So I started pumping extra Vit. and mixing Starter grower in with all her feed and crushed egg shells. 4 days latter she stood up!!!! She is shaky but I think that is from her muscles being all out of shape from not being used.
So A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

amwchickin ~ Haha That's fun! Our Germania Maennerchor Volksfest begins later this week.
@hanakimi So sorry to hear about your ordinance forcing you to rehome 5 hens. Hope you don't have too many bees in one hive!

@leslea ~ It sounds like things have settled down with your allergy issues, and your poultry is part of the family. That's great that you have a variety of breeds and sizes. I don't know much about guineas, but beware of a roo around small children.

Bantams are cute, but I ended up with two roos from Bonbon's hatch, and they've been fighting--not just the usual chest bumping, but strange stare-offs and holding on to each other with their beaks. I need to get a video because it's bizarre to see two miniature roosters fighting so intensely. They get so focused on each other that I can grab one in each hand when normally I can't catch them. CRSelvey will be taking one soon.

Re your marketing survey

I'd probably read "The Hen of Baskerville." I just started this book:
Yes, moving the birds outside was the thing! Such a relief.

I bet it is stressful watching BonBon's babies spar. Is that sparring, you think? With the beaks?

So far Otis is very docile for a young roo. I am pretty amazed none of us have been pecked very much by any of the birds!

And DH has agreed to get some kitties so little bits can have an outdoor pet that won't mind being carried around quite as much as the silkies! (Not that the silkies complain, but I fear it stresses them unduly and she might hurt their little legs/feet with the stress of letting them go). I wanted to get her a kitten today but we will have to wait until after our next trip. First trip in years. Still trying to nail down who will feed the birds while we're gone.

To that end, it was time to buy a bigger feeder/water, so we upgraded. I don't think we will try to build a pvc feeder at this time. Maybe in the future. For now we have the old-fashioned hanging ones, and with as little/much as these birds eat, it will be interesting to see how fast they go through it!

Yes, you caught me...totally a marketing survey!

The whole series looks really cute, and they're all bird-themed, so you know that is right up my alley! @EurekaChic, thanks for weighing in. M2H, I am so behind in my writing goals for the year, the last thing I need is to find another project...but that idea of a chicken sleuth series is still with me.

How is Buddy?

The next time I host book club, I should fill the choices with chicken books...

What are the best days to go to the State Fair to see chickens? We went last year, but must have missed out, because it was Rabbit time. It was cool to see all the different kinds of rabbits, but I was bummed to miss the chickens and other poultry.

Poultry is to be entered and penned on the 5th by 7 pm (showmanship is at 2, so I would imagine most will be there well before the cutoff time for penning) and released on the 9th between 6 and 9 p.m. so it would seem the 6,7 or 8th would be your best days to see poultry
