INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Huffington Post has a great article called We Just Found Your New Pet: It's a Chicken. And it features all images of silkies! This is so neat that people are getting into chickens, especially silkies.

atrueb00~ Thanks for posting that link! I've never seen one like the rooster with the disturbing looking fluffy legs.
My two silkies have looked like this photo the past couple of rainy days.

From what I recall, having backyard chickens became popular around 10 years ago, and the continued interest is a good testament that backyard chickens are here to stay

-- except when new zoning laws forbid them.

OOOOHHhhhhhhhh. I didn't expect them to be with the bantams. I thought silkies were LF.

Tiny chickens give me the willies. I'm not kidding. I couldn't walk the bantam isle without squealing like a little girl, and I'm too old and fat for that to be cute.
hoosierchicken ~ hahahahaha
The longer you have chickens, the more used to unusual breeds you'll become. I originally liked barnyard types that looked like chickens are supposed to look. Then, I became more intrigued, and I love my overly fluffy imported English orpingtons and my funny, fuzzy silkies. My OEGB Wheaton roo and my Belgian Mille Fleur roo are both smaller than my silkies. Miniature roosters are very interesting-- so tiny, but they have occasional intense battles. By intense, I mean that they get so close and stare in each other's eyes fiercely like some kind of martial arts exhibition.

I just saw your other post asking how silkies see. I recently posted that we trimmed my two silkies' feathers around their eyes so they can see better, and it made a big difference. They're much more active and interactive.

One thing that people always say about bantams, and I can confirm, is that they don't realize they're bantams. They act as though they're the same size as the LFs. I guess that's how they've survived-- they are self-assured!

Quote: I have a tiny OEGB hen that will attack a LF roo in a heartbeat. Victoria is so fast, she will run them off! I do not "let" mine free range, but she is a pistol. If she gets out, she will go after the roosters.

Quote: Oh I love the large birds!!

Quote: They are very sweet birds. She will love them.

Quote: Agreed! The roos are very good to their girls.

Quote: I trim crests. I don't show, so am not as concerned about the appearances. If one does get out, I do not want to risk them not seeing a predator.

Quote: They are lovely birds! My Lila is one of Brads, and I just love her. Nice XL brown egg every day.

Would anyone be interested in 2 bantam ee hens? They are about a year and a half old. I don't have a rooster to go with them and I need the run space. I am asking 30 for the pair of them. If interested, send me a message. I need to rehome them soon. They both lay egg colored eggs.

What lil cuties! I bet they rehome FAST!

Something to ponder...
actually 2 things! We are looking for more contributors. I would like to find someone to work on the member/event/links article for our thread. We are all volunteers that have built our thread, and we have an awesome group of contributors that brainstorm all the time.

www.backyardchickens.com/a/indiana-bycers-members-events-links

Want it to be more user friendly, and clean up some. This could be the page to go to for Tshirts, annual events, and announcements for our members. That's the purpose of it now, but I think it could be better laid out and improved. So, if anyone is interested, please PM me. We can always use more help to keep our thread going STRONG!

Nice article - thanks for the link. The rooster in the pic sure looks like Chewbacca or something else from outer space! Definitely chickens as pets are catching on. A few weeks ago my DH and I saw one of those shows on HGTV where a team (brothers, actually) comes in and helps you fix up your home so you can sell it, and the owner of the house had a pet silkie hen that was always sitting on her shoulder while they filmed her. It was pretty cute (although I worried about it being a lone chicken - aren't chickens happier in groups?).

Well finally back from the fair! I entered a chicken wrong an ended up bringing one back home. Oh well, life goes on. I did this project interact where you pretty much sit at a table with a chicken and people can pet them and ask you questions. You don't have the slightest idea how many little kids asked me if my splash Ameraucana was an owl lol

I can tell ya our milk makes the best ice cream I've ever had lol!! True story
very true story

FOUND IN INDIANAPOLIS: STRAY ROOSTER

On the Northwest side of Indianapolis, this rooster just randomly showed up at my buddy's in-law's house near 62nd and Lafayette Rd.

Does anybody recognize him, or want him for any reason?
poor boy hope he finds a home

I found out what was causing bumblefoot in my flock.

I used to use one of the ramps with the cross-boards as a walk up to the chicken house. I began to notice that they would slide on it almost always and were getting damaged foot pads from the ramp!!!!!

So..
We had lots of old wood that needs to be burned (just light-weight, old junk logs not suitable for burning for heat). So I use them setting upright to make steps. They are wonderful. They stride right up and down them easily and no more sliding. And no more feet getting bruised or hurt.

You can see the logs here. Even the chicks can use them easily hopping from one to another.

You
great ideal

So I figured out how to use my DH's screw gun and I almost finished my brooder box. I am going to have my husband make a hinged roof for easier opening and to make sure they are more secure, but at least now I can have my bathroom back, we have had chicks in the bathtub since March. I DO NOT like sharing my bathroom with my teenage sons. Had to get this done!

Done except for roof

With makeshift roof (till permanent one is done)

Inside pic of the other side. I made a little roost bar for the older chicks.

I have to say I can't believe I did this and all by myself. I really like it because it can be made into at least 4 compartments if need be. Like different chick ages and also if I ever get a broody, now she can go in here.

This is my grow out pen
great job, wish I was that handy, and I love the playhouse/coop

I see here that you have Ameraucana's. I was sold several chickens a few months ago that the person said they were Ameraucanas and I would really like your opinion. I thought a few looked just like easter eggers, but the rest look like a lot of the birds I have seen at the fairs recently with the Ameraucana tag. Here are a few pics let me know what you think. Thanks

look l8ike EE's to me too but I'm far from an expert.

Just took some photos of the SFH kiddos that are 13 weeks old now. SHF are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to end up with and they change from month to month until they reach their adult plumage.

Black w/band in front. She has more brown than the other black.

Here they are as little ones.

Black without band.

"Brown" (She still has snake eyes.)

Brown as a little one (kytinpusher's photo at hatch)

This is Emma. She's 1.5 yo. I think "brown" will end up looking much like Emma.
I like!! Very pretty..

First night out of the nesting coop after their move to our new place and they all are making their way back into the roost!!

And this is our trip to the feed mill! Ouch

Our animals starve lol
lol looks like our garage, We store in 55 gal barrels keeps the mice out.. and dang coons ect,,,,,

Here is the de wormer we are now using. Yes it says sheep but it also works for goats, per the vet you must double the dosage per body weight.
what is the name of that? I cant read it. Can you get it OTC or vet only?

Chickens are the Gateway Drug!

Thanks for the PR about BYC Indiana!

Now the bad news. As some or most of you know, Mt. Healthy hatchery has a salmonella problem for the third year in a row. They sell to Tractor Supply and other retailers. These are human strains. No deaths, but lots of people landing in the hospital. The cdc.gov page has lots of good info. I just don't understand why this has not been eradicated.

@kittydoc ~ Thank you for posting the salmonella information! I agree with @hoosierchicken that Mt. Healthy is an ironic name.
I read some of the cdc info. It also mentioned the importance of hand washing, and not allowing children to kiss/cuddle chickens -- it's so easy for young children to wipe their eyes, nose, or mouth while they're cuddling/playing with a chicken -- way before a parent says, "It's time to wash your hands."

Btw, it's dangerous to mention "English Orpingtons" in my presence. Can't wait to hear about your hatch!

@chickiebaby1
I'm impressed with your brooder box!
smile.png
And your little washable house/grow out pen. Btw, when I've used that type of brooder light, I've found that they easily come apart, so I made this pictorial last spring when there were so many members using clamp lamps for brooders. Just passing this info along.

ya know I have looked for the ceramic heaters like that but cant find them. Who sells them, our RK or TSC never have them. and they can screw into any standard light socket right?

I was flipping through my phone last night, and came across some pictures I took at the Cher concert in Indianapolis, recently. If any of you went to the event, you'll likely agree it was a great concert. Her many outfit changes are a fun part of the show.
I snapped this pic of the singer, Cher, in a headdress, as she was walking away. Looks a lot like the recent pic of our sizzle, Cher, don't you think?

Poor chicken... Sorry I dont like her. ( the human )

Oh she will. Trust me my younger AMs are spoiled brats. One day I ran out of all flock, which is all they have are since they were like 9 weeks old. So I thought I have some craked corn on Hand I will jut feed that until I get to the feed mill or the farm store. They wouldn't eat it.
No one even looks at your chickens when you sign in. You just have to have your NPIP testing paper. They say any sik looking birds or birds with external parasites will be asked to leave. Don't know how they enforce that if they don't even look at them. Maybe they do after they close barn, but that is too long, too late in my opinion.

Yes check in ended on Tuesday.

I know you are missing AOB (all other breed), most shoes have is AOSB (all other standard breed), but state fair doesn't. I think you got all the classes besides that one. I don't know if commercial is a class or not lol, I only show exhibition birds.

I scratched a buff laced polish. Her crest was messed up. Mostly because she dunks her head in the water all the time! After I got polish the first time. I said I would never get them again. Then when I was at Lebanon and bought one. Now I remember why I said I wouldn't buy anymore. But my mom loves her. And I think tolbunt look cool so now I find myself wanting to add more of them lol.

I think there is more competition in bantams.

BTW I feel like I can't sleep if I am not caught up on BYC lol
I don't show but I do agree... once they are in the barn with the other is too late .......

I got behind in last couple days but wanted t share these pics. Lol Pickles is definitely settling in well...wouldn't u say? Lol

I bright her in t chk her feet. She's all healed up!!! Yay!
love Pickles.. so pretty. and I love the name too...

I will post pic later and list how my other chickens placed, but I won champion American with my white rock.
Congrats!!!!!!

We had our first Black Orpington today. She was delicious!

We got a few double-yolk eggs last week. What happens if they're fertilized and set to try to hatch?
You aint right... lol

Some of our alpacas and fleece

Also, Windswept farm in churubusco, is downsizing their farm. We are at our limit with 8 alpacas, but they have somevery nice ones if anyone is interested. I dont thinkthey are asking a lot for them. Jack and Anita Greider. They are very nice people.
Very pretty but I'm scared of getting spit on so I keep my distance.. lol

PeacefulWalls~ Wow! Look what happened Before & After I sprayed my weeds!!!!!

Wow

finally caught up... Dads coming home soon!

He is walking around, actually pushing moms chair to the dining room. This wasn't ok but he is doing it! I take Mom over so they have dinner together every evening. We see the surgeon very soon to let him come home. Mom is missing him terribly. He walked 400 steps yesterday unassisted. The stinker sneaks past the nurse station at night. they call me
lau.gif
So he is trying so hard!
My parents are both so amazing to me. They are still like high school kids when they look at each other, its pretty amazing to see. I am thankful they have time left to be together.

goodnite all.
That is great news, sooo happy for him and your family.

Thanks everyone for silkie/bantam help. I think silkies might be okay for me, because even though they're small, they don't look like tiny chickens. They look like muppets. And no one is scared of muppets.

So now I really want to see one in person!

The last egg did not hatch. It had started growing the black bacteria spot. And while it was not completely rotten it smelled strongly of burnt hard cook eggs. I had not candled or I would have tossed it much sooner, but I also kind of wanted to test the eggs. I had read that candling was not really needed as a clear egg or even a started then stopped egg would not explode in the first 18 days. I had not tested that in my incubator but had the egg exploded under a hen she would have cleaned up the mess. Instead the black barn cat got it. The kitten and the gray cat were too busy rolling around playing in the dirt to even care.

And in great news, the barn cats killed 2 starlings or some other wild annoying black bird last night along with at least 3 mice, meaning at least one of the cats went on a killing spree but did not touch any of the 4 chicks.
Thats good the cats know the difference..

Very strange..............................

I waited the two weeks recommended just didn't want t risk anything.
I know your right.. just hate store eggs!!!!

Thanks! I finished off the corn yesterday and got a final count of 202 ears! So happy!
Our last of it was 45 ears of Candy Corn. It was big and beautiful!

Thats allot of corn, and "stupid question"... what is candy corn? not talking about the Halloween candy corn ... lol

I have a neighbor that has a little flock of banties about half mile away from me. Can't say they give me the willies but I can't figure out for the life of me how these things survive the myriad hawks around here. And his little rooster is quite ornate but the crow is so tiny! I can just imagine my big boy going over there, killing the little guy, and then calling all the girls over to have a meat snack.

Ha! I feel the same way about my neighbor's little chihuahua dogs. If my flock ever got in his yard, I'm pretty sure they'd eat the dogs.
you guys are bad... lol

That's fair. There were a few roos there that were massive.

My daughter wants silkies to keep as pets. Not indoI
I always thought they looked strange and NO WAY was I ever going to have any........... well I got 2 for a winter broody hen that I couldn't break, from Brad and I have been in-love ever since and am looking to expand my little Silkie flock, Once you start you just cant stop
wink.png

I just noticed there was one! That's great!

As far as bantams go, you have to have some to truly appreciate them. They are really neat little things, make great broodies, and eat the crap out of bugs. I have about 30 of them, and they are all sweethearts. The only chickens I can keep 4 or 5 boys together, and they get along great, and don't tear up hens.
I agree

I would but after yesterday getting the MF's DH says no more.... ( for now ) lol
They are pretty should go pretty fast I would think.

I have a seabright hen that prefers me to other chickens.

Agreed! I have yet to get on it. I have been busy. I have drove to Indy 3 days and back 2 of the days and I can't say I am tire if the drive yet lol
Man I didn't know you had naked neck chicks lol
Yup, they just hatched out under a broody yesterday. I haven't verified how many but have atleast one chick. I'm waiting for her to get off the nest and take them out to verify. She isn't the nicest broody when she has chicks lol
