INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I just don't understand. I went in the living room to watch a movie. I just came back in my room to find a dead chick and one that just died laying on my chest as I am typing this. They were perfectly healthy happy little chicks. How did they just die in the matter of maybe 2 hours? They ha been sleeping a LOT today, except for the one that is still alive, which hasn't shut up all day, as silly a it sounds I almost wonder if it knew they were dying. Now that I am all upset and have a headache I will not be able to go to sleep for a few more hours and I also have a little polish chick that doesn't understand where it's buddies went. I think I will get craigslist to find a few chicks so it isn't alone

Hey guys, need some advice/wisdom.

I have ten hens. They are 22 weeks last Saturday. One began laying Sunday before last. Everyday she would lay progressively later, and then today, nothing. Just went out in the dark to inspect the coop, run, etc. No egg. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. This obviously is my first flock.

They are fed well, organically, layer feed, supplements, frsh fruit and veg, the whole bit. They have grit and free choice oyster shells.

What, if anything, am I doing wrong or is this just normal? Please help put my mind at ease...

They just started laying. They will be very sporadic until they get a hang of things. You are doin everything right

I am 95% sure his dog is infertile now... and that these pups are my males.
I'm wondering if dna test will be required by the courts? It is a little expensive...

No contract, have texts stating agreement.

I'm willing to pay the stud fee, Wich was agreed was the profit of a puppy sold.

His dog also received superficial scratches while staying here to breed, he chewed my fence apart, literally. The scratches healed after a little under a month and the owner is accusing me of letting my other dog, a male, attack him...Wich is impossible because my male was not even near his dog and the female and his dog were never alone (she wouldn't have regardless). He never took his dog to the vet.

I'm very willing to pay the stud fee, regardless of everyrhing and even the price of "full value" of his dog, for the injuries (I went to put nu stock on the so called scars .. And the owner couldn't even find them.....because, there were none....)
But stud owner is known for a temper and just keeps screaming court.
I don't mind going, just re checking and researching on what the outcome may be/etc. Sigh lol.
It irks me when people jump to rush to court, even when the other person is 100% willing to meet half way.

He knows where I live, Wich is unsettling, and also is threatening to spread rumors to my family and my husband that he literally made up while we were discussing this whole ordeal.

[COLOR=006400]He sounds like maybe his bark is worse than his bite. But you never know so it would be a good idea to document all your interactions with him. DNA testing would prove parentage, but it sounds like you would owe a stud fee whether or not his dog sired the pups. Unless he knew his dog was infertile, in which case it sounds like he was committing fraud. If you want a DNA test to stand up in court you need the samples collected in front of a witness (and preferably by someone employed by the lab running the tests). That's expensive. But if you just want to know for yourself (or maybe small claims court? Not sure how they deal with this type of thing), then it would be cheaper. For example, www.dnaproofofparentage.com will do it for $32. But either way you'd need DNA from the stud, and it doesn't sound like the owner would be terribly cooperative. Now, if you think you know the real sire (sounds like you think it is your own dog), you could use a DNA test to show the likelihood that you are correct. I'm an expert witness in forensic genetics (although I've only worked on cases that involved human DNA, the science is the same for dogs), so if you do end up needing to do a DNA test, feel free to pm me if you have any questions. So sorry for your losses:hugs

FINALLY!!!! We're getting tomatoes every day!!! Woo-hoo!!

One of the things I'm going differently for the garden next year is start my tomato seedlings sooner. I'm also going to plant my corn plants farther apart from each other, and run a support rope next to the stalks. For the past 2 years, we've had our corn fall over under heavy winds.

What great looking tomatoes. Do they taste as good as they look??

Normal! Don't panic!

And keep an eye out for secret stashes of eggs from the others. I had to eliminate all dark corners from my coop to get mine all using the nest boxes.

Rest easy young Luke. Becoming a Jedi you are.
All is normal. Pullets are like teenage girls. Wait until they're in their 20's (2 in chicken years) and things become more predictable and less dramatic.
Until then, keep on as you have been. You're doing great!
